The Five Aggregates in Daily Life
I will go through the five aggregates — they are the essential explanation of the human condition:  Body, feeling, perception, and mental formations…in the elusive consciousness.
I’d look at these as the description of our human condition.

Practice: A Path and Safety Net or Confusing Puzzle?
The Historical Buddha’s teaching, psychology and practice methods are frequently referred to as a Path or The Path. Sometimes, they are presented as a vast inter-connected net that provides us with safety and stability. For many, however, the elements of practice sometimes feel more like a confusing puzzle or a basket of seemingly contradictory principles and recommendations.
How do the elements of practice fit together in a cohesive system of meditation and life practices that are relevant, useful, helpful?
This evening will explore some of the fundamental principles that help us to shift from uncertainty and confusion about practice, to an understanding of how the elements fit together and support each other. It will examine a model of doing this where core principles help us move from a sense of separation to one of connectedness and inter-relationship.
The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well.

Revealing the City Within: A Journey to Insight and Freedom
In this talk, we’ll explore the metaphor of the ancient city as described in the City Sutta, reflecting on how our journey toward liberation unfolds step by step. By integrating teachings from the Dhammapada and the principles of Ehipassiko and Opaniyiko, we’ll examine how the path invites us to look within, dismantle delusion, and cultivate insight, ultimately revealing the freedom already present within us.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS – BIG DAY OF GIVING
From midnight to 11:59 p.m. on May 2! https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/

SIM is participating in the Big Day of Giving on May 2. If you plan on giving this day, consider donating to SIM. We have a generous donor who has pledged to match all donations up to $1000. This giving campaign is a continuation of SIM’s efforts to make the Legacy Teacher Project sustainable and to carry SIM’s mission well into the future. We hope you will think of SIM on the Big Day of Giving!

What is Big Day of Giving?
Big Day of Giving is a once-annual 24-hour giving challenge to help local nonprofits raise funds to make a difference in the Sacramento region. It’s the culmination of an entire year’s worth of community-building and collaboration led by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, with support from community partners like Western Health Advantage, and made possible by people like you!

How can I help?
GIVE: You can donate to SIM by visiting www.bigdayofgiving.org on Thursday, May 2, and making a gift with a credit or debit card.

  • Donations as little as $10 make a big difference.
  • Your gifts can help us win some of the prizes that are up for grabs!
  • Help us reach our $1000 match from an anonymous donor; every donation will be doubled until the match has been completely met!
  • You can start giving from April 18 through May 2 during the Early Giving period.

Resolve or Determination is considered a pivotal skill in Buddhism. It is essential to implementing and sustaining our intention. It helps us mobilize and stabilize focus, attention, and effort. That’s what makes it a Parami, a special quality of mind essential to deepening and maturing our meditation practice, as well as living a full and satisfying life.
This evening will be devoted to exploring the nature of Resolve, how to develop it and specific ways to use it in meditation and daily life.
The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice.

Daylong In-person Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren

For biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren, click here.

Retreat Theme

Working with Memory, Remembering, Repetitive Thinking and Suffering
Almost all of us have had this experience: After an encounter with someone, we reflect on the situation and think they are upset with or mad at us. Repetitive thought sets in re-enforcing and strengthening our concern. We become anxious and this affects our behavior. We feel uncomfortable when we see the person, or maybe avoid them.
And then…we talk with the person and find out they were never upset or mad in the first place. This is a wonderful illustration of the Historical Buddha’s teaching that we make not just the world, but our suffering and happiness, with our thoughts.
This one-day workshop will explore the pivotal and major role that memory, remembering and related repetitive thinking play in our identity and suffering. We will investigate and learn how to work skillfully with these qualities of mind from the perspectives of Buddhist psychology and modern memory research. It will involve meditations, reflections, dharma talks, and small and large group discussions.
The day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat.
