The Essential Role of Context or Framing in Buddhist Practice

Context – the set of ideas, beliefs and principles which guide our understanding of ourselves, others, our relationships and how the world works – shapes our experience, our assessment of our experience and the choices we make. Context, in very real and tangible ways, determines how we relate to our experience.
In most cases, we don’t give context a second thought. It is the unseen foundation or groundwork of experience that lies just below our normal perception of events.
Buddhist practice involves a conscious and determined re-framing of the context we use to experience and relate to events. The elements of this re-framing – the ideas and principles – are significantly different than the psychological and emotional viewpoints that dominate conventional thinking. Some elements are radically different. In Buddhist practice we refer to this re—framing process as the “Cultivation of Right View.”
During this evening we’ll look at several areas of difference in fundamental context or View between conventional and Buddhist viewpoints; and how those differences translate into significant differences in how we relate to and understand experience – particularly suffering and satisfaction.

RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. The pilgrimage and the PDL program led to an interest in establishing the SIM Kalyana Mitta (Pali for spiritual friends) groups. He coordinated SIM’s network of Kalyana Mitta groups until he joined the SIM Board in 2010. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. He is a past president of the SIM Board. His teachers are Dennis Warren and Steve Armstrong.

What’s Working?

Sit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Member Laura Rosenthal

Buddhist practice emphasizes attention to the way our mental, verbal and physical actions lead us into and out of dukkha – sometimes translated as suffering or a sense of unsatisfactoriness. This experiential inquiry into “suffering and the end of suffering” supports us in cultivating wholesome qualities of mind and heart that help us wake up. But often, in undertaking this inquiry, we emphasize those actions that lead to suffering. We may overlook the things we are already doing or experiencing that lead away from suffering and toward peace and ease.

Join long-term practitioner and SIM participant Laura Rosenthal in a dharma talk and group conversation about “What’s Working.” We will focus on the way aspects of our lives and actions already support our waking up – and on what we can learn from looking at this. To encourage fluid group participation, this talk will not be recorded.

A Lump of Foam: The Five Aggregates
Sit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard

The five Aggregates of Clinging are an excellent means for seeing the three universal characteristics: impermanence, conditionality/insubstantiality and suffering/stress. This phrase is repeated like a mantra in the many suttas about the aggregates: “This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.” We will discuss how to use the aggregates in our daily lives to foster insight into how we suffer.
