The SIM residential retreat has filled fast and is currently full but we encourage you to sign up for the wait list as there’s a good chance you may still be able to attend since people’s plans change and there will likely be some cancellations. Proceed with the registration process to add your name to the wait list. As soon as a spot is open, we’ll notify you and if you don’t get into the retreat, we’ll refund your deposit.

Registration Payment by Mail

At the bottom of this page, in the RSVP section, for “Reg payment via postal service“, enter the number one and select the button “Confirm RSVP“. Each RSVP should have a unique name so if you’re paying fees for a partner/friend/spouse, RSVP separately for each name (the email address can be the same).
After you RSVP you’ll receive a “Ticket” via email however there’s no need to print it. As soon as possible, please pay the registration fee ($100 per registrant or less if you are using a partial scholarship). If the mailed envelope is not postmarked within one week after you RSVP, you may lose your place in the registration queue. Send a check or money order payable to “SIM”. Write “Reg-Retreat 2021” on the check memo line. Mail the payment to Sacramento Insight Meditation, C/O Sacramento Dharma Center Building, 3111 Wissemann Drive, Sacramento, California, 95826.

The retreat registrar will contact you as soon as we receive your payment (we’ll know your email address from the RSVP you confirm with us).

Thoughts… what a random mess! They come uninvited, stick around for a bit and then they are off. Thoughts that we enjoy as well as thoughts that we would prefer to ignore. Thoughts that are inspirational and others which bring out our worst nature. The Buddha explains in the “Dvedhavitakka Sutta” that he too wrestled with uninvited thoughts. Using mindfulness practice, he categorized arising thoughts into skillful and unskillful, i.e. which of his thoughts alleviated suffering and which made things worse. In our contemporary lives, we are unfortunately, mostly unaware of the harm we needlessly cause ourselves because we rarely monitor our own thought processes. This is true for the dramatic “big issues”, but it is also relevant for thoughts that arise from seemingly innocent and often mundane daily activities. Tonight we will discuss strategies for elevating our “thought experience” both on and off the cushion.

Happiness (sukha in Pali) is the proximate cause for samādhi (collectedness, concentration). It is also traditionally taught as one of the factors of absorption (jhana). On this evening, Meg will explore the various meanings of happiness in a Buddhist context and the role it plays in our practice of meditative awareness.

Currently there are two open spots in this upcoming retreat.
