August 28, 2022 September 4, 2022 PDT

Join us for SIM’s Residential Retreat at the beautiful Mercy Center in Auburn, CA from Sunday, August 28, 5:00 PM through Sunday, September 4, 2022, 11:00 AM. Please read through the information below and then purchase your ticket to register. We will update this registration page as further details are announced.

Retreat Theme: Awareness, Wisdom & Love

Awareness is a natural capacity of the mind that is available to all of us in any moment no matter what is happening in our experience. When the mind is relaxed and at ease, this natural awareness can be recognized and integrated into our lives. When we combine a receptive, kindhearted attitude with relaxed yet diligent effort, we create the conditions for insight, wisdom, and compassion to arise naturally.
Through this process, we see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering, both in our own life and in the world around us. As our understanding deepens, we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance, integrity, confidence, and connection.
This silent retreat will include instruction in both Insight and Loving-kindness meditation, meetings with the teachers, and an optional daily period of mindful movement. It is suitable for both beginning and experienced students of meditation.
We encourage you to consider the following questions before registering:

  • Do you have a regular practice?
  • Do you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?
  • Have you sat at a residential retreat before?

If you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you, please contact us, click here.

Our retreat teachers this year will be Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel.

GREG SCHARF, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching.

NEESHA PATEL, PhD is deeply grateful for the liberative teachings of the Buddha. She has been fortunate to have practiced in both Asia and the US. Her practice has been influenced by the guidance of many wonderful teachers including Sayadaw U Tejaniya and Thai Forest Tradition teachers. She teaches mindfulness meditation at UC Davis and is a participant in the 2017-2021 Insight Meditation Society Teacher Training Program.

RABBI SETH CASTLEMAN is a teacher, writer, and storyteller with over twenty years experience teaching mindfulness and spiritual practice. Castleman is trained in both the Jewish and Buddhist traditions. After 20 years of meditation practice and two years of silent retreat as a lay-person in the US, India, and Nepal and as a monk in Burma, Seth was trained as a teacher by Jack Kornfield at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. He was authorized as a meditation/dharma teacher in 2008. Following eight years of rabbinical studies in the US and Israel/Palestine, Castleman was ordained in 2011 as a rabbi by one Orthodox, one Conservative, and one Reform rabbi. Castleman has published in two dozen newspapers, periodicals, and anthologies on the intersection of contemplative practice and social justice and the transformational power of brokenness. As a storyteller, Seth has performed in theaters, on radio and television, and at countless kitchen tables. Seth uses myth, storytelling, and humor as central tools in his teaching and counseling work. Seth Castleman is married to Reverend Elizabeth Griswold, making them, quite possibly, the only rabbi—Christian minister married couple in the US. Seth and Elizabeth live in Davis, CA with their three children.

Retreat Theme: Recognizing Natural Awareness

Meditation can be seen as the process of learning to recognize and trust a natural quality of awareness that is available to all of us in any moment no matter what is happening in our experience. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment.

As we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control, manipulate, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is.

We start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance, integrity, confidence, and connection.

The teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong.

Developing a Mind/Heart of Peace The Paramis are qualities of heart that when developed bring the highest blessing, which is peace. In honor of the passing of Thich Nhat Hanh, Rich will use illustrations from the beloved Zen Master’s life for development of the Paramis in daily life. We will see how Thay embodied patience, renunciation, determination, truthfulness, and other qualities of the heart to bring peace at the individual, community, and global scales. Please bring a story of how you have been influenced by Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching, in person, online, or through his writing: a short quote, a song, a poem, or one of his books. We have invited special guest Helen Hobart to share her experience practicing with Thay.

Rich donated all the dana he received from the presentation to the Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation.

SIM is grateful for all our donors and we’ve already emailed tax letters to those who’ve donated $250 or more in 2021. If you have not received the tax letter (dated Jan 25, 2022) and you think you should have, please check your email Inbox, as well as your Spam or Junk folders. If you still don’t find it, please contact SaraD@sactoinsight.org.

Buddhist practice has a unique approach to problem solving and healing. The teachings, methods and underlying psychology dismantle the confusing, and sometimes overwhelming, emotional energy of difficult reactive patterns and our attachment to a biographical narrative that identifies us as damaged. This approach focuses on how we relate to the narrative, not the biographical details of the narrative.

This evening will explore two practical questions:

  • What is the Buddhist approach to problem solving and healing?
  • What role does our individual biographical narratives play in this process?

The subject matter of this evening is appropriate for all stages of practice.
