THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2015, 7:00-9:15 PM. Sitting and Dharma Talk. HOPE AND THE LOSS OF HOPE. SIM Founding Teacher DENNIS WARREN.

What is hope? Why is the loss of hope frequently so disappointing, painful and disorienting? What is the difference between hope and faith? What role does hope play, if any, in practice? These questions are important to understanding practice and to being a satisfied and happy human being on this planet. Hope can be a valuable tool in practice and life, and it can also be a state of mind that sets us up for lots of suffering.

This evening with SIM’s Founding Teacher, Dennis Warren, will look closely at the nature of hope from a practical, real life perspective. Please join us at 7:00 pm at the Sacramento Friends Meetinghouse, 890 57th Street.

“Grief,” with Community Mentor Rich Howard

Psychotherapist Francis Weller says, “One of the most important things we can do right now in this culture is to grieve, because it is a protest against this collective agreement to turn our backs on what is happening.” The practice of meditation has been described as “one long grieving process.” We see things as they have come to be, without turning our backs, and we let go. In this way, we develop a greater capacity to be with the sometimes harsh realities of life on earth, as well as preparing for our inevitable death. In this latest exploration in SIM’s series of presentations on Difficult Emotions, Community Mentor Rich Howard will look at grief through the lens of buddhist psychology and mindfulness meditation. All are welcome.

The Sacramento Green Sangha meets from 7-9pm on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the Friends Meeting House on 57th Street. It is not lineage based and welcomes people from all Sacramento area sanghas and interested others. The gathering begins with meditation. Various sangha members may offer considerations on how to cause less harm in our personal and global environments. We also discuss how to influence our larger society regarding the importance of mindful living with care and respect for the earth and all her inhabitants.
