This is an introductory to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM starting August 21, 2019. Designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979, MBSR is an integrative and scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness practices with group processing and psycho-education around stress. MBSR helps participants mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness, as well as conditions such as anxiety, depression, headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life. This work was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special, “Healing and the Mind” in a dated but still compelling piece.

Instructor: Matt Russell, PhD, is a UMass Med School Center for Mindfulness qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and has been a member of the SIM community since 2010. Matt is a graduate of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies’ Chaplaincy Training Program in Redwood City. He has completed trainings with Mindful
Schools and taught mindfulness to teenagers.

MBSR is the most widely researched and utilized mindfulness program in the world. This intensive eight-week training was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979. MBSR combines mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body-awareness practices with group processing and psychoeducation about stress physiology. Students learn how to mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness, as well as conditions such as anxiety, depression, headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life.

The Sacramento Dharma Center Altar Committee (AC) is displaying a design concept for the permanent altar in the South Lobby. The committee wants your comments and participation!

The Altar Committee was formed in the fall of 2016 and includes representatives of the three sustaining sanghas. Its purpose is to gift the Dharma Center with a permanent altar and teacher side table. This gift symbolizes our three sanghas joining together to establish a permanent and historical home for our sanghas.

Please leave your written comments at the display site. You will also find AC representatives at their July 21st meeting (5pm) at the SDC. However, if you cannot attend in person to share your input, you can add your comments to this news post in the “Leave a Reply” section below.

We read often of the power of forgiveness and are inspired by those who, even after suffering the devastating loss of loved ones and community members, still forgive. Is this always the right response? In the Buddha’s teachings, patisaraniya-kamma or reconciliation — means a return to amicability, and that requires much more than forgiveness. What are the criteria for reconciliation that the Buddha set out and what do we do if we feel reconciliation is impossible?
There are right and wrong ways of attempting reconciliation: those that skillfully meet the necessary requirements for reestablishing trust, and those that don’t. To encourage right reconciliation among his followers, the Buddha formulated detailed methods for achieving it, along with a culture of values that encourages putting those methods to use.
We will discuss forgiveness, reconciliation and what needs to take place for these conditions to occur… or not.

This talk concludes Rich’s series on the three root defilements (greed, hatred, and delusion) and their antidotes. Wisdom is the way out of Delusion, which we discussed on June 6. While we may picture wisdom as only available far away, it is right here inthis moment, waiting to be discovered. We will explore the different kinds of wisdom in the Buddhist tradition and the ways by which wisdom grows and benefits our practice and all beings.

Guest teacher Noliwe Alexander let us know she is ill and will not be able to join us this Thursday, June 20, 2019. We will re-schedule her for the Fall or Winter, and SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard will substitute for her this week. The topic of Rich’s talk is “Wisdom” and details are posted on the calendar.
