Enter the amount you’d like to give and 100% of your donation will be shared with Walt Opie.\nTopic details:  There is a discourse that describes the Buddha going on his alms round one day and not receiving any food to eat. Instead of getting down at the lack of food though\, he declared that he took delight in being self-sufficient\, and he said he would “keep feeding on joy.” The type of joy he meant relates to deep states of meditation. However\, we can also feed on the “subtle joy of being in the present moment” when we are practicing diligent mindfulness. And further\, we can take delight in wholesome forms of joy and happiness like cultivating more gratitude and generosity\, especially during the holiday season.\n\nWALT OPIE was first introduced to insight meditation in 1993 at Spirit Rock and began attending regular residential retreats in 2005. He is a graduate of both the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders’ (CDL4) training program and the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy program. He has led sitting groups for people in recovery since 2011. Walt also serves as a volunteer chaplain with Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) at Solano state prison in Vacaville\, CA. In addition\, he is currently a trainee in the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) Teacher Training program based in Barre\, MA. Visit https://www.waltopie.com/ for more information.\n\n\n\nWalt is also offering an online mini retreat through IMS (Insight Meditation Society) focusing on “Freedom from Craving”. The retreat is scheduled for Sunday\, December 5\, 2021 and details are posted to https://www.dharma.org/freedom-from-craving/. Details include IMS interviewing Walt with questions such as\,\n\n How does craving lead to suffering?\n How can we develop the internal empowerment needed to change our relationship to old habits?

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Beginner’s Mind
DESCRIPTION:Establishing the Wonderful Quality of “Beginner’s Mind”\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. The teacher will present via Zoom.\nJoin online meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82802511823\nPasscode: 627511\nJoin by phone: 1-669-900-6833 ( Meeting ID: 828 0251 1823 )\nFor tips and instructions on how to participate\, check this news blog.\nThursday Night Talk Dana\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nFor remote meetings\, please use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and 75% of your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren.\nTopic details:\n“Beginner’s Mind” is a wonderful quality of mind. It has the potential to significantly improve our practice of meditation and the quality of our mindfulness and experience in daily life. Despite the wide spread (and often confusing) coverage it receives in Buddhist\, business\, athletic\, therapeutic and pop culture publications\, it is something that remains elusive for many of us.\nThis evening will explore the following practical questions:\n\n What is Beginner’s Mind\, really?\n Why is it considered so valuable?\n Why does it seem elusive?\n How do we establish it in meditation practice? And in daily life?\n\nThe subject matter of this evening is appropriate for all stages of practice.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Living With\, and Without\, A Separate Self

If you attend onsite\, you do have the option to pay the registration fee in-person on the day of the retreat or pay online after the retreat starts.\n If you buy a ticket for onsite attendance you may still attend the retreat via Zoom.\n The link to attend the retreat via Zoom appears in three places:\n\n The Zoom link is at the bottom of this page – select the button “Join Retreat Online” to connect to the meeting.\n The Zoom link is included in the automated email sent with your ticket purchase (email subject is “You have tickets!“).\n The Zoom link is https://joinconferencing.zoom.us/join\, with Meeting ID: 837 5090 8344 and Passcode: 135371\n\n\n To give a donation after attending this retreat\, click here.\n\nRetreat Theme: The Possibilities & Deep Satisfaction of Living With\, and Without\, A Separate Self\nFrom a Buddhist perspective\, “Self” can be misunderstood as dualistic and problematic: “Self” equals bad & suffering. “No self” equals good and becomes a cure for all our ills.\nThis over-simplified model is guaranteed to result in confusion\, struggle and misery. “Self” and “ego” become sources of suffering rather than playing useful\, helpful\, valuable roles in life.\nBuddhist practice provides a larger\, inclusive\, unified view of identity and self that that fills life with endless possibilities\, satisfaction and reassurance. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective.\nWe’ll examine the teachings\, psychology and practices that support essential elements of practice that may seem confusing\, contradictory and distant – self\, no-self\, identity\, traumatic identity\, impermanence\, emptiness\, “non-dual” awareness\, transcendence\, karma\, awakening. We’ll explore how these foundational elements relate to\, and fit together into one seamless whole.\nYou’ll have the option of attending the day in person (absent a negative development with COVID) or online by Zoom. Dennis is encouraging as many people as possible to attend in person\, if you feel safe. Look forward to helpful day of practice together.\n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher\, Professional Level (CMT-P)\, by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/ .\nDennis has been participating in residential meditation retreats\, and has maintained a daily meditation practice\, in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. 2018 was his 20th year of teaching Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential\, retreat\, educational\, medical\, corporate and community settings. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021.\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. In terms of practice\, we can think of these activities as Wise Reflection and Wise Intention. For this evening\, we will be using a beginning – the first section of the Dhammapada\, which Jack Kornfield calls “the most beloved of all Buddhist texts\, both poetic and profound.” Titled “Dichotomies” in Gil Fronsdal’s translation (Shambhala\, 2008)\, this text contains reminders of the power of our thoughts and actions\, and discernment in choosing a path of happiness and away from quarrels. \nThe placement of a text at the beginning of a collection was not arbitrary when the Pali Canon was assembled – important texts like this one were intentionally placed first. We will take a slow tour through this poem and see what it offers for our year-end reflection and intention. Feel free to have your own copy of the Dhammapada at hand; it is often fruitful to see how different translators approach a text.
