SUMMARY:2019 SIM Residential Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM)\n14th Annual Residential Retreat\nResidential retreat is widely viewed in the Theravada tradition as an important\, if not essential\, component in the path towards awakening. Residential meditation practice provides an environment that helps us turn inward towards a way of being where we live and act from a place of stillness\, satisfaction\, and kindness. This retreat is designed to deepen practice skills and foster insights into the stages of awakening and their implications for daily life. \nIt is rare for a community sangha to sponsor a regular residential retreat. When we practice together in a residential setting\, the power of our individual efforts joins together into a powerful force of deepen your own practice and to deepen our connections as a community. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nWhile this retreat is appropriate for both more and less experienced meditators\, we encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\nDo  you have a regular practice?\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\nHave you sat at a residential retreat before?\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact SIM’s event manager at reg-ret-reg@sactoinsight.org. \nOur retreat teachers this year will be Kamala Masters and Vance Pryor. \nKamala Masters began practicing meditation in the mid-seventies attending retreats in the Theravada tradition. In 1977 she met Anagarika Munindra\, her first teacher\, who taught her the value of being mindful in everyday life. In 1985\, she began to practice vipassana and metta meditations intensively with Sayadaw U Pandita with whom she temporarily ordained as a Buddhist nun in 2001 and 2003.\nIn 2005\, she began practicing cittanupassana\, contemplation of mind\, with Sayadaw U Tejaniya. She integrates this teaching with what she has learned from her other respected teachers.\nSince the early nineties\, Kamala has been teaching in the United States and abroad\, and is a Guiding Teacher and member of the Board of Directors at the Insight Meditation Society. In 1995 she co-founded Vipassana Metta Foundation with Steve Armstrong\, developing the Maui Dhamma Sanctuary for self-reliant students to practice. She served as an editor on the Vipassana Metta Foundation Translation Committee for Mahasi Sayadaw’s Manual of Insight\, published by Wisdom Publications in 2016.\nKamala strives for extended periods of self-retreat each year. She is grateful for the opportunity to serve and to grow in the Dhamma. \nVance Pryor\, PsyD\, began insight meditation in 1998. He has been deeply influenced by the teachings of Sayadaw U Pandita and Sayadaw U Tejaniya. His training to become a teacher has been supported by the mentorship of Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters. He is currently participating in Insight Meditation Society’s 2017-2021 Teacher Training Program. \n\nResidential Retreat Flyer (in PDF)\n\nCost\nWe’ve worked very hard to keep cost down\, so registration fees are the same as last year. You can select from two different registration fee levels: Regular: $700.00\, Donor Level: $775.00\nBoth levels cover the costs of accommodations\, meals and administration. Donor level registration reduces overall retreat costs and supports scholarship assistance for participants facing special financial demands. Payment in full is due by June 30.\nAt the event you’ll also have the opportunity to make donations to help support the retreat teachers and cooks. For donations on location we accept cash or checks. To donate online by credit card or your PayPal account\, click here. \nRegistration\nNote: This retreat is full however there’s a good chance you may still be able to attend since people’s plans change and there will likely be some cancellations. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Essential Role of Context
DESCRIPTION:The Essential Role of Context or Framing in Buddhist Practice\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nContext – the set of ideas\, beliefs and principles which guide our understanding of ourselves\, others\, our relationships and how the world works – shapes our experience\, our assessment of our experience and the choices we make. Context\, in very real and tangible ways\, determines how we relate to our experience.\nIn most cases\, we don’t give context a second thought. It is the unseen foundation or groundwork of experience that lies just below our normal perception of events.\nBuddhist practice involves a conscious and determined re-framing of the context we use to experience and relate to events. The elements of this re-framing – the ideas and principles – are significantly different than the psychological and emotional viewpoints that dominate conventional thinking. Some elements are radically different. In Buddhist practice we refer to this re—framing process as the “Cultivation of Right View.”\nDuring this evening we’ll look at several areas of difference in fundamental context or View between conventional and Buddhist viewpoints; and how those differences translate into significant differences in how we relate to and understand experience – particularly suffering and satisfaction.\nPlease try to attend this evening if you plan on attending the one-day retreat Dennis will be leading on Saturday\, September 28th. This evening will lay a helpful foundation for your experience of the one-day retreat. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of “Framing Experience” In Performance\, Satisfaction and Happiness\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nEvery day we are presented with circumstances that can be opportunities\, challenges or problems depending on how our mind frames the experience that is taking place. The way our mind frames an experience has enormous influence in determining how we feel about our capacity to deal with a set of facts skillfully and how we perform.\nThis event – how the mind frames what is it about to engage – is critical in guiding how\, and whether\, we can mobilize our inner resources to take on what life brings to us with determination\, patience and satisfaction; or whether we struggle\, suffer and are disappointed. This is the difference between feeling empowered and capable vs vulnerable and at risk.\nThis principle applies whether the circumstances\, or life situation\, involves our interior life\, our relationship with others\, or economic\, cultural or political events taking place in our community\, our country or the work.\nThis one day will look at ways we can use the framing process as a practical\, hand-on tool. We will examine the what\, why and how of framing events from a practice perspective using real life illustrations. We will explore how we can use our practice to improve the fundamental way we relate to our experience\, improve our performance and feel better about ourselves? This will include Dennis sharing some of his recent experiences in dealing with medical challenges\, pain and other significant life situations.\nPlease try to attend Dennis’ talk on Thursday\, September 26 if you plan on attending this one-day retreat. That talk will lay a helpful foundation for your experience of the one-day retreat. \nAll are welcome. Come for all day or for a portion of the day. Please bring your lunch. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998.
