SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Greed and Mindfulness of Death
DESCRIPTION:Greed and Mindfulness of Death\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard \nN O T E  – Due to technical difficulties\, we couldn’t include this talk in our Audio Dharma library. \nRich recently started a short series on working with the three roots of suffering – greed\, hatred\, and delusion. We looked at one version of hatred\, anger\, in February and one of its antidotes\, patience\, in March. On this evening\, we will look at greed (desire\, lobha\, sensual attachment) and one of its antidotes – mindfulness of death (maranasati). \nThe Buddha said\, “Mindfulness of death—when developed and pursued—is of great fruit and great benefit.” (AN 6:20)\nWhat are some of the benefits of looking at a subject that our culture often goes out of its way to avoid? What are some contemporary practices that we may use to work with desire beyond the practices recommended for monastics in India in 500 BCE? As with the previous two sessions in this series\, there will be handout of resources. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rich Howard and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:MBSR Class Introductory Session
DESCRIPTION:MBSR Introduction Session\nThis is an Introductory Session of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. \n\nMBSR Flyer with more information\n\nAt the bottom of this page\, you may enter the number of people planning to attend this session and select the button “Confirm RSVP“.\nThis is an introductory to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM starting April 24\, 2019. This work was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special\, “Healing and the Mind” in a dated but still compelling piece. \n Instructor: Matt Russell\, PhD\, is a UMass Med School Center for Mindfulness qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and has been a member of the SIM community since 2010. Matt is a graduate of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies’ Chaplaincy Training Program in Redwood City. He has completed trainings with Mindful\nSchools and taught mindfulness to teenagers. \n

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Meg Gawler - Happiness and the Arising of Samādhi
DESCRIPTION:Happiness and the Arising of Samādhi\nSit & Dharma Talk with Visiting teacher Meg Gawler \nHappiness (sukha in Pali) is the proximate cause for samādhi (collectedness\, concentration). It is also traditionally taught as one of the factors of absorption (jhana). On this evening\, Meg will explore the various meanings of happiness in a Buddhist context and the role it plays in our practice of meditative awareness. \nMEG GAWLER began practicing Buddhism in 1968 as a disciple of the Zen Master\, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi\, including over three years of monastic training. She earned a Master’s in Applied Ecology\, moved to Europe\, pursued an international career in nature conservation and human development\, and began practicing in the Theravāda tradition. She has trained with Gil Fronsdal\, Jack Kornfield\, Joseph Goldstein\, and others. Authorized as a Dharma teacher by Jack Kornfield and then by Gil Fronsdal\, Meg teaches retreats in both English and French in Switzerland\, and serves as a guest teacher at the Insight Meditation Center and elsewhere. Meg also holds a Master’s in Buddhist Studies\, specializing in early Theravāda studies. In addition\, she teaches Radiant Heart Qigong in the tradition of Teja Bell. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Two Types of Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Two Types of Thinking\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThoughts… what a random mess! They come uninvited\, stick around for a bit and then they are off. Thoughts that we enjoy as well as thoughts that we would prefer to ignore. Thoughts that are inspirational and others which bring out our worst nature. The Buddha explains in the “Dvedhavitakka Sutta” that he too wrestled with uninvited thoughts. Using mindfulness practice\, he categorized arising thoughts into skillful and unskillful\, i.e. which of his thoughts alleviated suffering and which made things worse. In our contemporary lives\, we are unfortunately\, mostly unaware of the harm we needlessly cause ourselves because we rarely monitor our own thought processes. This is true for the dramatic “big issues”\, but it is also relevant for thoughts that arise from seemingly innocent and often mundane daily activities. Tonight we will discuss strategies for elevating our “thought experience” both on and off the cushion. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - The Five Daily Recollections
DESCRIPTION:The Five Daily Recollections\nA One Day Retreat– with SIM’s Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThe Buddha advised his followers to reflect on five topics daily: aging\, sickness\, death\, separation form those we love\, and our own karma. The surprising result from this practice is paradoxical… spending more time with these concepts\, rather than continually creating diversions to avoid “thinking about something unpleasant”\, causes us to live with more ease and equanimity. Neurologically\, with avoidance we pay the price. Resistance causes greater and greater anxiety and tension… often culminating in painful physical and mental manifestations. We will investigate any resistance we might have to one — or all of these five recollections — and how to use these reflections as a benefit for our daily mindfulness and meditation practice. \nIf the weather is nice\, we may spend some time outside. Bring a blanket to sit on\, or a folding chair. Please bring your lunch. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
