SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Loving Anger
DESCRIPTION:Loving Anger\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nN O T E  – Due to technical difficulties\, we couldn’t include this talk in our Audio Dharma library however we do have this handout that Rich provided the attendees – Loving Anger Resources (.pdf) \nWe may have idealized views of the spiritual path. We may not want to look at the shadow side of our personality. Yet “seeing things as they are” is the very meaning of “vipassana” or insight. It is only by allowing our anger\, fear\, and other challenging emotions to come into view and be known that we can move through them to a place of peace. At the same time\, we must be wary of “spiritual bypassing\,” a premature “transcendence” of uncomfortable emotions. As Rumi says in his poem The Guest House\, “meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.” We will spend this evening learning to work with\, and maybe even love\, uncomfortable emotions\, using anger as a case study.\nThis emotion is so important to understand that Thich Nhat Hanh has an entire book on it (“Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames”) and Bhikkhu Bodhi devotes Chapter III of “The Buddha’s Teachings on Social and Communal Harmony” to anger (pages 47-68). Bring an open heart! \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rich Howard and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:Climate Sangha
DESCRIPTION:Meeting the 3rd Wednesday of each month\, the Sacramento Climate Sangha provides dharmic support and a refuge for exploration of our hopes and fears about climate change. \n\nClimate Sangha participants\, \nHere is a message from our presenter\, Oscar Belaguer. We look forward to seeing you for tonight’s discussion. \nFor discussion at the Climate Sangha’s Feb 20 discussion of “engaged Buddhism”\, I propose we reflect on the following three questions and the below first four of the Order of Interbeing’s Precepts of Engaged Buddhism; and read this short article\, “A Stand Against Suffering”: \nQuestions \n\nDo you ever suffer – physically\, emotionally\, or spiritually – from experiencing or thinking about the effects of climate change on you and others? If so\, how do you respond?\nDo the terms engaged Buddhism and activism evoke positive\, negative\, or neutral sensations/ feeling tones for you?\nIs engaged Buddhism part of your practice? If so\, does it include activism?\n\n  \nThich Nhat Hanh\, Fourteen Precepts of Engaged Buddhism (first four) \n\nDo not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine\, theory\, or ideology\, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth.\nDo not think the knowledge you presently possess is changeless\, absolute truth. Avoid being narrow-minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice nonattachment from views in order to be open to receive others’ viewpoints. Truth is found in life and not merely in conceptual knowledge. Be ready to learn throughout your entire life and to observe reality in yourself and in the world at all times.\nDo not force others\, including children\, by any means whatsoever\, to adopt your views\, whether by authority\, threat\, money\, propaganda\, or even education. However\, through compassionate dialogue\, help others renounce fanaticism and narrowness.\nDo not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering\, including personal contact\, visits\, images\, and sounds. By such means\, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world.\n\nFrom “Interbeing: Fourteen Guidelines for Engaged Buddhism\,” Revised edition: Oct. 1993 by Thich Nhat Hanh\, published by Parallax Press\, Berkeley\, California. \nThank you very much\,\nOscar Belaguer

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Not clinging to self-identity
DESCRIPTION:Not clinging to self-identity\nA One Day Retreat– with SIM’s Community Teacher Diane Wilde\nNot clinging to Self-identity is the first “marker” on the path to liberation — and could be divided into both exterior and interior ‘processes’. Our exterior self-identity fixates on how we need to be seen by acquaintances and strangers with our predefined narrative. We want our “specialness” to be recognized. Our interior self-identity is a confusing contrivance which is constantly changing\, re-evaluating and re-constructing itself. In fact\, our mutating interior self-identity causes even more suffering than the outward modality in which we face the world. In contemporary terms\, working with self-identity might be defined as\, learning how to not take ourselves so seriously. At our daylong we will learn from traditional Buddhist teachings\, as well as contemporary teachers\, how to start releasing this bag of tricks that ultimately makes no sense at all. We may even begin to see the truth that clinging to self-identity is ultimately the source of our suffering… and begin to let go. \nOur day will be mostly in silence except for periods of discussion/Dhamma talk. \nPlease bring a lunch and if possible\, your own plates\, cups and utensils. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Entering the Stream\, Dealing with Doubt
DESCRIPTION:The Second in a series on “Entering the Stream” of Awakening. To listen to Diane first talk on this subject\, click here. \nEntering the Stream to Awakening\, Dealing with Doubt\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde \nYogis who are sincere in their practice\, and desire to alleviate suffering are said to be on the precipice of “Entering the Stream”. A Stream-Enterer\, known as a Sotapanna in Pali\, the ancient language of the Buddha\, is a practitioner who is well on the path to “awakening”\, which means cutting through and eliminating the fetters that cause suffering. The first fetter is understanding the delusion of self-identity\, the belief that each of us is a separate entity unto ourselves. The second fetter to be uprooted is doubt. Tonight we will briefly discuss self-identity\, which will be the topic of the Feb. 23rd daylong and examine in more detail\, the second “fetter” of doubt. Doubt is traditionally seen as having two aspects: skillful doubt\, which prods us into deeper experiential investigation of the path\, and unskillful doubt\, which is a dead-end\, leading to confusion and unhappiness. We will discuss the characteristics of both types of doubt and how skillful doubt is an aid in navigating the difficulties we often encounter in our own practice. Unskillful doubt is abandoned as we Enter the Stream.
