SUMMARY:Introduction to MBSR with SIM Community Member Matt Russell
DESCRIPTION:This evening will provide an introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM starting September 2018. Designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979\, MBSR is an integrative and scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness practices with group processing and psycho-education around stress. MBSR helps participants mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness\, as well as conditions such as anxiety\, depression\, headaches\, high blood pressure\, sleep disturbances\, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life. This work was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special\, “Healing and the Mind” in a dated but still compelling piece. \n Matt Russell is a UMass Med School Center for Mindfulness qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and has been a member of the SIM community since 2010. He has sat over a dozen multi-day silent retreats with teachers such as Joseph Goldstein\, Steve Armstrong\, Kamala Masters\, John Travis\, Bhikkhu Anālayo\, Dennis Warren\, and others. Matt is a graduate of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies’ Chaplaincy Training Program in Redwood City. He has completed trainings with Mindful Schools and taught mindfulness to teenagers. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nAt the bottom of this page\, you may enter the number of people planning to attend and select the button “Confirm RSVP”.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Present Moment
DESCRIPTION:What’s so great about the present moment anyway?\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Rev. Diane Wilde \n“Be mindful.” “Stay in the present.” “Bare attention.” We’ve all heard one of these phrases. And if you’re more experienced in insight practice\, these may be the watchwords that chime in the back of consciousness from morning till night\, reminding you that everything genuine in the spiritual path is to be found in the now. So\, if this is such an important practice\, why is it so hard to stay present and what’s so great about it anyhow? We’ll discuss the reasons for staying present according to Buddhist teachings\, and offer some practical techniques for staying present that you will find helpful. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Meditation with SIM Community Mentor\, Rich Howard
DESCRIPTION:This 45-minute course is suitable for beginners or anyone who would like a refresher. It is offered on the fourth Thursday of every month before the regular sitting and dharma talk. There is no fee. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. The pilgrimage and the PDL program led to an interest in establishing the SIM Kalyana Mitta (Pali for spiritual friends) groups. He coordinated SIM’s network of Kalyana Mitta groups until he joined the SIM Board in 2010. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. He is a past president of the SIM Board. His teachers are Dennis Warren and Steve Armstrong. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Abiding Independent
DESCRIPTION:Abiding Independent\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Rich Howard \nThe Satipattahana Sutta (the Discourse on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness) is at the center of our practice of meditation in the Vipassana (Insight) tradition. The refrain of the Sutta includes this phrase: the practictioner “abides independent\, not clinging to anything in the world.” Other suttas use “knowledge independent of others” as a sign of a mature practice and of right view. Yet we understand from the teaching on dependent origination that all phenomena are dependent on causes and conditions\, that “no thing” exists on its own. This evening we will explore the idea of “abiding independent” as an inspiration for practice and study of the dhamma. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:The Art & Science of Letting It Be\nA Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde \nGrasping is not something done by the self\, but rather the self is something created by grasping. \n“What” are we letting be? What does it mean when we just let things be? Do we accept without concern the state of the world\, cruelty\, climate change\, misogyny\, racism\, etc? Perhaps we are more precise when we say “letting it be” means not adding onto the already cumbersome\, suffering self-identity that we carry around. \nToday’s daylong will address the issues that present themselves when we practice “letting it be”\, along with periods of meditation and mindful movement. \nPlease bring a vegetarian dish to share. Along with sharing with each other\, we will offer Ayya Santacitta her meal of the day. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/27/2018 – Registration opens.\n08/24/2018 – Registration via this website will close at 8:00 pm.\n08/25/2018 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Noliwe Alexander - Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Impermanence\nIs it possible to find ease and grace in a world full of change?\nIt is possible to trust the mind of non-clinging and so find our liberation within the world of impermanence. ~ Gil Fronsdal \nWe will explore this question of finding refuge in the truth of change in our uncertain and often turbulent times. While letting go of our fixed views and opening to the possibilities of freedom\, we have the opportunity to deepen our understanding of living with clarity and ease in each moment. \nNOLIWE ALEXANDER has been a student of Vipassana meditation for over 15 years. Throughout this time of deep devotion to the Dharma\, Noliwe has become a dedicated practitioner\, teacher of various sitting groups around the Bay Area\, facilitator of community workshops and Buddhist meditation day longs and class series programs. She is a Life & Business Coach dedicating both her coaching & Dharma practice to the POC\, LGBT\, At Risk and Elder communities. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s CDL4 program and completed EBMC’s Commit 2 Dharma program in 2010. Noliwe is participating in the Spirit Rock Teacher Training from 2017-2020. Noliwe is a wisdom keeper and humbled by the presence of her ancestor’s spirit that lives within and walks beside her. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.
