SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Another Piece of the Map
DESCRIPTION:Another Piece of the Map: The Meaning and Practical Importance of “Causes and Conditions”.\n Sit & Dharma Talk with Dennis Warren \nThis will be the third in a series of talks on the basic map of Buddhist practice.\n The principle of “conditionality” is central to Buddhist practice = “Everything that happens has causes and conditions\, proceeds according to causes and conditions\, and leads to results in line with causes and conditions.” If you were to remove this principle from practice\, the remaining teachers would no longer make sense.\n Understanding causes and conditions provides us with the wisdom to see into the true nature of our suffering and the way out of suffering. They are the dynamic elements that hold the comprehensive\, inter-related Buddhist teachings together in a single\, living presence. Causes and conditions replace the casual agency occupied by a deity or god figure in traditional religions.\n But what are causes and conditions from a Buddhist perspective? What is the difference between a cause and a condition? As a completely practice matter\, why are they important to the issues of daily life and suffering? He can we use these as a central element of our practice?\n Dennis’ talk will use a number of specific\, familiar situations as practical illustrations in answering these questions and in responding to questions at the end of the talk.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - We are trained to fear each other\, but not trained to hear each other
DESCRIPTION:The topic of the talk is “We are trained to fear each other\, but not trained to hear each other“ Pastor Les Simmons of Sacramento Congregations Together\, commenting after the shooting of Stephon Clark LEARNING TO LISTEN\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Diane Wilde \nPerhaps now\, more than ever\, with societal polarization leaving us fearful and taking refuge in our “tribes” — those who think and look like us — we need to consciously develop the skill to listen. We will discuss the Buddha’s advise on how to do this. Anguttura Nikaya 5.202 is a deceptively simple\, very short exhortation on how to skillfully listen to the Dharma. Yet its simple formula can easily be expanded beyond the few hours a week we come together to listen to a Dharma talk. This sutta also serves as a template on the skills we need to develop as we listen to other people — family and friends as well as strangers and people outside our ‘tribe’ — and perhaps most importantly\, how we listen to our own hearts and our inner wisdom. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \n

He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:“Blowin’ in the Wind”: The Eight Worldly Winds are “the way of the world”. Only equanimity brings balance.\n Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Rev. Diane Wilde \n \nEquanimity is a protection from the “eight worldly winds”: praise and blame\, success and failure\, pleasure and pain\, fame and disrepute. Becoming attached to or excessively elated with success\, praise\, fame or pleasure can be a set-up for suffering when the winds of life change direction\, which is inevitable. \nThe practice of equanimity is one of the most sublime emotions of Buddhist practice. It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love. While some may think of equanimity as dry neutrality or cool aloofness\, mature equanimity produces a radiance and warmth of being. \nYet when we are actually entangled in one of the eight worldly winds\, equanimity often seems a practice that is beyond our ability. At this daylong retreat\, we will discuss the teachings on — and practices that develop equanimity — as well as learning from each other as we share our own experiences\, both skillful and unskillful\, with the eight worldly winds. \nThe day will include gentle mindful movement\, periods of sitting and walking\, a Dharma discussion and sharing. \nPlease bring your lunch.  \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010.  Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n03/21/2018 – Registration opens.\n04/20/2018 – Registration fee paid on or before this date.\n04/27/2018 – Registration via this website is now closed however you can register in person on the day of the event.\n04/282018 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nPre-registration is required to secure your space at the retreat.
