SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard\, John Phelps - Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha
DESCRIPTION:Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha\nSit & Dharma Talk with with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard and SIM Community Member John “Boogie” Phelps.\nHow does our practice include the warmth of heart\, expressed freely in devotion? Sometimes it may seem as if Buddhism’s intention to relieve suffering and be awake to the way things are\, in Western practice centers\, sidesteps the personal intimacy of devotion that we see in Asian temple life\, and in other faith traditions. To whom and what is devotion given? What can we learn from others\, and from attending to our own longings and gratefulness? Rich and John have been exploring this topic and will invite our participation in that exploration. \nAfter the presentation\, Rich and Boogie will host an evening of meditation and chanting as long as people would like to stay (up to midnight). In many Theravada countries\, special practice days are observed in line with phases of the moon\, called Uposatha. On this full moon day\, you are also invited to practice the eight precepts. Chanting books will be provided. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Tony Bernhard - Exploring the Refuges
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Refuges as an Investigative Practice\nSit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Tony Bernhard \nCalling to mind The Three Refuges is usually done as a devotional practice. This discussion will look into the nature of refuge itself and ask how Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha might serve as a sanctuary for Buddhist practitioners. \nTony Bernhard is a Buddhist chaplain and teacher. He maintains an active practice with inmates in Folsom Prison and hosts sitting groups in Davis. He sits on the board of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies and teaches regularly around the bay area and central valley. His practice is non-traditional\, guided by his chaplaincy work in prison\, his teaching and by his study of the early Pali scriptures. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:A One Day Retreat– with Ayya Santacitta and SIM’s Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThe Buddha’s advise on what is insanity and how to cultivate a sound mind\nWe human beings\, in this human realm\, rarely realize that we operating in a state of of delusion. Not only are we operating in a deluded state\, we expect this current mind state to provide us a sense of happiness and well-being. Because we really have no idea what we are doing\, the goal of happiness is illusive and frustrating. This is also the Buddhist view of mental disease. Delusion is a mental illness that causes all sorts of suffering; mental health can be restored by correcting the flaws in how the mind operates. We will investigate our “mental disease” in both classical terms as well as our contemporary daily life and how we can cultivate “sanity” both for ourselves and the larger world itself. \nPlease bring a meal to share with others which includes a lunch offering to Ayya Santacitta. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nSome of the most fundamental instructions we heard about practice – “Seek nothing\, Be fearful of nothing\, and You will be free” – seem to conflict with other fundamental instructions such as not striving for any particular results of state of mind. How do we explain this situation?\nThis evening we’ll explore the answer to this apparent contradiction in fundamental instructions. Understanding why such fundamental instructions are not contradictory and not in conflict is key to a sound practice. This will be the important territory we’ll investigate Thursday evening. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - a Sutta Study Day
DESCRIPTION:The Life and Teachings of the Buddha – a Sutta Study Day\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf format)\n\nThe study of the original texts is considered an important complement to our meditation\, reflection\, and daily life practices\, and it has been a while since we offered a sutta study day at SIM. Each participant in this daylong class will receive a booklet called “The Life and Teachings of the Buddha: An Introductory Sutta Study Guide\,” written by former SIM Community Mentor Dr. Jeff Hardin\, provided with Jeff’s permission and through his generosity. Jeff has sent us 30 copies of the third edition\, so it is especially important to register in advance to ensure that we have enough copies for everyone*. We will use the booklet to move through an introduction to the Pali canon and its historical context\, the life of the Buddha\, the first two discourses of the Buddha (which include the Four Noble Truths and the Five Aggregates)\, and some of the other fundamental teachings of our tradition such as the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and Dependent Origination. Our purpose is best expressed by these words from Jeff’s Introduction: Ultimately\, it is my wish that the study of these teachings be not solely an academic exercise\, but rather that they be investigated\, reflected upon\, meditated with and put into practice within one’s life with the intention of assisting all living beings to awaken to a life free from suffering. \nThere will be some sitting and walking practice\, but this will primarily be a study day. Bring a lunch and plan to stay on site all day. \n* [The second edition of the booklet is available as a pdf through the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at this link: https://media.audiodharma.org/documents/Sutta-Study-Guide.pdf (please consider offering dana to the Sati Center if you download it).] \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. He is currently enrolled in Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. If you prefer to make a donation for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/03/2019 – Registration opens.\n06/28/2019 – Registration via this website closes at 6:30 pm.\n06/29/2019 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Is Forgiveness Always the Right Response?
DESCRIPTION:Is Forgiveness Always the Right Response?\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde \nWe read often of the power of forgiveness and are inspired by those who\, even after suffering the devastating loss of loved ones and community members\, still forgive. Is this always the right response? In the Buddha’s teachings\, patisaraniya-kamma or reconciliation — means a return to amicability\, and that requires much more than forgiveness. What are the criteria for reconciliation that the Buddha set out and what do we do if we feel reconciliation is impossible? \nThere are right and wrong ways of attempting reconciliation: those that skillfully meet the necessary requirements for reestablishing trust\, and those that don’t. To encourage right reconciliation among his followers\, the Buddha formulated detailed methods for achieving it\, along with a culture of values that encourages putting those methods to use. \nWe will discuss forgiveness\, reconciliation and what needs to take place for these conditions to occur… or not. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rev. Diane Wilde and SIM. \n[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]
