SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Peacemaking\, Outer and Inner
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nPeacemaking: Outer and InnerHumans long for peace in our lives and in our world. In our practice of boundless kindness (Metta in Pali)\, we say\, “May you be peaceful.” So\, what are the conditions that lead to peace in the outer and inner worlds? The Buddha counseled rulers about outer peace\, and gave many instructions to practitioners about inner peace. We will examine these instructions and see how we might apply them to bring peace for ourselves\, those around us\, and our world.  \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 898 3348 9002 and Passcode: 806268)For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Working with Memory\, Remembering\, Repetitive Thinking and Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Daylong In-person Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nWorking with Memory\, Remembering\, Repetitive Thinking and SufferingAlmost all of us have had this experience: After an encounter with someone\, we reflect on the situation and think they are upset with or mad at us. Repetitive thought sets in re-enforcing and strengthening our concern. We become anxious and this affects our behavior. We feel uncomfortable when we see the person\, or maybe avoid them. And then…we talk with the person and find out they were never upset or mad in the first place. This is a wonderful illustration of the Historical Buddha’s teaching that we make not just the world\, but our suffering and happiness\, with our thoughts. This one-day workshop will explore the pivotal and major role that memory\, remembering and related repetitive thinking play in our identity and suffering. We will investigate and learn how to work skillfully with these qualities of mind from the perspectives of Buddhist psychology and modern memory research. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talks\, and small and large group discussions. The day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Practice: A Path and Safety Net or Confusing Puzzle?
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nPractice: A Path and Safety Net or Confusing Puzzle? The Historical Buddha’s teaching\, psychology and practice methods are frequently referred to as a Path or The Path. Sometimes\, they are presented as a vast inter-connected net that provides us with safety and stability. For many\, however\, the elements of practice sometimes feel more like a confusing puzzle or a basket of seemingly contradictory principles and recommendations. How do the elements of practice fit together in a cohesive system of meditation and life practices that are relevant\, useful\, helpful? This evening will explore some of the fundamental principles that help us to shift from uncertainty and confusion about practice\, to an understanding of how the elements fit together and support each other. It will examine a model of doing this where core principles help us move from a sense of separation to one of connectedness and inter-relationship.The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 850 9796 2731 and Passcode: 136792 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

Some practices of meditative awareness rely on acceptance and openness\, while others require cultivation and intention. Wisdom is the skill of discerning what is needed in any given moment or phase of practice and how to adjust (or not!). On this daylong retreat\, we will explore different practices of sitting and walking meditation on different points of the spectrum from acceptance to cultivation. There will be plenty of time for practice questions and discussion.Bring a lunch and plan to stay all day. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. One aspect of insight meditation practice that we are gently cultivating is what we call concentration\, or samadhi in Pali. Buddhist scholar Bhikkhu Analayo says the term samadhi “carries nuances of a bringing together.” He writes that other translations for samadhi include “collectedness” and “composure of the mind.” In this talk\, we will explore various aspects of developing greater concentration and how it can help transform our practice and our life.  \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”14984″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 850 9796 2731 and Passcode: 136792 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Walking the Path
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nWalking the PathA community like SIM will have folks with a broad spectrum of experience and commitment to meditation and the teachings of the historical Buddha. Living into this way of mindful awareness has been likened to walking on a path. Where are you on the path? Is meditation an occasional hobby or a daily necessity? Does your practice include generosity and ethical behavior or do those qualities raise your hackles as “too religious?” What about cultivating other qualities like patience\, renunciation\, truthfulness\, kindness and equanimity (collectively known as the “paramis”). Wherever you are on the path\, you are welcome at SIM. And\, we encourage you to reflect on your practice(s) and living in harmony with your highest values. We will do just that on this evening by meditating together and discussing where we are along the path. Be prepared to ask and answer questions! \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 850 979

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - The Buddha’s To-Do List for a Happier Life
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nThe Buddha’s To-Do List for a Happier LifeDiscursive\, subtle states of mind are difficult to isolate which makes it difficult to utilize methods to lessen their negative impact on us. They just seem to be “us”\, who we are. Even though they are almost always “invisible”\, you can count on experiencing their results… anxiety and more anxiety! The Buddha describes these troubling subtle states of mind as the Ten Fetters. He offers an approach\, a sort of “To-Do List” on how to mentally address the Fetters\, and what happens when we undertake the process of recognizing them. Tonight we will do a brief overview of the Ten Fetters and their unique properties. We’ll spend additional time on the first fetter\, which is the illusion we each have concerning our own personality\, or “personality view”. We will explore this first fetter through a few brief mental exercises. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 850 9796 2731 and Passcode: 136792 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.
