SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Finding the Right Question
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\n“Finding the Right Question”\nOur search for liberation\, awakening\, liberation\, release from suffering… whatever you wish to call it\, means asking ourselves questions that get to the heart of our unease. Not an easy task when our identities\, reactivity\, judgement and life experiences obscure insight. Finding the right question and being willing to spend time with it in daily life and on the cushion is crucial for getting closer to the goal of our practice… awakening. Not an easy task due to denial and fear of what we might find out about ourselves and our views of others. \nWe will reflect on a variety of questions during this daylong. We will use guided meditation and investigation of our lives through queries and personal written reflections. The simple act of writing has the power to help us encode information and insights. \nBring a small notebook or a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil. \nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. If you prefer to make a donation for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n07/23/2021 – Registration opens.\n08/28/2021 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat. (Registration via this website closes 30 minutes before the start of the retreat on Feb 27.)\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. If you are able and interested in further supporting SIM financially\, you have the option of a registration fee of either $25 or $35 dollars. To pay the registration fee online\, use the “Tickets” section at the bottom of this page. Specify the number of people you are registering to this retreat and click the button “Get Tickets”. You’ll be automatically directed to a secure web-page where your registration payment can be made by credit card as a guest (no PayPal account required) or payment can be made by PayPal after you sign-in to your PayPal account if you have one.\nFor the registration fee\, we also accept personal checks. No one will be turned away for lack of funds; please contact the registrar for more information. \nBefore registering to this event\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \nQuestions for the Registrar?\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here. \nHow to attend this online retreat\nOnce you’ve registered\, you’ll receive an email “Ticket” that also includes the link to join the Zoom meeting. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - The Woman Who Raised the Buddha
DESCRIPTION:Mahaprajapati: The Woman Who Raised the Buddha\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center\nJoin online meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87236539276\nPasscode: 940410\nJoin by phone: 1-669-900-6833 ( Meeting ID: 872 3653 9276 )\nFor tips and instructions to join the meeting\, check this news blog. \nThursday Night Talk Dana \n[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and 75% of your donation will be shared with Rev. Diane Wilde. \nTopic details:\nMahaprajapati was the Buddha’s mother (actually his aunt who nurtured and raised him). Oddly\, little was written about her or her influence over her son\, and the establishment of the female sangha — both lay and monastic. Ancient stories about her made their way to China\, Sri Lanka and Thailand but were excluded from the Pali Canon except for one volume\, the Therigatha – “versus of the elder nuns.” Her life experience\, her approach to teaching and her relationship with the women of her sangha was generally ignored by the monks of her time\, and even now. New research and access to ancient “herstory” are now slowly becoming available. What this new information offers is a picture of a compassionate woman\, a gifted leader — who was beloved by her entire community. Mahaprajapati and her community of women had to approach the Dharma with a different sensibility due to the misogyny of that time. Their approach\, which we will discuss\, may be what is needed in today’s world as Buddhism continues to evolve.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren (via Zoom) - Is Movement Meditation?
DESCRIPTION:Is Movement “Meditation”? For this event\, the teacher will attend remote\, via Zoom.\nJoin online meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81132858630\nPasscode: 073492\nJoin by phone: 1-669-900-6833 ( Meeting ID: 811 3285 8630 )\nFor tips and instructions on how to participate\, check this news blog. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nFor remote meetings\, please use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and 75% of your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren. \nTopic details:\nYou hear people say “running is my meditation.” Or maybe yoga\, biking\, Tai Chi\, Qi Gong\, kayaking\, archery\, dancing\, golf\, swimming or gardening. Or how about aerobic exercise and weight lifting?\nAre people who talk this way talking about the same thing? Or different things? Can we be in movement\, even vigorous movement\, and simultaneously be in “meditation”?\nDuring this evening we’ll explore whether movement\, in its many different forms\, is “meditation.” If the answer is “Yes\,” what allows movement\, or a particular activity\, to become meditation? If the answer is “No\,” why not? And a pivotal question: can movement be meditation when done by one person\, but not when done by another person? What if the person is a world class Olympic athlete?\nThis will be a practical dive into a rich and wonderful field of exploration. There is a wealth of commonalities\, and valuable practice and life lessons\, that emerge from an investigation of the relationship between movement and meditation.

SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren (Re-Entry)
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRe-Entry – Maybe a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity\nCalling the process we are all beginning “Re-entry” is misleading. It implies that we are stepping back into what existed before. That isn’t true… psychologically\, emotionally or physically. The pandemic has had us all in a restricted bubble. We have changed\, whether we recognize it or not. The same is true for everyone else. The world is a different place. We are all a little different.\nComing out of this bubble in an awake\, alive and mindful way potentially represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to see\, understand and relate to ourselves\, to others and the world around us in a different\, fresh\, more expansive and healthier way.\nLouis Pasteur was the French chemist and microbiologist whose discoveries relating to vaccination and pasteurization influence our lives to this day. He was fond of saying that “chance favors the prepared mind\,” by which he meant trial\, error\, adaptation and growth. This was also the position of the Historical Buddha – “I know of no other single thing so conducive to satisfaction and happiness than a well-trained mind.”\nDuring this one-day retreat\, we’ll look at the dynamics influencing our re-entry. We’ll reflect on how we can prepare ourselves – intentionally and purposefully – to be more open\, inclusive\, accepting and kind with ourselves and with the host of challenges that await us in 2021 and 2022.\n(Pre-registration is required.) \n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher\, Professional Level (CMT-P)\, by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/ .\nDennis has been participating in residential meditation retreats\, and has maintained a daily meditation practice\, in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. 2018 was his 20th year of teaching Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential\, retreat\, educational\, medical\, corporate and community settings. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n4/07/2021 – Registration opens.\n7/31/2021 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat. (Registration via this website closes 30 minutes before the start of the retreat on Ju1 31.)\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. If you are able and interested in further supporting SIM financially\, you have the option of a registration fee of either $25 or $35 dollars. To pay the registration fee online\, use the “Tickets” section to specify the number of people you are registering to this retreat and click the button “Get Tickets”. \nUse the “Zoom Register button” to buy tickets to attend the retreat remotely via Zoom. \n \n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here.\n \nHow to attend this retreat\nOnce you’ve registered\, you’ll receive an email “Ticket”. We marvel at a sunset\, smile at an infant\, react to a political poster. These sights can bring pleasure or anger\, connection or revulsion. But are we aware of the act of seeing itself? “Why have we never noticed seeing?” asks Sayadaw U Tejaniya. We will explore the differences between looking and seeing and its implications for our formal meditation and daily life practice.
