This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. If you prefer to make a donation for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n02/15/2022 – Registration opens.04/23/2022 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.04/25/2022 – Registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\nRegistration Details\n\n\n\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. Castleman is trained in both the Jewish and Buddhist traditions. After 20 years of meditation practice and two years of silent retreat as a lay-person in the US\, India\, and Nepal and as a monk in Burma\, Seth was trained as a teacher by Jack Kornfield at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre\, CA. He was authorized as a meditation/dharma teacher in 2008. Following eight years of rabbinical studies in the US and Israel/Palestine\, Castleman was ordained in 2011 as a rabbi by one Orthodox\, one Conservative\, and one Reform rabbi. Castleman has published in two dozen newspapers\, periodicals\, and anthologies on the intersection of contemplative practice and social justice and the transformational power of brokenness. As a storyteller\, Seth has performed in theaters\, on radio and television\, and at countless kitchen tables. Seth uses myth\, storytelling\, and humor as central tools in his teaching and counseling work. Seth Castleman is married to Reverend Elizabeth Griswold\, making them\, quite possibly\, the only rabbi—Christian minister married couple in the US. Seth and Elizabeth live in Davis\, CA with their three children.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - The Paradox of Shame
DESCRIPTION:Talk topic: The Paradox of Shame\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. The teacher plans to attend in-person.\n\n\n\nWe all experience shame.  It is a universal emotion with some social scientists and psychologists saying it is an innate human trait\, and others insisting it evolved within our social fabric. It is considered an absolutely essential emotion in some societies\, and yet\, is also frequently considered mentally damaging. The causes of shame have dramatically changed\, from lack of adherence to prescriptive social mores of the past\, to shaming of individuals on social media today. The Buddha also taught about shame (hiri) and its companion\, the dread of shame (ottapa). Shame and the reasons for shame as taught by the Buddha are quite different then the “shaming” we experience in contemporary society. We will discuss this complex emotion\, its history and why it is an important\, yet often overlooked Buddhist teaching. \n\n\n\nThursday Night Talk Dana[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical BuddhaPlease use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. In 2019\, he completed Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Revisiting Fundamentals: “Right” Understanding
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting Fundamentals: “Right” Understanding\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren.\n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. The teacher will present via Zoom. \n\n\n\nDeciding what is the “Right” or skillful thing to do can be confusing when we are suffering. On one hand\, the modern interpretation of the Historical Buddha’s teachings seems to offer an endless number of potential methods and solutions. On the other\, what method or approach is actually effective in a particular situation can be elusive. The Buddha’s teachings on Right Understanding describe a straight forward\, practical and helpful model for working with confusion\, struggle and suffering. These teachings become a powerful set of tools for living\, problem solving and growth when they are combined with the teachings on Right Intention and Right Effort. Together\, they provide short term strategies for working with the immediate\, real-time challenges in our lives; as well as strategies for pointing the mind\, body and heart into long term satisfaction and peace. The subject matter of this evening is appropriate for all levels of practice. \n\n\n\nThursday Night Talk Dana[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical BuddhaPlease use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Compassion Fatigue
DESCRIPTION:Talk topic: Compassion Fatigue\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard \n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center \n\n\n\nAs practitioners of mindful awareness\, we want to remain openhearted to the suffering in the world. Our practice teaches us to turn toward conditions as they are\, without needing to avoid unpleasant sensations\, emotions\, or thoughts. This openheartedness leads naturally to compassion\, the impulse to take action on behalf of those who are experiencing suffering. However\, Western psychology has recognized a condition called “compassion fatigue\,” the “secondary trauma” that can result from helping others and that may lead to diminished capacity to empathize or feel compassion. Given all the suffering in the world and our access to it via global media\, we may be overwhelmed and start to shut down to the world and those close to us. This evening\, we will take a look at how our practice may help us recognize compassion fatigue as it develops and maintain an open heart. \n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83869249314 \,  Passcode: 053925Join by phone: 1-669-900-6833 ( Meeting ID:  838 6924 9314 ) \n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nPlease use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account.
