SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Is your meditation “working?”
DESCRIPTION:Is your meditation “working?”\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde (click here for biographical details)\n\n\n\nIs your meditation “working?”For a new practitioner as well as a person who has been meditating for some time\, it’s important to periodically evaluate our meditation practice. Perhaps you have fallen into a practice that has become as “habitual” as many other facets of your life. Or perhaps you have stopped your meditation practice altogether. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate the state of your practice through questions such as: Is this the right practice for me? Is the same practice suitable for everyone? Should I adjust my practice periodically? Has my practice lost its “juice” and how do I get it back? Sometimes a minor adjustment makes all the difference and other times an entirely different approach is needed. We will spend the day investigating our practice as well as taking part in a discussion about what each of us individually need to do to allow insight to arise. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to stay for the entire day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Other participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. We encourage everyone to attend in-person since that group experience can be so meaningful.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. Since your registration choice indicates if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person\, registering early helps us determine how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n\n\n\nAfter you’ve registered you may later offer a donation in gratitude of the teacher. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. To make a donation for this event using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n06/25/2023 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n07/29/2023 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n07/03/2023 – Online registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. The fee is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. If you are able and interested in further supporting SIM financially\, you have the option of a registration fee of either $25 or $35 dollars. Note that fee amounts above the regular rate support Sacramento Insight Meditation and is distinct from teacher dana. For the registration fee\, we also accept personal checks. No one will be turned away for lack of funds; please contact the registrar for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n July Daylong Retreat – Onsite at SDC \n $15.00 – $35.00 \n Attend In-Person\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n July Daylong Retreat – Zoom Online \n $15.00 – $35.00 \n Attend on Zoom\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here. \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe link to attend the retreat via Zoom appears in three places: The Zoom link is on this page – select the button “Join Retreat Online” to connect to the meeting.\n\n\n\nThe Zoom link is included in the automated email sent with your “Attend on Zoom” registration.\n\n\n\nThe Zoom link is https://joinconferencing.zoom.us/join\, with Meeting ID: 891 9034 2572 and Passcode: 109379

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rick Maddock - How feelings shape experience: Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:How pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism\n\n\n\n(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Rick Maddock\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\nHow pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism. The five aggregates (skandhas) together encompass all aspects of experience. Vedanā is one of the aggregates and is often defined as the feeling tone of experience ranging along a continuum from pleasant\, through neutral\, to unpleasant. The Buddha attributed great importance to mindfulness and clear comprehension of Vedanā. It is the focus of the second establishment of mindfulness in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. We will discuss the nature of Vedanā and its relationship with the other aggregates using language and perspectives from both early Buddhism and modern neuroscience. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”40088″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\nRICK MADDOCK\, MD\, is a professor of psychiatry who teaches and conducts neuroscience research at the UC Davis School of Medicine. A long-time dharma practitioner with a focus on the teachings of early Indian Buddhism\, Rick has completed Spirit Rock’s training programs for senior students and teaches dharma in the Sacramento area and Sierra foothills. His teachings explore the convergence between contemporary scientific insights about the human brain and the wisdom traditions and practices of Buddhism. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886 and Passcode: 843332 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Truthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and Profound
DESCRIPTION:Truthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and Profound\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center\n\n\n\nTruthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and ProfoundA commitment to speaking the truth brings a sense of trust and safety to our relationships\, and we reinforce this commitment when we take the fourth precept of refraining from harmful speech. Truthfulness (sacca in Pali) is also one of the Paramis\, and it is said that this commitment to speak the truth was never broken by the Buddha on his way to awakening. As the same time\, we are surrounded by a society which seems to thrive on untruthful\, deceptive\, or exaggerated communication. On this evening\, we will look at various aspects of Truth in the Buddhist teachings\, up to the profound Four Noble Truths\, and explore how we can incorporate a commitment to truthfulness in our daily lives. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting:  https://us06web.zoom.us/join ( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886) Passcode: 843332For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:2022 SIM Residential Retreat with Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for SIM’s Residential Retreat at the beautiful Mercy Center in Auburn\, CA from Sunday\, August 28\, 5:00 PM through Sunday\, September 4\, 2022\, 11:00 AM. Please read through the information below. We will update this registration page as further details are announced. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: Awareness\, Wisdom & Love\n\n\n\nAwareness is a natural capacity of the mind that is available to all of us in any moment no matter what is happening in our experience. When the mind is relaxed and at ease\, this natural awareness can be recognized and integrated into our lives. When we combine a receptive\, kindhearted attitude with relaxed yet diligent effort\, we create the conditions for insight\, wisdom\, and compassion to arise naturally.Through this process\, we see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. As our understanding deepens\, we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. This silent retreat will include instruction in both Insight and Loving-kindness meditation\, meetings with the teachers\, and an optional daily period of mindful movement. It is suitable for both beginning and experienced students of meditation. We encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\n\n\n\nDo you have a regular practice?\n\n\n\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\n\n\n\nHave you sat at a residential retreat before?\n\n\n\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact us\, click here. \n\n\n\nOur retreat teachers this year will be Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\nNEESHA PATEL\, PhD is deeply grateful for the liberative teachings of the Buddha. She has been fortunate to have practiced in both Asia and the US. Her practice has been influenced by the guidance of many wonderful teachers including Sayadaw U Tejaniya and Thai Forest Tradition teachers. She teaches mindfulness meditation at UC Davis and is a participant in the 2017-2021 Insight Meditation Society Teacher Training Program. \n(Retreat teachers biographical info)\n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. You can opt to pay the fee in full or make a deposit to hold your spot and pay the balance by June 15th. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 25 to 31 registrants. \n\n\n\nRegistration is closed but we encourage you to add your name to the waitlist as plans can change and space may open prior to the start of the retreat. \n\n\n\nAdd Your Name to the Waitlist\n\n\n\nUse the RSVP form below to add your name to the waitlist and then be on the lookout for any emails from @sactoinsight.org. The registrar will contact you with important details that can affect your place in the queue. \n\n\n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of the challenging year many have had\, partial scholarships are available if needed.
Please read through the information below and then purchase your ticket to register. \n(Retreat teachers biographical info)\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 31 registrants. \n\n\n\nBeginning Wednesday\, April 20\, this webpage will accept online registration payments. In addition to insight meditation practice\, Heather will offer teachings & guided meditations on the theme\, as well as optional Qi Gong practice & discussion about how to live these teachings in our daily lives. \n\n\n\nIn this daylong we will explore the Taking the One Seat teaching/practice from the following perspectives: \n\n\n\nSomatic\, heart and pure awareness practices which offer balance and perspective with the constant leaning in & pulling away in the mind.Learning to ‘hit rewind’ with reactive patterns growing from feeling tone into liking & disliking.Pure Awareness practice through the use of open questions and 5 aggregrates investigations\, including working with subtle identification with awareness itself.\n\n\n\nHEATHER SUNDBERG has taught insight meditation since 1999 and completed the Spirit Rock/IMS Teacher Training program under Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein.  She is currently a member of the Spirit Rock Teacher’s Council.  Beginning her own meditation practice in her late teens\, for the last three decades\, Heather has studied with senior teachers in the Insight Meditation (Vipassana) and Tibetan (Vajrayana) traditions. She has completed 3 accumulated years of retreat and has sat 1-3 months of retreat a year for the last 25 years. Between 2010- 2015 she spent a cumulative one-year in study\, practice\, and pilgrimage in Asia.  In addition\, she has training in both Somatic Experiencing and Hakomi Mindfulness Somatic Therapy and offers ‘individual meditation support sessions’ to students world-wide.  She teaches retreats nationally & internationally\, and her teaching emphasizes Awakening through the Body (1st foundation mindfulness)\, the Heart Practices (Divine Abodes)\, and Wisdom Awareness Practices (MahaSati) out of the Thai forest tradition.  For more information about Heather visit www.heathersundberg.com. \n\n\n\nThe Teacher offers the teachings freely in the tradition of the Buddha\, and her livelihood is completely sustained by the generosity of the communities she serves.  Dana (donation) for these priceless teachings will be gratefully accepted by the teacher\, giving participants the opportunity to freely engage in the practice of generosity\, the first step toward freedom. If you prefer to make an online donation for this event using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n04/11/2022 – Registration opens.06/25/2022 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.06/27/2022 – Registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\nRegistration Details\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event.
