SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Starting Over
DESCRIPTION:Starting Over \nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Rich Howard \nSenior Teacher Kamala Masters reminds us\, “Starting over is the practice.” Reflecting on this simple instruction has many implications: self-compassion\, patience\, and an encouragement to gentle\, persevering effort. We will explore the practice itself in a guided meditation to start the evening\, then discuss the many lessons to be learned from this seemingly simple instruction. Bring your beginner’s mind! \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:2018 SIM Residential Retreat
DESCRIPTION:SIM Residential Retreat with John Travis – Friday\, September 7 through Friday\, 12:00 Noon\, September 14\, 2018 \nJohn Travis\, another of SIM’s Senior Teachers who has taught many of our retreats in the past\, has graciously volunteered to teach for us again this year.  SIM is very grateful to John for his willingness to step in and lead this retreat in place of Steve Armstrong. \nFrom Effort to Ease\nThis seven-night retreat in a forest retreat grounds just outside Foresthill\, California in the Sierra Nevada foothills is suitable for both new and experienced meditators. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nJohn will emphasize the simple discipline of walking and sitting.\nResting with the good heart and unruffled mind.\nSeeing that when there is great ease there is also effortless freedom. \nBuddha emphasized over and over that it takes effort to follow the path of Dharma.\nYet the ultimate result is about the nature of ease.\nWe use effort to see into the nature of a fearful and restless mind/heart.\nThen the fundamentals of insight:\n– relaxing in the deepest recesses of our psyche\n– diminishing the power of anxiousness and dis-ease.\nUltimately finding its own good heart and relaxed mind. \nJOHN TRAVIS is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working.    More…  \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nCost\nWe’ve worked very hard to keep cost down. Registration fees are substantially lower than previous years. You can select from two different registration fee levels:     Regular: $700.00       Donor Level:  $775.00\nBoth levels cover the costs of accommodations\, meals and administration. Donor level registration reduces overall retreat costs and supports scholarship assistance for participants facing special financial demands. \nRegistration\n\nPriority Registration including $400.00 deposit for those attending Steve’s January one day retreat opens January 25 and closes February 15.\nOpen Registration including $400.00 deposit for those who did not attend Steve’s January one day retreat opens February 16. You may\, however\, register and pay the $400.00 deposit as soon as January 27. Such registrations will be accepted beginning February 16 based on date of registration order.\n\nRegistration fees do not cover any financial support for the retreat teacher. An opportunity will be provided at the end of the retreat for voluntary donations for the teacher. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - The Third Precept\, #MeToo\, and what happens now
DESCRIPTION:The Third Precept\, #MeToo\, and what happens now.\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Rev. Diane Wilde \nThe Five Precepts are the training in moral conduct for the individual as well as providing safety for all sentient beings. The third precept is; “I will train in refraining from sexual misconduct”. This precept is generally recited along with the other four\, but rarely discussed in great length. Dharma teachers sometimes find it to be an uncomfortable topic and even amongst Buddhist scholars\, there are differences on its interpretation. \nContemporary society is now contending with the ramifications of sexual misconduct (and alleged sexual misconduct) at all levels of society\, and Buddhist teachers and students are not immune. Reports of allegations of predatory behavior are now being openly discussed in all three major Buddhist traditions\, Theravada\, Mahayana and Vajryana. Currently\, recognized teachers in all three are being accused of sexual exploitation of students and others. \nTonight we will look at the actual teachings regarding the Third Precept\, how it is effecting our teachers and our own lives\, and how do we as a community contend with what is taking place. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \n

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Noliwe Alexander - Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Impermanence\nIs it possible to find ease and grace in a world full of change?\nIt is possible to trust the mind of non-clinging and so find our liberation within the world of impermanence. ~ Gil Fronsdal \nWe will explore this question of finding refuge in the truth of change in our uncertain and often turbulent times. Throughout this time of deep devotion to the Dharma\, Noliwe has become a dedicated practitioner\, teacher of various sitting groups around the Bay Area\, facilitator of community workshops and Buddhist meditation day longs and class series programs. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:The Art & Science of Letting It Be\nA Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde \nGrasping is not something done by the self\, but rather the self is something created by grasping. \n“What” are we letting be? What does it mean when we just let things be? Do we accept without concern the state of the world\, cruelty\, climate change\, misogyny\, racism\, etc? Perhaps we are more precise when we say “letting it be” means not adding onto the already cumbersome\, suffering self-identity that we carry around. \nToday’s daylong will address the issues that present themselves when we practice “letting it be”\, along with periods of meditation and mindful movement. \nPlease bring a vegetarian dish to share. Along with sharing with each other\, we will offer Ayya Santacitta her meal of the day. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/27/2018 – Registration opens.\n08/24/2018 – Registration via this website will close at 8:00 pm.\n08/25/2018 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Abiding Independent
DESCRIPTION:Abiding Independent\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Mentor Rich Howard \nThe Satipattahana Sutta (the Discourse on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness) is at the center of our practice of meditation in the Vipassana (Insight) tradition. The refrain of the Sutta includes this phrase: the practictioner “abides independent\, not clinging to anything in the world.” Other suttas use “knowledge independent of others” as a sign of a mature practice and of right view. Yet we understand from the teaching on dependent origination that all phenomena are dependent on causes and conditions\, that “no thing” exists on its own. This evening we will explore the idea of “abiding independent” as an inspiration for practice and study of the dhamma. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.
