SUMMARY:MBSR Class Introductory Session
DESCRIPTION:MBSR Introduction Session\nThis is an Introductory Session of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. \n\nMBSR Flyer with more information\n\nAt the bottom of this page\, you may enter the number of people planning to attend this session and select the button “Confirm RSVP“.\nThis is an introductory to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM starting April 24\, 2019. Designed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979\, MBSR is an integrative and scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness practices with group processing and psycho-education around stress. MBSR helps participants mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness\, as well as conditions such as anxiety\, depression\, headaches\, high blood pressure\, sleep disturbances\, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life. This work was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special\, “Healing and the Mind” in a dated but still compelling piece. \n Instructor: Matt Russell\, PhD\, is a UMass Med School Center for Mindfulness qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and has been a member of the SIM community since 2010. Matt is a graduate of the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies’ Chaplaincy Training Program in Redwood City. He has completed trainings with Mindful\nSchools and taught mindfulness to teenagers. \n

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Greed and Mindfulness of Death
DESCRIPTION:Greed and Mindfulness of Death\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard \nN O T E  – Due to technical difficulties\, we couldn’t include this talk in our Audio Dharma library. \nRich recently started a short series on working with the three roots of suffering – greed\, hatred\, and delusion. We looked at one version of hatred\, anger\, in February and one of its antidotes\, patience\, in March. On this evening\, we will look at greed (desire\, lobha\, sensual attachment) and one of its antidotes – mindfulness of death (maranasati). \nThe Buddha said\, “Mindfulness of death—when developed and pursued—is of great fruit and great benefit.” (AN 6:20)\nWhat are some of the benefits of looking at a subject that our culture often goes out of its way to avoid? What are some contemporary practices that we may use to work with desire beyond the practices recommended for monastics in India in 500 BCE? As with the previous two sessions in this series\, there will be handout of resources. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rich Howard and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Communicating with the “Other”
DESCRIPTION:Communicating with the “Other”\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\nOur polarized society has caused many of us to not only avoid speaking to those who don’t share our political\, spiritual or cultural views\, but to avoid them altogether. Social scientists state that the animosity towards the “other” is as extreme as it was in the 60s and 70s during the Vietnam war. And yet\, it has never been as critical to speak about the perilous issues that effect everyone. Speaking to each other is a task we all must undertake because we now have no choice. Avoidance has been creating its own downward trajectory… the climate crisis worsens\, and political polarity has resulted in societal paralysis. \nTonight we will discuss steps we might consider taking in communicating with the “other.” The Buddha offered advise in many suttas\, and contemporary social scientists have weighed in on how to begin a conversation eliminating rigidly held dogma or self-righteous anger. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Patience: Antidote and Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Patience: Antidote and Perfection\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nBuilding on SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard’s talk on anger last month\, this evening’s presentation will explore the Buddhist view of patience. In his recent book “Perfecting Patience: Buddhist Techniques to Overcome Anger\,” the Dalai Lama writes\, “The only factor that can give refuge or protection from the destructive effects of anger and hatred is the practice of tolerance and patience.” So\, first we will look at this function of patience as an antidote. \nWe will then look at patience as one of the Paramis\, qualities we need to cultivate and develop to be truly free. The Historical Buddha called Patience the highest virtue\, so we will look into this important but seldom appreciated mind state. This will also be a good opportunity to inquire into the linked practices of refraining from harmful activities and cultivating healthy ones.\nRich will be available for discussion at the community potluck preceding this presentation.

Please bring your dinner and something extra to share\, if you would like. We can continue to get to know one another and talk more about how SIM can support us in our practice. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Working with Difficult Thinking
DESCRIPTION:The Important Things To Know In Working With Difficult\, Problematic and Obsessive Thinking.\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nWe all know that our minds have “a mind of their own.” It’s not uncommon to find ourselves in situations where we can’t stop thinking about things we don’t want to think about. Or we can’t think the way we want to think in dealing with highly emotional or pressurized issues. Thinking can be difficult\, problematic\, obsessive…and more. It plays a major role in nearly every\, if not every\, intra-personal\, interpersonal and existential question\, delima and dysfunction.\nThis evening will examine what’s important to know in working with thinking. What do we do when we are faced with a mind that seems out of control? How do we deal with thinking that just won’t stop? How do we develop the ability to think clearly and productively when we want to? What are the underlying principles that will help us understanding our thinking patterns and what to do about them?\nThere are basic approaches that will apply to all these topics whether your particular mind’s approach to “thinking” is based primarily on logic\, kinesthetic or body based\, through imagery or emotion\, or one of the other ways the mind processes information\, relates to experience and makes decisions.\nIn preparation for this evening\, please consider the following basic questions: \n\nWhat is “thinking” based on the teachings of the historical Buddha?\nWhat is “thinking” from a meditative and practice perspective?\n\nThis will be an interesting\, fun and\, ultimately\, practical evening. Everyone is welcome. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Entering the Stream\, Dealing with Doubt
DESCRIPTION:The Second in a series on “Entering the Stream” of Awakening. To listen to Diane first talk on this subject\, click here. \nEntering the Stream to Awakening\, Dealing with Doubt\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde \nYogis who are sincere in their practice\, and desire to alleviate suffering are said to be on the precipice of “Entering the Stream”. A Stream-Enterer\, known as a Sotapanna in Pali\, the ancient language of the Buddha\, is a practitioner who is well on the path to “awakening”\, which means cutting through and eliminating the fetters that cause suffering. The first fetter is understanding the delusion of self-identity\, the belief that each of us is a separate entity unto ourselves. The second fetter to be uprooted is doubt. Tonight we will briefly discuss self-identity\, which will be the topic of the Feb. 23rd daylong and examine in more detail\, the second “fetter” of doubt. Doubt is traditionally seen as having two aspects: skillful doubt\, which prods us into deeper experiential investigation of the path\, and unskillful doubt\, which is a dead-end\, leading to confusion and unhappiness. We will discuss the characteristics of both types of doubt and how skillful doubt is an aid in navigating the difficulties we often encounter in our own practice. Unskillful doubt is abandoned as we Enter the Stream. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rev.
