SUMMARY:7-Night Residential Retreat with Greg Scharf
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat with Greg Scharf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: Finding a True Refuge\n\n\n\nIn a world of change and unpredictability\, in times that often feel chaotic and confusing\, where do we look for ease and security? Often\, in our search for a dependable refuge\, we mistakenly turn to that which is essentially unreliable and unable to provide the stability we seek. \n\n\n\nInsight (or Vipassana) meditation is the simple\, direct observation of the mind/body process with relaxed\, open and careful attention. As we connect with our experience from a place of spacious stillness and steadiness\, we learn to meet the changing conditions we encounter with greater ease and balance of mind. As our understanding deepens\, equanimity in the face of change grows\, and we discover a refuge that is to a great extent independent of life’s changing conditions. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike and will include meditation instruction\, Dharma talks\, practice meetings with the teacher\, and optional mindful movement. A Meditation retreat is a rare opportunity to take time away from our usual activities for the express purpose of turning inward in order to deepen our understanding of what it actually means to be human. Time on retreat connects us with what we truly value in life and gives us the time & space to deepen our understanding of who & what we really are. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration (Closed)\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 27 registrants. Beginning Saturday\, September 9\, this webpage will accept online registration payments. Before making any payment\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so. If needed\, contact the retreat registrar with your request to pay a 50% deposit. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n\n\nThanks for Attending the Retreat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudio Recordings\n\n\n\nFor a limited time\, talks and meditations recorded during the retreat are available to everyone that attended. To access the audio files\, click here. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of potentially challenging times\, partial scholarships might be available if needed. To request a partial scholarship\, pay a $225 deposit fee after registration opens and before September 30th. Then watch for a follow-up email from the retreat registrar. SIM has a limited number of partial scholarships available based on need. If the $225 deposit payment is currently not possible\, contact the retreat registrar to apply for a scholarship with other options. \n\n\n\nScholarship Donations\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to contribute into the scholarship fund to help someone else be able to afford this special dharma opportunity\, enter the amount you’d like to donate in the DONATE NOW box. Donating into the fund won’t register you for the retreat. \n\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”25463″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\nCancellations\n\n\n\n\nThrough September 30th\, full refund if requested by this date if someone on the waiting list takes the reservation.\n\n\n\nOn or after October 15th\, deposit will be retained by SIM. Balance may be refundable if the spot is filled by a wait-listed person. Otherwise\, the balance will not be refunded. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on a request demonstrating financial hardship.\n\n\n\n\nSchedule – Summary of Dates\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Registration opens; online payments accepted.\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request full refund (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request a scholarship (see scholarship details listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Last day to request refund of balance paid (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Registration payment in full due.\n\n\n\nTBD – Registration closes\, date to be announced.\n\n\n\nNovember 12 – The retreat begins (check-in starts at 3:30 PM).\n\n\n\nNovember 19 – The retreat ends (check-out at 11:00 AM).\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nOur priority is to protect the wellbeing of everyone who attends the SIM Annual Retreat. The SIM Board will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and required and recommended safety measures from federal\, State and local health agencies\, and the Mercy Center\, with consideration of our Sangha demographics. \n\n\n\nAt a minimum\, we will require proof of vaccinations and boosters (if eligible) for COVID-19 at least two weeks before the retreat\, along with proof of COVID rapid testing within 24 hours prior to attending and a second rapid test two days into the retreat (SIM will provide tests if needed). \n\n\n\nAdditional protocols will very likely include masking when indoors with others\, and social distancing as space allows. \n\n\n\nSIM will update the protocols to reflect the situation in the summer. \n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - “I Feel More Comfortable When I’m Tense”
DESCRIPTION:“I Feel More Comfortable When I’m Tense”\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\n“I Feel More Comfortable When I’m Tense”One insight that unfolds in many layers is how we hold\, brace\, and defend against experiences that make us feel vulnerable\, uncertain\, confused or at risk. These form into deeply embedded patterns in both the body and mind. These patterns are the result of years of self-protective thoughts\, habits\, assumptions\, projections\, and actions.Understanding these patterns brings the practical real-life problems associated with fixed views\, and attachment to outcomes\, into focus. It frames the common difficulties and challenges of being human\, including self-sabotage\, into a more workable Buddhist framework.  And it provides a basis for opening to\, and experiencing\, more accessible and meaningful forms of empathy and compassion. This evening will explore this field of experiences through practical common situations in meditation and everyday living. The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 862 2575 6048 and Passcode: 302015 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - The Left Wing & The Right Wing Belong to the Same Bird (Inclusion)
DESCRIPTION:The Left Wing & The Right Wing Belong to the Same Bird (Inclusion)\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Left Wing & The Right Wing Belong to the Same Bird (Inclusion) \n\n\n\nOur minds tend to see the world as dualistic. Life – personal\, relationship\, financial\, political choices – seems to be limited to two dimensional competing alternatives\, an either/or proposition. \n\n\n\nUnless we pause and step back from the drama of the moment\, we lose touch with the nuance\, beauty\, and multi-dimensional nature of life\, and life choices. We fail to see and experience the underlying reality that the world operates on a wide continuum of related and inter-dependent events\, experiences\, and choices. \n\n\n\nWe lose access to the most important\, skillful\, and healing life option – collaborating with life as it is\, and collaborating with others as they are. \n\n\n\nThis Thursday evening will explore this field of experiences through common situations in meditation and everyday living. \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n( Meeting ID: 820 8055 1704 and Passcode: 254668 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Pleasant\, Unpleasant\, Neutral\, Numb: Exploring the Second Foundation of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Rich Howard click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center\n\n\n\nPleasant\, Unpleasant\, Neutral\, Numb: Exploring the Second Foundation of MindfulnessWe rightly place strong emphasis on mindfulness of the body and mindfulness of mind states in our practice of meditation and everyday awareness. These are the first and third ways of establishing mindfulness as described in the Satipatthana Sutta\, one of the core teachings of our Insight tradition. Sometimes overlooked is the Second Foundation of Mindfulness: mindfulness of feeling tone (vedana in Pali). A feeling tone of pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neutral accompanies every experience\, physical or mental. Unnoticed\, these feeling tones can escalate to desire\, aversion\, or delusion and cause us to suffer. When noticed\, they can lead us to expand our range of situations where we can feel okay\, regardless of outside circumstances. On this evening\, we will explore vedana in our guided meditation and in the dharma talk and following discussion. Rich encourages you to practice noticing vedana in the week leading up to this evening\, so you can report directly from your experience in the discussion session. If you are unfamiliar with the practice and need instruction\, email Rich at rich@sactoinsight.org. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 820 8055 1704 and Passcode: 254668 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

Often we compare ourselves to others and find we don’t measure up in some way. Envy and jealousy are the opposites of sympathetic joy. The Buddha encouraged us to challenge our assumptions and to cultivate this capacity to find joy in the good fortune of others. Ajahn Pasanno says\, “Cutting through self-view is the Buddha’s unique contribution to spiritual practice. Mudita is antithetical to the self-view that we carry around with us and leads us to a place of boundless and immeasurable joy.” \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”14984″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 820 8055 1704 and Passcode: 254668 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

We make the world with our thoughts.Thoughts are so powerful because they shape our beliefs\, assumptions\, and expectations. They act as lenses thru which we perceive and understand the world. When these become fixed – and they usually do – we have the same experience over-and-over even though the circumstances and persons keep changing. This phenomenon – fixed thoughts and views shaping our lives and resulting in suffering – is at the center of Buddhist psychology and practice. This Thursday evening will explore this field of experiences through common situations in meditation and everyday living. The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 820 8055 1704 and Passcode: 254668 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Three Truths and One Path
DESCRIPTION:Meditation & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nThree Truths and One PathCommunity Teacher Rich Howard will combine Thursday 2/22 and Saturday 2/24 into an extended exploration of the four noble truths. You may attend either session or both. Rich will be in person for both. \n\n\n\nIn his latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023)\, American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi describes the four noble truths as “the matrix of the teachings” and “not merely as one Buddhist doctrine among others\, but more broadly as the implicit framework of the whole teaching.” The Thursday talk and discussion will address the first three Truths: 1) Dukkha (unsatisfactoriness/vulnerability/suffering)\, 2) the Cause of Dukkha (tanha\, or craving/leaning in/turning away)\, and 3) the Cessation of Dukkha (nirodha\, extinction\, liberation). We will look at each Truth in detail\, discuss how they are “ennobling\,” and see how understanding them can be found in formal practice and daily life. This evening will lead us into the February 24 daylong retreat\, where we will explore the fourth truth\, the noble eightfold path\, in both theory and practice. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 820 8055 1704 and Passcode: 254668 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

You may attend either session or both. \n\n\n\nWhile Thursday evening’s session introduced the first three truths\, Saturday’s daylong retreat will be a deeper dive into the fourth truth\, the path to the end of suffering. As a framework for this exploration\, we will use the three trainings of the path: the training in sila (ethical conduct\, harmonious living)\, the training in samadhi (concentration\, collectedness of mind)\, and the training in pañña (wisdom\, insight\, understanding). Through guided meditation\, short dharmettes\, and discussion\, we will see how these trainings free us from unskillful thoughts\, speech\, and actions\, from obsessive mind states\, and ultimately from dukkha (unsatisfactoriness/vulnerability/suffering) itself. The day will also feature readings from American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi’s latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023). We invite you to this special opportunity to deepen your practice in community with others on Thursday evenings. \n\n\n\n\nMarch 21                Generosity           Dennis Warren \n\n\n\n\nGenerosity: A Mirror\, A Doorway\, A PathThe Historical Buddha considered Generosity the first and foundational parami (or essential quality of mind & heart that leads to awakening.) While the possibilities for giving and sharing are endless\, we frequently not only miss the opportunity to be generous\, but fail even to see the opportunities. \n\n\n\nThis evening will explore Generosity as a practice of spiritual development\, rather than isolated and disconnected acts of giving or sharing. It will examine a model of doing this where Generosity serves as a mirror\, a doorway and a path moving from a sense of separation to connectedness and inter-relationship. It will include discussion of the Historical Buddha’s advice that we should be generous in the way we think\, and by thinking\, create the world we live in. \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well.
