You may attend either session or both. Rich will be in person for both. \n\n\n\nIn his latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023)\, American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi describes the four noble truths as “the matrix of the teachings” and “not merely as one Buddhist doctrine among others\, but more broadly as the implicit framework of the whole teaching.” The Thursday talk and discussion will address the first three Truths: 1) Dukkha (unsatisfactoriness/vulnerability/suffering)\, 2) the Cause of Dukkha (tanha\, or craving/leaning in/turning away)\, and 3) the Cessation of Dukkha (nirodha\, extinction\, liberation). We will look at each Truth in detail\, discuss how they are “ennobling\,” and see how understanding them can be found in formal practice and daily life. The day will also feature readings from American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi’s latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023). While the possibilities for giving and sharing are endless\, we frequently not only miss the opportunity to be generous\, but fail even to see the opportunities. \n\n\n\nThis evening will explore Generosity as a practice of spiritual development\, rather than isolated and disconnected acts of giving or sharing. It will examine a model of doing this where Generosity serves as a mirror\, a doorway and a path moving from a sense of separation to connectedness and inter-relationship. It will include discussion of the Historical Buddha’s advice that we should be generous in the way we think\, and by thinking\, create the world we live in. \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. In the West\, we refer to Vipassana meditation as “Insight Meditation” because it produces Insight – a spontaneous\, sudden change in how we understand ourselves and the world based on direct experience. During this evening we’ll explore the nature of the Insight experience and the difference in Insight which cognitive and that based on direct experience. We’ll also consider its different types – Insight that arises\, and is interpreted\, thru the self or ego\, and Insight which is “liberating” because it allows us to experience the world without the management\, control and interference of the self or ego. \n\n\n\nThis evening will be helpful for those attending Dennis’ one day retreat / workshop on Saturday\, May 25 entitled “When Life Changes.” The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. Some gradual. Some big. Some\, at least initially\, small. Changes in relationships\, finances\, jobs\, living circumstances. Changes in capacity – mental\, emotional\, physical. Changes in health and quality of life. Changes in ourselves\, in those we know\, in the world as we have known it. \n\n\n\nOur actual experience of change frequently catches us off guard even when the change itself is anticipated. We feel unprepared\, disoriented\, disorganized. Buddhist practices offer the possibility of being prepared for change\, even when we have no idea what it will be. They offer the possibility of experiencing change as possibility\, rather than primarily as obstacle or problem. \n\n\n\nThis day will explore Buddhist perspectives\, tools and practices that help us work with change large and small. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talk\, and small and large group discussions. \n\n\n\nThe day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. These factors can be aroused either individually or sequentially and can lead to a very still\, peaceful and balanced mind. There will be time for questions and sharing. Suitable for both beginning and more experienced practitioners. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. All participants will attend in-person as the retreat will not be available via Zoom.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below.
