SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Walt Opie - Right Concentration
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Walt Opie\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Walt Opie\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nRight ConcentrationAs part of our ongoing series\, this talk will examine the final factor of the Noble Eightfold Path\, which is Right Concentration. Practicing Right Effort and Right Mindfulness\, in combination with a strong foundation in ethical behavior (Right Speech\, Right Action\, Right Livelihood) leads eventually to a more focused or unified mind that is easily able to stay with one object like the breath or to maintain continuous awareness as the objects of our attention change (thoughts\, sights\, sounds\, tastes\, etc). With this steady\, still\, undistracted mind\, we are then ready to cultivate insight which leads to wisdom (Right View\, Right Intention) and potentially to full awakening. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nWalt Opie will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Feb 5 Walt from the dropdown list. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE – Thu Talk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 862 9909 1295 and Passcode: 115163)For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Right Effort
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nRight EffortTonight we continue our series on the Noble Eightfold Path with Right Effort\, the first of the “Samadhi” factors\, the teachings that deal with mental cultivation. \n\n\n\nRight Effort addresses our inner life: preventing unwholesome states from arising\, letting go of those that have already appeared\, and cultivating and sustaining wholesome qualities of mind. Traditionally\, it is not about striving or self-pressure\, but about wise discernment—knowing what nourishes clarity\, kindness\, and freedom\, and what leads to suffering. Learning what sort of effort to expend in our sitting meditation is crucial for developing insight. In daily life\, Right Effort shows up as choosing where we place our attention\, how we respond to habits and emotions\, and when we gently redirect ourselves rather than push or judge. It is the practice of effort that is balanced\, humane\, and aligned with our deepest values. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Jan 29 Diane from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Continuity of Awareness: A Day of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat with SIM Senior Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nContinuity of Awareness: A Day of PracticeMindfulness is at the heart of our practice in the Insight/Vipassana tradition. Since formal meditation with our community and more intensive practice on retreat are so rewarding\, it is tempting to view these formal settings as the primary places to develop the skill/habit of maintaining awareness. However\, it is the continuity of awareness\, rather than scattered short intervals of more intensive practice\, that really bears fruit and transforms our understanding\, our behavior and our relationships. As the contemporary Burmese monk Sayadaw U Tejaniya puts it: “Mindfulness is a lifetime commitment\, not a part-time job. It is something that you really\, really need to do all the time. All the time.”In this daylong retreat\, we will explore awareness in the style of Sayadaw U Tejaniya\, with short instructional talks from Rich and ample opportunity for loosely structured sitting and walking practice\, as well as question/response periods. There will also be opportunities for one-on-one practice check-ins. The daylong will be offered in-person only at the Sacramento Dharma Center.Plan to bring a lunch and stay all day. The intention for the day is to leave participants with confidence in their ability to increase continuity of awareness in formal meditation and diverse situations of daily life\, in this world\, right now. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the SDC. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Speech\, Action\, Livelihood: Where the Rubber meets the Path
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nSpeech\, Action\, Livelihood: Where the Rubber meets the PathIn this second part of our six-week exploration of the Noble Eightfold Path\, we will delve into the three components of the training in sila\, the development of ethical conduct. While some elements of the Path may sound theoretical or far from our experience\, the practices of skillful speech\, right action\, and our very livelihood are at the heart of our everyday lives\, whether or not we consider ourselves “Buddhist.” Connecting these areas of our life to the other Path factors like intention and mindfulness brings richness and depth to everyday activities\, enhances the quality of our relationships\, and brings ease and the “bliss of blamelessness” to our lives “off the cushion.” The mission of Sacramento Insight Meditation is to integrate “meditation practices and awareness in all aspects of individual\, family\, educational\, institutional\, work\, and community life.” The training in sila is the way to do that. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nRich Howard will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Jan 15 Rich from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - LOVE
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nLOVEThis one day that will explore the nature of Love that is individual and possessive vs that which is plural and non-attached. We’ll examine different viewpoints within Buddhism\, as well as other spiritual systems. While the difference between these two types of love may initially seem clear\, the actual experience and expressions of Love — when it is freed from craving\, clinging and identification — are diverse\, rich\, and inspiring. \n\n\n\nBefore his passing\, the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh gifted us with a beautiful and insightful little book entitled “How To Love.” In its pages\, he offers a direct and heartfelt exploration of what it truly means to love—ourselves\, one another\, all beings\, the natural world\, and the Dharma itself. True to its title\, he gently shows us how to practice this love in our daily lives. While Thich Nhat Hanh lived and practiced within the Mahayana Zen tradition\, the wisdom in this book resonates deeply with the psychology\, teachings\, and methods of the Historical Buddha in our Theravadan/Vipassana approach to Buddhism. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an exploration of: \n\n\n\n\nWhat does Love mean from a Buddhist perspective?\n\n\n\nHow does it differ from our conventional understanding of love?\n\n\n\nHow can this particular approach to Love enrich our lives?\n\n\n\nWhat are specific\, practical ways we can integrate this form of Love into our daily lives and relationships?\n\n\n\n\nImportant Note: Reading and becoming familiar with the teachings in “How To Love” before the retreat will help you get the most out of our time together. During this one day\, we’ll have at least one period of mindful movement\, so please bring your yoga mat. The session will be led by Sandra (Sam) Halford\, a member of our community who is both a therapist and a trauma-sensitive certified yoga instructor. Plan to stay with us on site for the entire day\, and please bring a lunch to enjoy during our midday break. We warmly welcome you to join us in person on Saturday\, December 29th for this exploration of Love. We look forward to practicing together! \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. All participants will attend in-person as the retreat will not be available via Zoom.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration button shown below. Since your registration choice indicates that you’ll be attending in-person\, registering early helps us determine how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n\n\n\nAfter you’ve registered you may later offer a donation in gratitude of the teacher. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n11/22/2025 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n12/27/2025 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n12/27/2025 – For registration after the retreat\, send a message to the registrar to arrange payment.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nSelect the Register Now button to indicate you’ll be attending in-person. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Are You Listening?
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nAre You Listening?Really listening to another is an incredible skill… it’s almost magical.  When we listen to another\, we are not only giving them the gift of our whole-hearted attention\, we are also taming the ego-driven addiction of impatiently waiting for OUR turn to speak.  When the Buddha spoke about Right Speech\, he was including both sides of the communication equation; skillful means of intentional speech as well as intentional listening to others.  Intentionally listening also means listening to ourselves\, to our own innate wisdom which we often ignore. Skillful Listening is a mindful practice that changes attitudes and beliefs as well as enhances empathy and community.  It is a great gift to bring into this New Year… for ourselves\, our friends\, and to those with whom we disagree. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Dec 11 Diane from the dropdown list. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE – Thu Talk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 893 8282 0540 and Passcode: 121034)For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - What Are We Supposed to “See Clearly”
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nWhat Are We Supposed to “See Clearly”One of the fundamental teachings we hear regularly is to “see things clearly as they are.” But Seeing Clearly is not an inherent quality of mind. It is a skill that matures through intentional development. Join us this evening to explore these questions:* What does it mean to “see clearly”?* What are we supposed to see clearly?* Why is seeing clearly so important?* What are the obstacles to seeing clearly? And what do we do about them?* How do we develop this skill? \n\n\n\nThe presentation and discussion will include a practical examination\, and handout\, of the critical elements of the Historical Buddha’s Psychology of Causation which explains the nature of suffering. We’ll apply Seeing Clearly to the stressful dynamics of being with family during the holidays.Whether you’re just beginning your practice\, or have been on the path for years\, you’ll find something helpful in this exploration. We welcome you to join us either in person or via ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person. He encourages you to be there in person too to meet with old as well as new friends\, and enjoy an evening of community and exploring the Buddha’s teachings. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDennis Warren will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Nov 20 Dennis from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Greatest Blessings
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nGreatest BlessingsIn this season of gratitude\, Rich will bring reflections on the “greatest blessings” from the Maha-Mangala Sutta (Sutta Nipata 2.4). When asked to tell the greatest blessing\, the Buddha gave a short discourse in verse containing 38 blessings. This beloved sutta reminds us that\, even in the midst of loss and grief\, our ordinary lives contain so many sources of gratitude and happiness. In balancing our awareness of suffering with the uplifting conditions in life\, we come closer to seeing things as they are. This awareness provides a balance to our daily life practice and a motivation for skillful action in the world.Rich last offered a reflection on this sutta three years ago\, as we celebrated 20 years of SIM. This evening will be structured differently\, as we will explore the Buddha’s examples in small group discussions to find sources of happiness relevant to our lives today. November 13\, 2025 \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nRich Howard will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Nov 13 Rich from the dropdown list.

\n\n\n\n\nDemystifying the Two Dimensions of RealityThe Historical Buddha’s teachings invite us to explore two profound dimensions of reality. Traditionally known as the Relative and Absolute (or Conventional and Ultimate) “truths”.  They are often misunderstood as abstract philosophical concepts.Instead\, these two dimensions offer us complementary and inter-dependent ways of understanding our lived experience here on planet earth\, in this universe. They also open two distinct pathways for practice that can enrich and deepen our journey.Join us this evening as we explore together: what each dimension really means; the unique role each plays in our practice; how each relates to the other; and why weaving both experiences into our daily lives is essential for moving towards greater satisfaction\, peace\, and awakening.Whether you’re just beginning your practice or have been on the path for years\, you’ll find something helpful in this exploration. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Mudita: “Finding joy in the happiness and well-being of others.” Why can it often be so difficult?
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nMudita: “Finding joy in the happiness and well-being of others.” Why can it often be so difficult?Thursday October 23 is the first in a series of talks prepared for the SIM mini-retreat which takes place on October 24 and 25. The mini-retreat is entitled\, “Applying the Buddha’s Antidotes in Daily Life.”   \n\n\n\nThe first talk is on Mudita\, also known as Sympathetic Joy. Mudita can be defined as enjoying the good fortune or happiness experienced by others as well as ourselves. In today’s fast-paced\, phone-obsessed\, competitive society\, we bypass much of the joy in our lives as well as in the lives of others. Additionally due to societal polarization\, as well as the emphasis on winning—no matter what it takes—we often find ourselves engaging in mind states that are the direct opposite of mudita.  Due to jealousy\, anger\, and toxic competitiveness\, we find ourselves taking delight in the misfortune of others.  This “dark glee” is called schadenfreud and continually engaging in this mind state has severe repercussions including the exacerbation of depression and anxiety. Tonight we will learn practical methods for decreasing schadenfreud and for elevating mudita in our lives\, thus increasing our own contentment\, ease and a sense of true connection with others. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Oct 23 Diane from the dropdown list.
