In this Dharma talk\, we will explore how embodied compassion can become a liberating practice as we face the realities of an impermanent and mortal body.Drawing from the early teachings of the Buddha\, guided reflections\, and stories from Jeff’s work as a physician\, we’ll investigate how cultivating kind and mindful awareness of the body can support insight\, soften fear\, open the heart\, and deepen our capacity to meet life and death with wisdom and love. The experience of letting go is the center piece of practice that slowly freeing the mind and heart from struggle and suffering. \n\n\n\nBut how does one actually let go? This will be the focus of this day of practice. \n\n\n\nWe’ll use practical\, real-life situations to help participants connect their own experiences with the teachings. We’ll investigate the process of letting go and its development as an on-going\, daily gesture of wisdom and compassion. The day will also examine common misunderstandings – such as equating letting go with suppression\, indifference\, avoidance or by passing – and offer reflections\, meditation methods\, and mantras for daily use. \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this one-day will be appropriate for all stages of practice. Yet sustaining and developing our practice of mindful awareness requires listening to our heart’s subtle whispers\, and applying that practice in the world requires listening to the cries of the world to find where compassion is needed most. In addition\, our relationships require a deep listening to spoken and silent expressions of connection. More importantly for our purposes\, they are teaching lessons about the qualities of heart and mind to be developed if we want to get free from the grips of greed\, aversion\, and delusion. For this evening’s presentation\, Rich will read Jataka 33\, the Sammodamana Jataka. We will then break into small groups (both in person and on Zoom) to discuss the lessons we can find from this simple story. There is a well-known sutta or discourse (MN 20) whose translated title is “The Removal of Distracting Thoughts.” We will explore the advice offered by the Buddha in this sutta\, as well as other teachings on this subject. Anchored in the Buddha’s teachings\, the retreat offers practices to awaken awareness\, calm the mind\, and nurture the qualities of lovingkindness\, compassion\, and equanimity. Suitable for both beginners and seasoned practitioners\, the program includes systematic meditation guidance (including metta/lovingkindness)\, Dharma talks\, and opportunities to meet with teachers to discuss your practice. Through stillness and presence\, participants will cultivate insight\, wisdom\, patience\, self-compassion and resilience for daily life. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates no more than 25 registrants. Registration on this webpage opened on January 29.The registration fee is $1000\, with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and a portion of SIM’s administration costs. Once you fill out the registration form\, you will receive an invoice to be paid upon receipt. If the retreat fills before you complete your registration\, you will have the opportunity to add your name to the wait list. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow. However\, if needed\, you may pay a 50% deposit and the remaining balance must be paid by February 28. Being aware of our state of mind\, we are less likely to react unconsciously when things don’t go our way. While we may be familiar with noticing what is present\, the historical Buddha instructed us in the Satipatthana Siutta section on “mindfulness of mind” (cittanupassana) to be aware also of what is absent: “ It’s when a [practitioner] understands mind with greed as ‘mind with greed\,’ and mind without greed as ‘mind without greed.’ They understand mind with hate as ‘mind with hate\,’ and mind without hate as ‘mind without hate.’ They understand mind with delusion as ‘mind with delusion\,’ and mind without delusion as ‘mind without delusion.’ etc.” In this daylong retreat\, we will explore awareness in the style of Sayadaw U Tejaniya\, with short instructional talks from Rich and ample opportunity for loosely structured sitting and walking practice\, as well as question/response periods.  \n\n\n\nPlan to bring a lunch and stay all day. While this sounds straightforward\, the psychology\, multitude of methods\, and 1000s of the Buddha’s discourses can make understanding how to end suffering unclear and confusing.At the center of getting a sound overview of practice\, and understanding how the many pieces of practice fit together in one\, cohesive whole\, is the principle of discovery. It is the center piece around which all elements of practice revolve.The talk and discussion this evening will focus on this important principle and the role it plays in meditation\, daily life\, and relationships.The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice.
