SUMMARY:(Remote) 2020 SIM Annual Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM)\n15th Annual Retreat\n“Keeping our Footing on Unsteady Ground”\nThis is a five day\, online Zoom event with Senior Teacher John Travis\n(Friday\, September 11th at approximately 6 pm through Wednesday\, September 16th by 11 am)\nResidential retreat is widely viewed in the Theravada tradition as an important\, if not essential\, component in the path towards awakening. Residential meditation practice provides an environment that helps us turn inward towards a way of being where we live and act from a place of stillness\, satisfaction\, and kindness. This retreat is designed to deepen practice skills and foster insights into the stages of awakening and their implications for daily life. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nIt is rare for a community sangha to sponsor a regular residential retreat and this year’s retreat will be unusual because we’ll have it online via Zoom. Practicing online together for multiple days\, our individual efforts join together into a powerful force to deepen our practice\, integrate it into our daily lives in our home environment\, and strengthen our connections as a community. This year there will be two options for attending this retreat. See Participation and Registration sections below. \nWhile this retreat is appropriate for both experienced and less experienced meditators\, we encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\nDo  you have a regular practice?\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\nHave you sat at a multi-day retreat before?\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact the retreat registrar for advise. \nOur retreat teacher this year will be John Travis. \nJohn Travis is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working. \nParticipation\nThis retreat is designed to support those who are able to make this a full-time at home self-retreat\, as well as those who may need to work\, care for family members or do other daily life activities during parts of the rest of their day/evening.\nEveryone is strongly encouraged to attend the 3-4 sessions each day with the Teacher. To view the current retreat schedule\, click here. Full participants will also have one small group check-in with the Teacher. \nFor those with uncertain work or travel schedules\, there are a limited number of spaces available to audit the retreat. Auditing does not include the small group check-in with the Teacher. If you require this accommodation\, select the Ticket option “Auditing“. \nCost\nThe registration fee will be $100 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the teacher\, John Travis. \n \nRegistration\nNote: If this retreat is full (you’ll see a message SOLD OUT)\, there’s a good chance you may still be able to attend since people’s plans change and there will likely be some cancellations. Proceed with the registration process to add your name to the wait list and as soon as a spot is open\, we’ll notify you.  If you don’t get into the retreat\, we’ll refund your deposit. Expect us to contact you on or before Friday\, Aug 24\, 2020 with an update about your wait list status. \nBefore registering to this event\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \nYou may pay online or by check as follows: \nOnline Registration\nRegistration payments done online will automatically add your name to the registration or wait list. If you’re paying for more than one person\, SIM will confirm everyone’s name and email address at a later date.\nTo pay the registration fee online\, use the “Tickets” section at the bottom of this page. Specify the number of people you are registering to this retreat and click the button “Get Tickets”. You’ll be automatically directed to a secure web-page where your registration payment can be made by credit card as a guest (no PayPal account required) or payment can be made by PayPal after you sign-in to your PayPal account if you have one. \nPostal Registration\nIf you plan to pay the registration fee by mail\, you must add your name to the RSVP list to secure your spot in the registration queue. SUMMARY:(Remote) *Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta Bhikkhuni and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with Ayya Santacitta Bhikkhuni and Rev. Diane Wilde\nRetreat theme: What I have learned from my teachers\nLessons come from our cherished teachers as well as from lesser known beings throughout our lives. Paying attention and incorporating these teachings can change the trajectory of our lives from self-absorption towards more happiness and freedom. How do we do that? Which lessons are most pertinent to our own lives? \nAyya Santacitta — in her thirty years as Buddhist monastic — has benefited from some of the great teachers of our time\, in both Theravada and Vajrayana traditions. They include Ajahn Buddhadasa\, Ajahn Sumedho\, Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche\, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo\, Bhikkhu Analayo and others. Diane Wilde has gained lessons from her years as an activist\, both for prison reform and the environment\, as well as a chaplain for many individuals as they died. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. SUMMARY:(Cancelled) Half day Retreat - Diane Wilde- Revolution of Mind
DESCRIPTION:An Online\, Half-day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThis retreat is cancelled.\nIt’s a Revolution of the Mind!\nA revolution is taking place in our own minds just as it is taking place in society. The amount of anxiety\, concern\, and fear is beyond anything we have seen before. For many of us\, these past few months in quarantine have opened up our minds to mental experiences which are new to us. Fear of the unknown\, fear of sickness\, fear of societal upheaval. Yet contemporary scientists/neurologists as well as the Buddha\, have said that the mind is capable of contending with these unprecedented times. We’ll practice together and investigate relevant Buddhist teachings as well as neurological studies and techniques for uprooting anxiety and stress. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Awareness Practice and Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Awareness Practice and Inquiry\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n“Awareness knows” says Burmese monk and meditation teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya. Sounds simple – is it? With all the approaches to mindfulness floating around\, it may be a challenge to know how to practice a simple yet effective form of awareness that leads to insight and eventually freedom. Let’s spend a day of practice and inquiry into the nature\, feeling\, and function of awareness. With reminders from Sayadaw’s two most recent books\, “Collecting Gold Dust” and “Relax and Be Aware” as support\, we will practice sitting\, standing\, and walking meditation\, with some guided meditations. There will also be periods for questions and answers. The day will otherwise be held in noble silence. Bring a lunch and plan to spend all day on site to support continuity of awareness. Copies of Sayadaw U Tejaniya’s book “Dhamma Everywhere” will be offered to the first 20 people who register. \n\nEvent Flyer (.PDF)\n\nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Tangled in Thought
DESCRIPTION:Tangled in Thought  –  How to beat your mind at its own game\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde \nSome new practical ideas will be offered at this daylong and there will be a writing/observation exercise. Please bring paper and pen. \nIt’s the New Year\, the first retreat of 2020\, and perhaps we made the resolution that this is the year where we are really going to develop a meaningful meditation practice. \nFor many of us\, the challenge for developing an ongoing meditation practice is the inability to let go of thought. Memories\, plans\, past and future… all seem to take us away from that perceived “blissful state” we long for. The good news is that we can actually work with the thinking process and incorporate it into our meditation practice. We will discuss our practice as well as practical strategies for working with ‘thinking” on January 25. Please bring your lunch. \n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Exploring Realistic Standards
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Realistic Standards for Community Practice\nComparing Monastic & Community Level Practice\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe historical Buddha created different models of practice. One for monastics – nuns and monks – and another for community level practitioners with families whose lives are filled with obligations and responsibilities.\nThe practice approach we’re developing here in the West is an attempt to blend these two models. We are studying and practicing from teachings that were\, for the most part\, intended for monastics. These individuals were engaged in intense\, deep and sophisticated practices in protected environments shielded from most of the pressures\, stresses and responsibilities each of us routinely face every day. The monastic model\, as well\, did not involve responsibility for addressing the real-life social\, economic\, family and political conditions that contribute so substantially to the stress of community level practitioners.\nThis one-day retreat will examine the different models of practice offered by the historical Buddha. It will explore questions about\, and the implications of\, our attempt to blend them into a new western model. Our goal for the day will be a relaxed discussion that will help each of us establish realistic standards for our individual practices informed by historical context.\nDennis will also discuss a new 2020 SIM course entitled “Living and Practicing on the Other Side of Suffering” that is directly related to issues that will be raised during this one-day. \n\nRetreat flyer (.PDF)\n\nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM) hosts a community potluck during the holidays. This event is open to the general dharma community. \nSavory or Sweet\, bring a dish to share (6-8 Servings). In SIM’s tradition please bring your own plate\, cup\, utensils and as we attempt to go paperless\, cloth napkins. Again this year we will need a few people to bring table cloth(s) and holiday decor! We will be setting up our Holiday Feast starting from 6:30 PM\, and planning to eat at 7:00 PM. \n  \nA Unique Opportunity to Visit and Share\nAll are invited to come celebrate the holidays with our sangha\, as we eat together and enjoy each other’s company. Come and visit with your SIM friends\, acquaintances and dharma communities. This evening is a fun and joyful way for us to spend time getting to know one another better. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. \nThis evening will be what we make of it. \nThere will not be a Dharma talk. Instead\, as we’ve done in years past\, people are invited to share of themselves. We all have something to give – our personal dana – a poem\, a reading\, a story\, a song\, a dance\, a picture – whatever comes from the heart\, in the spirit of the holidays. It does not have to be original. For sharing your personal dana\, be mindful of the time\, 4-6 minutes\, so that everyone who wants to can have the opportunity to participate. To sign up for sharing your personal dana\, simply RSVP in the section shown below selecting the option “Potluck plus Sharing”. \nIf you have questions about the “talent”/dharma sharing part of the evening\, contact Miriam Greenberg.\nYou can also contact Barbara Colton for help with anything else. \nTell us if you’re Going or Not Going / Sharing or Not Sharing\nYour RSVP to this Community Potluck is requested as it will help us estimate the number of tables and chairs we’ll be setting up and help us organize the agenda for the event. At the bottom of this web page\, enter the number of people planning to attend\, select the appropriate Confirm RSVP button\, enter your Full Name\, your Email\, and your RSVP as “Going” or “Not Going”.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Greg Scharf - Mindfulness of Mind
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness of Mind\nSit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Senior Teacher Greg Scharf\nThis talk will explore the nature of mind and will look at the Buddha’s instructions in the Third Establishment of Mindfulness in the Satipatthana Sutta. \nThe Satipatthana Sutta is one of the most revered teachings in the Pali Canon and forms the Buddha’s single most comprehensive set of instructions for Vipassana Meditation. In the 3rd section of this discourse\, Mindfulness of Mind\, the Buddha describes simple but extremely powerful & liberating ways to bring awareness to the mind in meditation. This talk explores our direct experience of the mind as process\, as well as offering reflections for the practical application of the Buddha’s instructions in this core teaching. \n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf)\n\n \nGreg Scharf\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.
