If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and 75% of your donation will be shared with Rev. Diane Wilde. \nTopic details:\nThe vast majority of us\, if we are at all concerned about our planet\, are suffering from “climate anxiety”\, a new mental phenomena that is now recognized by psychotherapists. We have good reason for having anxiety\, especially those of us living in California. Fires\, drought and daily reminders of our tenuous environmental situation causes two different responses: to completely ignore the situation or succumb to nihilism. Neither of these responses is helpful for the earth or the individual. Our Buddhist practice sheds much needed light on how we move forward in these challenging times.

SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Finding the Right Question
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\n“Finding the Right Question”\nOur search for liberation\, awakening\, liberation\, release from suffering… whatever you wish to call it\, means asking ourselves questions that get to the heart of our unease. Not an easy task when our identities\, reactivity\, judgement and life experiences obscure insight. Finding the right question and being willing to spend time with it in daily life and on the cushion is crucial for getting closer to the goal of our practice… awakening. Not an easy task due to denial and fear of what we might find out about ourselves and our views of others. \nWe will reflect on a variety of questions during this daylong. We will use guided meditation and investigation of our lives through queries and personal written reflections. The simple act of writing has the power to help us encode information and insights. \nBring a small notebook or a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil. \nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren (Re-Entry)
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRe-Entry – Maybe a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity\nCalling the process we are all beginning “Re-entry” is misleading. It implies that we are stepping back into what existed before. That isn’t true… psychologically\, emotionally or physically. The pandemic has had us all in a restricted bubble. We have changed\, whether we recognize it or not. The same is true for everyone else. The world is a different place. We are all a little different.\nComing out of this bubble in an awake\, alive and mindful way potentially represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to see\, understand and relate to ourselves\, to others and the world around us in a different\, fresh\, more expansive and healthier way.\nLouis Pasteur was the French chemist and microbiologist whose discoveries relating to vaccination and pasteurization influence our lives to this day. He was fond of saying that “chance favors the prepared mind\,” by which he meant trial\, error\, adaptation and growth. This was also the position of the Historical Buddha – “I know of no other single thing so conducive to satisfaction and happiness than a well-trained mind.”\nDuring this one-day retreat\, we’ll look at the dynamics influencing our re-entry. We’ll reflect on how we can prepare ourselves – intentionally and purposefully – to be more open\, inclusive\, accepting and kind with ourselves and with the host of challenges that await us in 2021 and 2022.\n(Pre-registration is required.) \n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Suffering Well
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe Experience and Possibilities of “Suffering Well”\nWe study\, read books\, listen to talks and discuss what it means to practice well and to live well. Learning how to suffer well is a third foundational contemplative and meditative skill. We don’t look at that so often. It may be a foreign idea or counter-intuitive for many of us.\nWhat does it mean to “suffer well”? What is the experience and feeling in the body\, in the mind and in the heart? How does suffering well express itself in our thoughts\, actions and speech? How does it support practicing and living well.\nWe are in a period of enormous transition as a world\, as a culture\, as families\, as individuals\, as spiritual beings. This means lots of suffering – uncertainty\, confusion\, ambiguity\, doubt\, anxiousness\, maybe worse – and significant possibilities. How can understanding and developing the skill of suffering well serve us during this period of change. How can it open up new possibilities for us as practitioners\, in relationships\, and in our understanding what it means to be alive and human on this planet at this moment in history.\nThese are the themes\, and practices which support them\, we’ll explore during this one-day retreat. \n(Pre-registration is required.) \nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Resting in Awareness - At Home
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nResting in Awareness – At Home\nAwareness is always accessible\, and it does not require special effort. As contemporary Burmese teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya says\, “Everything you need for understanding to arise is surrounding you in this moment. With the pandemic limiting our opportunities to practice at retreat centers\, it is more important than ever to remember to bring awareness into all activities.\nIn this simple day of practice\, we will practice sitting\, walking\, and standing meditation wherever we are. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Working with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\nWorking with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit\nConceit (“māna” in Pali) is one of the last defilements\, and the most subtle process to fall away as we begin“waking up”. It is much more than a feeling of superiority\, although that is certainly one aspect. Conceit in Buddhism can mean feeling superior\, inferior\, or the same as others. In this daylong retreat\, we will look more deeply at its subtlety through the use meditation\, “thought experiments” as well as informative daily experiences. We may begin to see how deeply integrated conceit is in all of our judgements of ourselves and others. The amount of suffering in our lives is in direct proportion to our inner conceit.\nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat with Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\nDeath as a Teacher\nJust as life is happening all around us\, so is death. Human beings appear to be the only species that are conscious of our mortality. Yet most people ignore this fact of our existence\, preferring to put efforts\, thoughts and practice on “more pleasant things”. We want to “wake up”\, let go of our endless attachments\, and experience contentment and ease in our lives just as they are. Paradoxically\, facing our inevitable deaths is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and genuinely waking up to our lives.\nThe daylong will consist of two talks\, guided meditations and practices for our everyday lives.\nThis particular topic may not be suitable for everyone.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
