SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Is your meditation “working?”
DESCRIPTION:Is your meditation “working?”\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde (click here for biographical details)\n\n\n\nIs your meditation “working?”For a new practitioner as well as a person who has been meditating for some time\, it’s important to periodically evaluate our meditation practice. Perhaps you have fallen into a practice that has become as “habitual” as many other facets of your life. Or perhaps you have stopped your meditation practice altogether. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate the state of your practice through questions such as: Is this the right practice for me? Is the same practice suitable for everyone? Should I adjust my practice periodically? Has my practice lost its “juice” and how do I get it back? Sometimes a minor adjustment makes all the difference and other times an entirely different approach is needed. We will spend the day investigating our practice as well as taking part in a discussion about what each of us individually need to do to allow insight to arise. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to stay for the entire day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Other participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. We encourage everyone to attend in-person since that group experience can be so meaningful.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. Since your registration choice indicates if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person\, registering early helps us determine how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n\n\n\nAfter you’ve registered you may later offer a donation in gratitude of the teacher. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. To make a donation for this event using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n06/25/2023 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n07/29/2023 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n07/03/2023 – Online registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rick Maddock - How feelings shape experience: Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:How pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism\n\n\n\n(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Rick Maddock\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\nHow pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism. The five aggregates (skandhas) together encompass all aspects of experience. Vedanā is one of the aggregates and is often defined as the feeling tone of experience ranging along a continuum from pleasant\, through neutral\, to unpleasant. The Buddha attributed great importance to mindfulness and clear comprehension of Vedanā. It is the focus of the second establishment of mindfulness in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. We will discuss the nature of Vedanā and its relationship with the other aggregates using language and perspectives from both early Buddhism and modern neuroscience. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”40088″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\nRICK MADDOCK\, MD\, is a professor of psychiatry who teaches and conducts neuroscience research at the UC Davis School of Medicine. A long-time dharma practitioner with a focus on the teachings of early Indian Buddhism\, Rick has completed Spirit Rock’s training programs for senior students and teaches dharma in the Sacramento area and Sierra foothills. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Truthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and Profound
DESCRIPTION:Truthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and Profound\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center\n\n\n\nTruthfulness: Precept\, Parami\, and ProfoundA commitment to speaking the truth brings a sense of trust and safety to our relationships\, and we reinforce this commitment when we take the fourth precept of refraining from harmful speech. Truthfulness (sacca in Pali) is also one of the Paramis\, and it is said that this commitment to speak the truth was never broken by the Buddha on his way to awakening. As the same time\, we are surrounded by a society which seems to thrive on untruthful\, deceptive\, or exaggerated communication. On this evening\, we will look at various aspects of Truth in the Buddhist teachings\, up to the profound Four Noble Truths\, and explore how we can incorporate a commitment to truthfulness in our daily lives. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting:  https://us06web.zoom.us/join ( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886) Passcode: 843332For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Revisiting Fundamentals: The Meaning of 'The Middle Way'
DESCRIPTION:Talk Topic: Revisiting Fundamentals: The Meaning of “The Middle Way”\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren.\n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. The teacher plans to present via Zoom.\n\n\n\nThe Historical Buddha explicitly described the three trainings of the Eight-Fold Path as “the Middle Way.” At first glance\, this description seems to provide a clear and tangible guide to evaluating elements of practice: What practice represents the middle point between extremes? \n\n\n\nIs this what is meant by this teaching? Is it that simple? What standard would we use to make this seemly straight-forward evaluation? Or is there something more? How does the notion of “the Middle Way” fit into the Buddha’s finely woven net of teachings\, psychology\, methods and values. \n\n\n\nDuring this evening we’ll examine the historical factors that led to this teaching. The context in which it was first introduced. And practical and powerful applications which provide a more expansive basis for understanding the role of the Middle Way in practice and life. The subject matter of this evening is appropriate for all stages of practice. \n\n\n\nThursday Night Talk Dana[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical BuddhaYou may use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - The Paradox of Shame
DESCRIPTION:Talk topic: The Paradox of Shame\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\n\n\n\n* Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. The teacher plans to attend in-person.\n\n\n\nWe all experience shame.  It is a universal emotion with some social scientists and psychologists saying it is an innate human trait\, and others insisting it evolved within our social fabric. It is considered an absolutely essential emotion in some societies\, and yet\, is also frequently considered mentally damaging. The causes of shame have dramatically changed\, from lack of adherence to prescriptive social mores of the past\, to shaming of individuals on social media today. The Buddha also taught about shame (hiri) and its companion\, the dread of shame (ottapa). Shame and the reasons for shame as taught by the Buddha are quite different then the “shaming” we experience in contemporary society. We will discuss this complex emotion\, its history and why it is an important\, yet often overlooked Buddhist teaching. \n\n\n\nThursday Night Talk Dana[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] “Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical BuddhaPlease use the form above to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life.
