In the West\, we refer to Vipassana meditation as “Insight Meditation” because it produces Insight – a spontaneous\, sudden change in how we understand ourselves and the world based on direct experience. During this evening we’ll explore the nature of the Insight experience and the difference in Insight which cognitive and that based on direct experience. Some gradual. Some big. Some\, at least initially\, small. Changes in relationships\, finances\, jobs\, living circumstances. Changes in capacity – mental\, emotional\, physical. Changes in health and quality of life. Changes in ourselves\, in those we know\, in the world as we have known it. \n\n\n\nOur actual experience of change frequently catches us off guard even when the change itself is anticipated. We feel unprepared\, disoriented\, disorganized. Buddhist practices offer the possibility of being prepared for change\, even when we have no idea what it will be. They offer the possibility of experiencing change as possibility\, rather than primarily as obstacle or problem. \n\n\n\nThis day will explore Buddhist perspectives\, tools and practices that help us work with change large and small. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talk\, and small and large group discussions. \n\n\n\nThe day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. We may even be facing periods of boredom. Or we may have children who are BORED!! Dr. Katie Hurley (Happy Kid Handbook) says\, “We have a tendency to treat boredom as a sign of distress\, or a sort of call for help. It is uncomfortable\, but it’s not necessarily negative.” Like any hindrance (restlessness\, sleepiness\, etc.)\, we can take up boredom as an object of awareness\, and by learning about an apparently negative mind state\, learn about ourselves and our suffering. On a meditation retreat\, John Travis has recommended looking closely at boredom. What might we find? They just seem to be “us”\, who we are. Even though they are almost always “invisible”\, you can count on experiencing their results… anxiety and more anxiety! The Buddha describes these troubling subtle states of mind as the Ten Fetters. He offers an approach\, a sort of “To-Do List” on how to mentally address the Fetters\, and what happens when we undertake the process of recognizing them. Tonight we will do a brief overview of the Ten Fetters and their unique properties. We’ll spend additional time on the first fetter\, which is the illusion we each have concerning our own personality\, or “personality view”. Living into this way of mindful awareness has been likened to walking on a path. Where are you on the path? Is meditation an occasional hobby or a daily necessity? Does your practice include generosity and ethical behavior or do those qualities raise your hackles as “too religious?” What about cultivating other qualities like patience\, renunciation\, truthfulness\, kindness and equanimity (collectively known as the “paramis”). Wherever you are on the path\, you are welcome at SIM. And\, we encourage you to reflect on your practice(s) and living in harmony with your highest values. One aspect of insight meditation practice that we are gently cultivating is what we call concentration\, or samadhi in Pali.
