SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Tangled in Thought
DESCRIPTION:Tangled in Thought  –  How to beat your mind at its own game\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde \nSome new practical ideas will be offered at this daylong and there will be a writing/observation exercise. Please bring paper and pen. \nIt’s the New Year\, the first retreat of 2020\, and perhaps we made the resolution that this is the year where we are really going to develop a meaningful meditation practice. \nFor many of us\, the challenge for developing an ongoing meditation practice is the inability to let go of thought. Memories\, plans\, past and future… all seem to take us away from that perceived “blissful state” we long for. The good news is that we can actually work with the thinking process and incorporate it into our meditation practice. We will discuss our practice as well as practical strategies for working with ‘thinking” on January 25. Please bring your lunch. \n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. If you prefer to make a donation for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n11/19/2019 – Registration opens.\n01/24/2020 – Registration via this website will close at 3:00 pm however you may register in person at least 15 minutes before the retreat begins. \n01/25/2010 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. If you are able and interested in further supporting SIM financially\, you have the option of a registration fee of either $25 or $35 dollars. To pay the registration fee online\, use the “Tickets” section at the bottom of this page. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Exploring Realistic Standards
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Realistic Standards for Community Practice\nComparing Monastic & Community Level Practice\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe historical Buddha created different models of practice. One for monastics – nuns and monks – and another for community level practitioners with families whose lives are filled with obligations and responsibilities.\nThe practice approach we’re developing here in the West is an attempt to blend these two models. We are studying and practicing from teachings that were\, for the most part\, intended for monastics. These individuals were engaged in intense\, deep and sophisticated practices in protected environments shielded from most of the pressures\, stresses and responsibilities each of us routinely face every day. The monastic model\, as well\, did not involve responsibility for addressing the real-life social\, economic\, family and political conditions that contribute so substantially to the stress of community level practitioners.\nThis one-day retreat will examine the different models of practice offered by the historical Buddha. It will explore questions about\, and the implications of\, our attempt to blend them into a new western model. Our goal for the day will be a relaxed discussion that will help each of us establish realistic standards for our individual practices informed by historical context.\nDennis will also discuss a new 2020 SIM course entitled “Living and Practicing on the Other Side of Suffering” that is directly related to issues that will be raised during this one-day. \n\nRetreat flyer (.PDF)\n\nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher\, Professional Level (CMT-P)\, by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/ .\nDennis has been participating in residential meditation retreats\, and has maintained a daily meditation practice\, in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. 2018 was his 20th year of teaching Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential\, retreat\, educational\, medical\, corporate and community settings. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:SIM Community Potluck (Full Moon)
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM) hosts a community potluck during the holidays. This event is open to the general dharma community. \nSavory or Sweet\, bring a dish to share (6-8 Servings). In SIM’s tradition please bring your own plate\, cup\, utensils and as we attempt to go paperless\, cloth napkins. Again this year we will need a few people to bring table cloth(s) and holiday decor! We will be setting up our Holiday Feast starting from 6:30 PM\, and planning to eat at 7:00 PM. \n  \nA Unique Opportunity to Visit and Share\nAll are invited to come celebrate the holidays with our sangha\, as we eat together and enjoy each other’s company. Come and visit with your SIM friends\, acquaintances and dharma communities. This evening is a fun and joyful way for us to spend time getting to know one another better. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. \nThis evening will be what we make of it. \nThere will not be a Dharma talk. Instead\, as we’ve done in years past\, people are invited to share of themselves. We all have something to give – our personal dana – a poem\, a reading\, a story\, a song\, a dance\, a picture – whatever comes from the heart\, in the spirit of the holidays. It does not have to be original. For sharing your personal dana\, be mindful of the time\, 4-6 minutes\, so that everyone who wants to can have the opportunity to participate. To sign up for sharing your personal dana\, simply RSVP in the section shown below selecting the option “Potluck plus Sharing”. \nIf you have questions about the “talent”/dharma sharing part of the evening\, contact Miriam Greenberg.\nYou can also contact Barbara Colton for help with anything else. \nTell us if you’re Going or Not Going / Sharing or Not Sharing\nYour RSVP to this Community Potluck is requested as it will help us estimate the number of tables and chairs we’ll be setting up and help us organize the agenda for the event. At the bottom of this web page\, enter the number of people planning to attend\, select the appropriate Confirm RSVP button\, enter your Full Name\, your Email\, and your RSVP as “Going” or “Not Going”.

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of “Framing Experience” In Performance\, Satisfaction and Happiness\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nEvery day we are presented with circumstances that can be opportunities\, challenges or problems depending on how our mind frames the experience that is taking place. The way our mind frames an experience has enormous influence in determining how we feel about our capacity to deal with a set of facts skillfully and how we perform.\nThis event – how the mind frames what is it about to engage – is critical in guiding how\, and whether\, we can mobilize our inner resources to take on what life brings to us with determination\, patience and satisfaction; or whether we struggle\, suffer and are disappointed. This is the difference between feeling empowered and capable vs vulnerable and at risk.\nThis principle applies whether the circumstances\, or life situation\, involves our interior life\, our relationship with others\, or economic\, cultural or political events taking place in our community\, our country or the work.\nThis one day will look at ways we can use the framing process as a practical\, hand-on tool. We will examine the what\, why and how of framing events from a practice perspective using real life illustrations. We will explore how we can use our practice to improve the fundamental way we relate to our experience\, improve our performance and feel better about ourselves? This will include Dennis sharing some of his recent experiences in dealing with medical challenges\, pain and other significant life situations.\nPlease try to attend Dennis’ talk on Thursday\, September 26 if you plan on attending this one-day retreat. That talk will lay a helpful foundation for your experience of the one-day retreat. \nAll are welcome. Come for all day or for a portion of the day. Please bring your lunch. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:A One Day Retreat– with Ayya Santacitta and SIM’s Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThe Buddha’s advise on what is insanity and how to cultivate a sound mind\nWe human beings\, in this human realm\, rarely realize that we operating in a state of of delusion. Not only are we operating in a deluded state\, we expect this current mind state to provide us a sense of happiness and well-being. Because we really have no idea what we are doing\, the goal of happiness is illusive and frustrating. This is also the Buddhist view of mental disease. Delusion is a mental illness that causes all sorts of suffering; mental health can be restored by correcting the flaws in how the mind operates. We will investigate our “mental disease” in both classical terms as well as our contemporary daily life and how we can cultivate “sanity” both for ourselves and the larger world itself. \nPlease bring a meal to share with others which includes a lunch offering to Ayya Santacitta. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - a Sutta Study Day
DESCRIPTION:The Life and Teachings of the Buddha – a Sutta Study Day\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf format)\n\nThe study of the original texts is considered an important complement to our meditation\, reflection\, and daily life practices\, and it has been a while since we offered a sutta study day at SIM. Each participant in this daylong class will receive a booklet called “The Life and Teachings of the Buddha: An Introductory Sutta Study Guide\,” written by former SIM Community Mentor Dr. Jeff Hardin\, provided with Jeff’s permission and through his generosity. Jeff has sent us 30 copies of the third edition\, so it is especially important to register in advance to ensure that we have enough copies for everyone*. We will use the booklet to move through an introduction to the Pali canon and its historical context\, the life of the Buddha\, the first two discourses of the Buddha (which include the Four Noble Truths and the Five Aggregates)\, and some of the other fundamental teachings of our tradition such as the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and Dependent Origination. Our purpose is best expressed by these words from Jeff’s Introduction: Ultimately\, it is my wish that the study of these teachings be not solely an academic exercise\, but rather that they be investigated\, reflected upon\, meditated with and put into practice within one’s life with the intention of assisting all living beings to awaken to a life free from suffering. \nThere will be some sitting and walking practice\, but this will primarily be a study day. Bring a lunch and plan to stay on site all day. \n* [The second edition of the booklet is available as a pdf through the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at this link: https://media.audiodharma.org/documents/Sutta-Study-Guide.pdf (please consider offering dana to the Sati Center if you download it).] \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. He is currently enrolled in Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Walt Opie - Cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening\nA One Day Retreat with visiting Teacher Walt Opie\nAccording to Ven. Analayo\, the seven awakening factors provide the conditions conducive to awakening. These factors require a sequential building up as well as a balancing in our meditation practice. And when we do this\, as Ven. Analayo says\, “Just as a river inclines and flows towards the ocean\, so the awakening factors incline towards Nibbana.” \nWe will spend this day of practice exploring these seven important factors in depth and looking at how they build upon each other sequentially. The first factor is mindfulness (sati)\, so we will examine how one firmly establishes mindfulness\, which the Buddha stated is always useful\, in every situation. \nWalt recently completed a retreat with Ven. Analayo and will offer lessons learned both on retreat and in further study of the teachings on the seven factors. There will be sitting and walking meditation periods with guided instructions\, along with dharma talks and time for questions and discussion. \nAll are welcome. Come for all day or for a portion of the day. Please bring your lunch. \nWALT OPIE was first introduced to insight meditation in 1993 at Spirit Rock and began attending regular residential retreats in 2005. He is a graduate of both the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders’ (CDL4) training program and the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy program. He has led sitting groups for people in recovery since 2011. Walt also serves as a volunteer chaplain with Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) at Solano state prison in Vacaville\, CA. In addition\, he is currently a trainee in the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) Teacher Training program based in Barre\, MA. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
