SUMMARY:7-Night Residential Retreat with Greg Scharf
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat with Greg Scharf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: Finding a True Refuge\n\n\n\nIn a world of change and unpredictability\, in times that often feel chaotic and confusing\, where do we look for ease and security? Often\, in our search for a dependable refuge\, we mistakenly turn to that which is essentially unreliable and unable to provide the stability we seek. \n\n\n\nInsight (or Vipassana) meditation is the simple\, direct observation of the mind/body process with relaxed\, open and careful attention. As we connect with our experience from a place of spacious stillness and steadiness\, we learn to meet the changing conditions we encounter with greater ease and balance of mind. As our understanding deepens\, equanimity in the face of change grows\, and we discover a refuge that is to a great extent independent of life’s changing conditions. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike and will include meditation instruction\, Dharma talks\, practice meetings with the teacher\, and optional mindful movement. A Meditation retreat is a rare opportunity to take time away from our usual activities for the express purpose of turning inward in order to deepen our understanding of what it actually means to be human. Time on retreat connects us with what we truly value in life and gives us the time & space to deepen our understanding of who & what we really are. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration (Closed)\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 27 registrants. Beginning Saturday\, September 9\, this webpage will accept online registration payments. Before making any payment\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so. If needed\, contact the retreat registrar with your request to pay a 50% deposit. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n\n\nThanks for Attending the Retreat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudio Recordings\n\n\n\nFor a limited time\, talks and meditations recorded during the retreat are available to everyone that attended. To access the audio files\, click here. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of potentially challenging times\, partial scholarships might be available if needed. To request a partial scholarship\, pay a $225 deposit fee after registration opens and before September 30th. Then watch for a follow-up email from the retreat registrar. SIM has a limited number of partial scholarships available based on need. If the $225 deposit payment is currently not possible\, contact the retreat registrar to apply for a scholarship with other options. \n\n\n\nScholarship Donations\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to contribute into the scholarship fund to help someone else be able to afford this special dharma opportunity\, enter the amount you’d like to donate in the DONATE NOW box. Donating into the fund won’t register you for the retreat. \n\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”25463″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\nCancellations\n\n\n\n\nThrough September 30th\, full refund if requested by this date if someone on the waiting list takes the reservation.\n\n\n\nOn or after October 15th\, deposit will be retained by SIM. Balance may be refundable if the spot is filled by a wait-listed person. Otherwise\, the balance will not be refunded. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on a request demonstrating financial hardship.\n\n\n\n\nSchedule – Summary of Dates\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Registration opens; online payments accepted.\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request full refund (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request a scholarship (see scholarship details listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Last day to request refund of balance paid (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Registration payment in full due.\n\n\n\nTBD – Registration closes\, date to be announced.\n\n\n\nNovember 12 – The retreat begins (check-in starts at 3:30 PM).\n\n\n\nNovember 19 – The retreat ends (check-out at 11:00 AM).\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nOur priority is to protect the wellbeing of everyone who attends the SIM Annual Retreat. The SIM Board will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and required and recommended safety measures from federal\, State and local health agencies\, and the Mercy Center\, with consideration of our Sangha demographics. \n\n\n\nAt a minimum\, we will require proof of vaccinations and boosters (if eligible) for COVID-19 at least two weeks before the retreat\, along with proof of COVID rapid testing within 24 hours prior to attending and a second rapid test two days into the retreat (SIM will provide tests if needed). \n\n\n\nAdditional protocols will very likely include masking when indoors with others\, and social distancing as space allows. \n\n\n\nSIM will update the protocols to reflect the situation in the summer. \n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here.

To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: What is Samma Samadhi/Skillful Concentration?\n\n\n\nRight or Skillful Concentration (samma samadhi) is the last of the Noble Eightfold Path. It can be a very confusing topic. Samadhi is often defined as attaining a state of mind called jhana which means “absorption.” This definition of jhana refers to a mind completely absorbed in concentration. Other interpretations of samadhi ignore jhana completely\, and focus on “insight” or vipassana as all that is needed to “wake up.” Others counter that the development of jhana is crucial for the development of insight. Who is correct? \n\n\n\nIn this daylong\, we’ll discuss the range of teachings in the Pali tradition on the relationship between samadhi\, jhana and insight. We’ll look at controversies that have developed about the interpretations of samadhi and how ultimately\, these various definitions can actually be quite useful as we individually learn what practice works for each of us. \n\n\n\nThe day will be in silence.  Please bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n09/11/2023 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n10/28/2023 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n10/30/2023 – Online registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Be Your Own Teacher
DESCRIPTION:Be Your Own Teacher\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nBe Your Own Teacher“Be a lamp unto yourselves and strive forward with diligence” is one of the translations of the last words the Buddha uttered to his grieving disciples as he achieved paranibbana\, or complete liberation. He left no heirs — no recommended teachers\, but rather advised those gathered around him to depend on the Dhamma itself.  He left us with a detailed path which alleviates much suffering and unhappiness in our lives. The challenge is\, how do we each individually stay on the path?  Have we incorporated these essential teachings into our daily life?  If we have\, how do we do it?  If not\, why? Tonight we’ll discuss a few “prompts” that may be useful as a guide while navigating the path the Buddha outlined\, in both daily life and on the cushion.  \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 862 2575 6048 and Passcode: 302015 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Noting and Naming
DESCRIPTION:Noting and Naming\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nNoting & Naming“Noting” or “Naming” is the practice of making a soft mental note to highlight the present experience that is unfolding in meditation or in daily life. It has a number of different purposes and uses. Among others\, it can interrupt the distorting grip of reactivity\, reframe present moment experiences\, and create a new context for working with events\, particularly difficult or challenging ones. \n\n\n\nNoting/Naming is frequently misunderstood or undervalued even though it has the potential to be one of the most helpful\, practical\, and powerful tools of practice available to us.  \n\n\n\nThis evening we look at the different purposes and applications of the Noting/Naming process through practical illustrations of common situations in meditation and everyday situation. We will also place the practice into the larger framework of Buddhist psychology\, teachings\, and methods. \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 862 2575 6048 and Passcode: 302015 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Revisiting Fundamentals: Energy & Effort
DESCRIPTION:Revisiting Fundamentals: Energy & Effort\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nRevisiting Fundamentals: Energy & EffortEnergy and Effort are essential\, and interdependent\, elements of good meditation and daily living practice. They can be valuable tools for keeping the mind alert\, focused and curious if we understand the difference between the two\, and develop the ability to monitor and regulate both. And they can become confusing and disrupting aspects of practice if we don’t.This evening we look at a framework for skillfully working with Energy and Effort using common situations in meditation\, daily living\, and relationships – becoming drowsy during meditation\, losing focus of attention\, being unable to sustain relaxed awareness\, getting lost in thought or narratives. The evening will also explore a practice approach using Energy as the primary focus of attention and exploration. Experientially understanding thought\, emotions\, and actions as fundamental expressions of different types of energy can be a door way to immediate\, direct experience and insight. The subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886 and Passcode: 843332 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

The foundational teaching of Dependent Origination is the best-known example. But causes and conditions can also lead to liberation. The lesser-known Discourse on Proximate Causes (Upanisa Sutta\, Samyutta Nikaya 12.23) lays out a chain of causes that leads from suffering to the knowledge of liberation.Understanding the steps in this chain of liberation can inform our practice and lead to happiness and peace. We will examine these steps and see how we might apply them to our practice. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886 and Passcode: 843332 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

This talk will focus on its meaning as one of the five aggregates (skandhas)\, where it is often translated with such terms as volitions and intentions. People often strongly identify with their volitions and intentions. The Buddha taught about the dangers of clinging to and identifying with sankharas. The Foam Sutta describes sankhara with the analogy of a carpenter in need of heartwood who goes to a forest and cuts down a plantain tree. But when he cuts into the tree trunk\, he finds it is only layers of sheaths. There is no heartwood there. The perspective of modern neuroscience leads to a similar understanding of volition and intentions. \n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”40088″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\nRICK MADDOCK\, MD\, is a professor of psychiatry who teaches and conducts neuroscience research at the UC Davis School of Medicine. Why does facing serious difficulties result in some becoming stronger and more resilient\, while seeming to break others?Revolve or Determination is considered a pivotal skill in Buddhism. It implements and facilitates Intention and Aspiration. That’s what make it a Parami\, a special quality of mind essential to deepening and maturing our meditation practice\, as well as living a full and satisfying life. It is an elemental tool in working with difficulty\, challenge\, confusion\, and doubt. \n\n\n\nDennis encourages you to watch a two-minute video entitled “Movements as Your Teacher Not as Taskmaster” by Ido Portal in preparation for this Thursday evening. DESCRIPTION:The Benefits and the Challenges of Being in Community\n\n\n\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details about the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nThe Benefits and the Challenges of Being in CommunityAs a Buddhist community\, we take refuge in the triple gem: the Buddha\, the Dharma and the Sangha.  It is important to understand  that the sangha is flawed and on occasion\, bound to cause disappointment.  How could it be otherwise\, when WE are the sangha.  Tonight’s discussion will be about the benefits of being in the SIM community and the larger SDC community\, and the organizational and personal challenges that arise from a group of disparate individuals coming together. Community can be\, if we allow it\, a very practical guide to waking up to the suffering in our life and the lives of others.  And perhaps if we can skillfully navigate our relationships in our SIM and larger SDC community\, we may find more ease in the wider communities of family\, neighborhood\, country… the planet. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”9758″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886 and Passcode: 843332 )For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Is your meditation “working?”
DESCRIPTION:Is your meditation “working?”\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde (click here for biographical details)\n\n\n\nIs your meditation “working?”For a new practitioner as well as a person who has been meditating for some time\, it’s important to periodically evaluate our meditation practice. Perhaps you have fallen into a practice that has become as “habitual” as many other facets of your life. Or perhaps you have stopped your meditation practice altogether. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate the state of your practice through questions such as: Is this the right practice for me? Is the same practice suitable for everyone? Should I adjust my practice periodically? Has my practice lost its “juice” and how do I get it back? Sometimes a minor adjustment makes all the difference and other times an entirely different approach is needed. We will spend the day investigating our practice as well as taking part in a discussion about what each of us individually need to do to allow insight to arise. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to stay for the entire day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Other participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. We encourage everyone to attend in-person since that group experience can be so meaningful.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. DESCRIPTION:How pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism\n\n\n\n(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Rick Maddock\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\nHow pleasant and unpleasant feelings (Vedanā) shape experience – Converging views from neuroscience and early Buddhism. The five aggregates (skandhas) together encompass all aspects of experience. Vedanā is one of the aggregates and is often defined as the feeling tone of experience ranging along a continuum from pleasant\, through neutral\, to unpleasant. The Buddha attributed great importance to mindfulness and clear comprehension of Vedanā. It is the focus of the second establishment of mindfulness in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. We will discuss the nature of Vedanā and its relationship with the other aggregates using language and perspectives from both early Buddhism and modern neuroscience. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n[give_form id=”40088″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\nRICK MADDOCK\, MD\, is a professor of psychiatry who teaches and conducts neuroscience research at the UC Davis School of Medicine. A long-time dharma practitioner with a focus on the teachings of early Indian Buddhism\, Rick has completed Spirit Rock’s training programs for senior students and teaches dharma in the Sacramento area and Sierra foothills. Truthfulness (sacca in Pali) is also one of the Paramis\, and it is said that this commitment to speak the truth was never broken by the Buddha on his way to awakening. As the same time\, we are surrounded by a society which seems to thrive on untruthful\, deceptive\, or exaggerated communication. On this evening\, we will look at various aspects of Truth in the Buddhist teachings\, up to the profound Four Noble Truths\, and explore how we can incorporate a commitment to truthfulness in our daily lives. \n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation \n\n\n\n[give_form id=”10304″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting:  https://us06web.zoom.us/join ( Meeting ID: 874 0623 9886) Passcode: 843332For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.
