SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - “Framing Experience”
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of “Framing Experience” In Performance\, Satisfaction and Happiness\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nEvery day we are presented with circumstances that can be opportunities\, challenges or problems depending on how our mind frames the experience that is taking place. The way our mind frames an experience has enormous influence in determining how we relate to the experience\, and how we feel about our capacity to deal with it skillfully and how we perform.\nThis event – how the mind frames what is it about to engage – is critical in guiding how\, and whether\, we can mobilize our inner resources to take on what life brings to us with determination\, patience and satisfaction; or whether we struggle\, suffer and are disappointed. This is the difference between feeling empowered and capable vs vulnerable and at risk.\nThis principle applies whether the circumstances\, or life situation\, involves our interior life\, our relationship with others\, or economic\, cultural or political events taking place in our community\, our country or the work.\nDennis’ talk Thursday night\, and the related discussion\, with focus on this critical\, and frequently overlooked\, element of practice. We will examine the what\, why and how of framing events from a practice perspective using real life illustrations. How can we use our practice to improve the fundamental way we relate to our experience\, improve our performance and feeling better about ourselves? \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Dennis Warren and SIM. \n[give_form id=”10310″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - “Just let it go!”
DESCRIPTION:“Just let it go!”\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\n  \nWhere have you heard that before? These words have become as ubiquitous a phrase as “Have a nice day!” How seriously should we take it\, and is this directive even possible OR desirable? \nThis rather prosaic statement is stating in colloquial terms the core Buddhist practice of “non-attachment” — which is often viewed as one of the most confusing and seemingly impossible Buddhist injunctions… especially as a lay practitioner. How can we become non-attached to our children? Personal relationships? The state of the world? The confusion may come from our misunderstanding about what this teaching really means. We will discuss the deeper meaning of this statement\, and methods for its practical application — both on and off the cushion. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard\, John Phelps - Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha
DESCRIPTION:Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha\nSit & Dharma Talk with with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard and SIM Community Member John “Boogie” Phelps.\nHow does our practice include the warmth of heart\, expressed freely in devotion? Sometimes it may seem as if Buddhism’s intention to relieve suffering and be awake to the way things are\, in Western practice centers\, sidesteps the personal intimacy of devotion that we see in Asian temple life\, and in other faith traditions. To whom and what is devotion given? What can we learn from others\, and from attending to our own longings and gratefulness? Rich and John have been exploring this topic and will invite our participation in that exploration. \nAfter the presentation\, Rich and Boogie will host an evening of meditation and chanting as long as people would like to stay (up to midnight). In many Theravada countries\, special practice days are observed in line with phases of the moon\, called Uposatha. On this full moon day\, you are also invited to practice the eight precepts. Chanting books will be provided. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk – Matt Russell – MBSR and Secular Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:MBSR and Secular Mindfulness\nThis talk will provide an introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM beginning August 21\, 2019. This presentation should be of interest both for individuals considering participating in the MBSR course\, as well as those interested in the place of secular mindfulness in contemporary culture and its connections with Buddhism. \nDesigned by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979\, MBSR is an integrative and scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness practices with group processing and psycho-education around stress. MBSR helps participants mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness\, as well as conditions such as anxiety\, depression\, headaches\, high blood pressure\, sleep disturbances\, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life. MBSR was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special\, “Healing and the Mind.” \n\nMBSR Course Available: Aug 2019 \n\nAt the bottom of this page\, you may enter the number of people planning to attend and select the button “Confirm RSVP”.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nSome of the most fundamental instructions we heard about practice – “Seek nothing\, Be fearful of nothing\, and You will be free” – seem to conflict with other fundamental instructions such as not striving for any particular results of state of mind. How do we explain this situation?\nThis evening we’ll explore the answer to this apparent contradiction in fundamental instructions. Understanding why such fundamental instructions are not contradictory and not in conflict is key to a sound practice. This will be the important territory we’ll investigate Thursday evening. SUMMARY:Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Is Forgiveness Always the Right Response?
DESCRIPTION:Is Forgiveness Always the Right Response?\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde \nWe read often of the power of forgiveness and are inspired by those who\, even after suffering the devastating loss of loved ones and community members\, still forgive. Is this always the right response? In the Buddha’s teachings\, patisaraniya-kamma or reconciliation — means a return to amicability\, and that requires much more than forgiveness. What are the criteria for reconciliation that the Buddha set out and what do we do if we feel reconciliation is impossible? \nThere are right and wrong ways of attempting reconciliation: those that skillfully meet the necessary requirements for reestablishing trust\, and those that don’t. To encourage right reconciliation among his followers\, the Buddha formulated detailed methods for achieving it\, along with a culture of values that encourages putting those methods to use. \nWe will discuss forgiveness\, reconciliation and what needs to take place for these conditions to occur… or not. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:Wisdom\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard \nNOTICE: Guest teacher Noliwe Alexander let us know she is ill and will not be able to join us as originally scheduled this Thursday. We will re-schedule her for the Fall or Winter\, and SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard is the substitute for her this week. \nThe talk tonight concludes Rich’s series on the three root defilements (greed\, hatred\, and delusion) and their antidotes. Wisdom is the way out of Delusion\, which we discussed on June 6. While we may picture wisdom as only available far away\, it is right here inthis moment\, waiting to be discovered. We will explore the different kinds of wisdom in the Buddhist tradition and the ways by which wisdom grows and benefits our practice and all beings. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. Some proponents claim that psychedelics have the potential to revolutionize health care as well as our understanding of the mind. \nPsychedelics and Buddhism have a long\, if seldom discussed\, overlapping history in this country that continues into the present day. \nThis talk will offer an inquiry into the implications of the current state of “psychedelic science” on dharma practitioners\, exploring the possibilities as well as the potential dangers and perils. \nWe will inquire into topics such as: psychedelics and the 5th precept\, the impact of psychedelics on the formation of the Dharma in the West\, academic research into the effects of psilocybin on the brains of long term meditators\, the current landscape of contemporary dharma teachers and practitioners who integrate psychedelic use into their dharma practice\, how we might think about psychedelics in the context of addiction and recovery. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Can We Be Aware of Delusion?
DESCRIPTION:Can We Be Aware of Delusion?\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard \nThis evening will be the latest in Rich’s exploration of the three roots of suffering – greed\, hatred\, and delusion – and how to work with them. Since delusion is always present along with any of the unskillful mind states\, it is especially important to recognize it and get to know its unique flavor. But how do we know when we’re deluded? Wouldn’t delusion prevent us from knowing we are deluded? Let’s look at these questions together in a spirit of inquiry. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Sue Taylor - The Paramitas as a Path...
DESCRIPTION:The Paramitas as a path to awakening in daily life\nSit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Sue Taylor \nThe paramitas offer us a practice path that helps us identify what Thanissaro Bhikku refers to as the “priorities” of awakening. This reflective investigation is often referred to as a Bodhisattva path. Its focus is on ten elements: generosity\, virtue/morality\, renunciation\, discernment/wisdom\, energy\, patience\, persistence\, truthfulness\, determination\, and good will. Using the paramitas as teachings for both a beginning journey and the culmination of an end of life reflection\, they allow those new to Buddhist practice\, as well as those who have aged with the teachings\, a common framework for the exploration of a fully embraced life. \n\nTalk Handout: A list of Readings\, Audio courses\, video courses (.pdf)\n\n \n  \nSue Taylor\, PhD\, MSW\, is a member of the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, an ordained Theravada Minister\, and an Environmental Chaplain. She is a professor at CSU Sacramento in the Department of Social Work. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Vesak and looking at Nibbana
DESCRIPTION:Vesak… and looking at “Nibbana”\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\n  \nThe most important holiday in the Buddhist calendar is Vesak. This year for many Buddhists Vesak is celebrated on Sunday\, May 19. It celebrates the important events in the Buddha’s life… his birth\, enlightenment and reaching a final state of no suffering… paranibbana. \nEnlightenment or Nibbana has a host of definitions\, mostly consisting of what it isn’t. The Buddha never explicitly said what it is\, or for that matter\, even exactly “who” gets enlightened. Due to the inability to speak about “Nibbana\, the“goal” of eliminating suffering is either impossibly vague or has disappeared entirely from view. \nWhat Western Buddhists are left with is the “path” and perfecting the path now appears to be the goal rather than actual enlightenment. Why is that? Is Nibbana the same in 2019 as 2\,600 years ago when the world was so radically different? We’ll investigate the traditional attempts at explaining Nibbana and also some new ideas emanating from the challenges of our times. \n  \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. Enter the amount you’d like to give and your donation will be shared with Rev. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Difficult\, Problematic\, Obsessive Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Difficult\, Problematic and Obsessive Thinking – Part II\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nThis will be the second talk\, in a series of two\, on working with difficult\, problematic and obsessive thinking. A four page handout accompanied Dennis’ first talk on this topic on March 7th. It would be helpful to review that handout. It would also be helpful to try the strategy for working with thought as well as the exercise on Thought and Listening\, contained in the handout\, in preparation for this evening.\nThe discussion this evening will look at the differences between working with thought during meditation and working with thought during daily lives. These are two different approaches.\nFor example\, the traditional instruction is to “not go into the content of thought” during meditation. Is that the whole instruction? Doesn’t the Insight Meditation process involve some form of evaluation of thought while one is meditating? How does this basic meditation instruction apply to thought in daily life?\nAmong other thing\, the evening will explore the five strategies the historical Buddha recommended for dealing with difficult\, problematic and/or obsessive thoughts that distract us for seeing into their implications or true nature of being either harmful or unhealthy nature.\n(Note: This talk will not cover the same materials present in the talk on the “Two Types of Thinking” presented earlier this month on April 18 by Community Teacher Diane Wilde.) \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you.
