SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - The Five Reflections
DESCRIPTION:The Five Reflections: The Adult Facts of Life\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard.\nThe Five Reflections are that we are subject (1) to aging\, (2) to illness\, and (3) to death; (4) that we will be separated from all that is dear to us; and (5) that we are responsible for our own actions and destiny. Many Buddhists throughout the world take these as a daily practice\, a reminder that everything is impermanent and that loss is never far away. The historical Buddha recommended reflecting often on these facts “whether one is a woman or a man\, lay or ordained.” On this evening of reflection and discussion\, we will examine each of these “adult facts of life” and explore our relationship to them. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nThursday Night Talk Dana\n“Generosity is the virtue that leads to peace.” – The Historical Buddha\nWe recognize that donating by cash or check at the time you attend this event may not always be convenient for you. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Starting Anew - Expectations For Practice
DESCRIPTION:Starting Anew – Expectations For Practice During The Next Decade\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nWith the start of a new decade\, there is real value in looking at what we can reasonably expect from our individual practices as community level practitioners? What tests or standards did the historical Buddha recommend for assessing how we have done in the last decade\, and what we may achieve in the new decade?\nThis evening will involve an examination of the historical context the lead to the Buddha’s approaches to psychological\, emotional and spiritual development. It will also involve an investigation of guidelines for creating a sound practice and assessing it impact in our lives.\nThe discussion this evening will build on a number of themes explored in Dennis’ presentation on December 19 “Craving and Clinging – Stepping Stones on The Path of Both Suffering & Awakening.” You can listen to the Dec 19th talk that’s posted to our audio dharma library (click here). SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Dana in Theory and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Dana in Theory and Practice\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard.\nDana is one of the core practices of our Insight/Vipassana tradition\, and it is fraught with potential baggage. On this evening\, we will examine dana and related concepts (giving\, generosity\, renunciation)\, its place on various Buddhist lists\, and how it might fit into our contemporary practice. Rich will include some of the classical stories of dana from the Pali Canon and invite discussion of how this practice\, which like many Buddhist practices runs “against the stream” of current American culture\, has been working for you. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Craving and Clinging
DESCRIPTION:Craving and Clinging (Attachment) – Stepping Stones on The Path of Both Suffering and Awakening\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nThe historical Buddha taught that the primary cause of suffering is “Craving.” But a careful examination of his nuanced and interconnected teachings reveals that this basic\, and apparently simple\, teaching is really about a chain of reactions that lead to suffering. Why did the Buddha designate craving as the second Noble Truth\, the origin of suffering? This seems like a surprising simple question\, but isn’t?\nThis evening will involve an examination of the historical parameters defining “craving” and its role in the chain-reaction of suffering. We’ll explore the differences between craving and “clinging”? Should these two experiences be understood as separate and independent experiences? Are they related experiences on a continuum of experience that leads to suffering? Or does craving morph into clinging?\nWhy being able to feel the difference between craving and clinging – the moment of discernment that sets the conditions for everything that follows and what may be possible – is the key to both managing and being liberated from suffering.\nDennis will also discuss a new 2020 SIM course entitled “Living and Practicing on the Other Side of Suffering” that is directly related to these questions and their answers. If that’s the case\, please use the form below to donate by credit card or your PayPal account. SUMMARY:SIM Community Potluck (Full Moon)
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM) hosts a community potluck during the holidays. This event is open to the general dharma community. \nSavory or Sweet\, bring a dish to share (6-8 Servings). In SIM’s tradition please bring your own plate\, cup\, utensils and as we attempt to go paperless\, cloth napkins. Again this year we will need a few people to bring table cloth(s) and holiday decor! We will be setting up our Holiday Feast starting from 6:30 PM\, and planning to eat at 7:00 PM. \n  \nA Unique Opportunity to Visit and Share\nAll are invited to come celebrate the holidays with our sangha\, as we eat together and enjoy each other’s company. Come and visit with your SIM friends\, acquaintances and dharma communities. This evening is a fun and joyful way for us to spend time getting to know one another better. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. \nThis evening will be what we make of it. \nThere will not be a Dharma talk. Instead\, as we’ve done in years past\, people are invited to share of themselves. We all have something to give – our personal dana – a poem\, a reading\, a story\, a song\, a dance\, a picture – whatever comes from the heart\, in the spirit of the holidays. It does not have to be original. For sharing your personal dana\, be mindful of the time\, 4-6 minutes\, so that everyone who wants to can have the opportunity to participate. To sign up for sharing your personal dana\, simply RSVP in the section shown below selecting the option “Potluck plus Sharing”. \nIf you have questions about the “talent”/dharma sharing part of the evening\, contact Miriam Greenberg.\nYou can also contact Barbara Colton for help with anything else. \nTell us if you’re Going or Not Going / Sharing or Not Sharing\nYour RSVP to this Community Potluck is requested as it will help us estimate the number of tables and chairs we’ll be setting up and help us organize the agenda for the event. At the bottom of this web page\, enter the number of people planning to attend\, select the appropriate Confirm RSVP button\, enter your Full Name\, your Email\, and your RSVP as “Going” or “Not Going”.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Greg Scharf - Mindfulness of Mind
DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness of Mind\nSit & Dharma Talk with Visiting Senior Teacher Greg Scharf\nThis talk will explore the nature of mind and will look at the Buddha’s instructions in the Third Establishment of Mindfulness in the Satipatthana Sutta. \nThe Satipatthana Sutta is one of the most revered teachings in the Pali Canon and forms the Buddha’s single most comprehensive set of instructions for Vipassana Meditation. In the 3rd section of this discourse\, Mindfulness of Mind\, the Buddha describes simple but extremely powerful & liberating ways to bring awareness to the mind in meditation. This talk explores our direct experience of the mind as process\, as well as offering reflections for the practical application of the Buddha’s instructions in this core teaching. \n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf)\n\n \nGreg Scharf\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Buddhism and Euthanasia
DESCRIPTION:Buddhism and Euthanasia\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\nSpot is old\, ill and suffering. As painful as it is for loving pet guardians\, we now have to make a difficult decision — is it time to consider euthanasia? For humans\, California End of Life Option Act is a law which allows terminally ill adults resident in the state of California to access medical aid in dying by self-administering lethal drugs. Would you take advantage of this? Should you? \nWe look to our spiritual traditions for guidance on difficult life and death situations such as this. Tonight we will look at the history of teachings on the subject from a Buddhist perspective and what contemporary teachers have to say. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Laura Rosenthal - What’s Working?
DESCRIPTION:What’s Working?\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Member Laura Rosenthal\nBuddhist practice emphasizes attention to the way our mental\, verbal and physical actions lead us into and out of dukkha – sometimes translated as suffering or a sense of unsatisfactoriness. This experiential inquiry into “suffering and the end of suffering” supports us in cultivating wholesome qualities of mind and heart that help us wake up. But often\, in undertaking this inquiry\, we emphasize those actions that lead to suffering. We may overlook the things we are already doing or experiencing that lead away from suffering and toward peace and ease. \nJoin long-term practitioner and SIM participant Laura Rosenthal in a dharma talk and group conversation about “What’s Working.” We will focus on the way aspects of our lives and actions already support our waking up – and on what we can learn from looking at this. To encourage fluid group participation\, this talk will not be recorded. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - The Five Aggregates
DESCRIPTION:A Lump of Foam: The Five Aggregates\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nThe five Aggregates of Clinging are an excellent means for seeing the three universal characteristics: impermanence\, conditionality/insubstantiality and suffering/stress. This phrase is repeated like a mantra in the many suttas about the aggregates: “This is not mine\, this I am not\, this is not my self.” We will discuss how to use the aggregates in our daily lives to foster insight into how we suffer. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Waking Up in Perilous Times
DESCRIPTION:Waking Up in Perilous Times\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\nThe times they are a-changing! This could be stated by every generation and each new epoch in our human and natural history. But the unimaginable changes taking place now — the climate emergency as well as “alternative” political realities — have never happened so quickly leaving little time to adjust. It’s no longer just the individual who struggles with dukkha or stress\, as the Buddha taught. Now our entire natural world is suffering and truth itself is continually being redefined according to partisan politics. This begs the question\, is our individual awakening the remedy for the situation in which we find ourselves? Or do we need to start investigating and practicing a “societal awakening.” And if so\, what would that look like? How does it align with Buddhist principles? And do we even want to? Not an easy topic\, but one that needs to be considered right now. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Essential Role of Context
DESCRIPTION:The Essential Role of Context or Framing in Buddhist Practice\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nContext – the set of ideas\, beliefs and principles which guide our understanding of ourselves\, others\, our relationships and how the world works – shapes our experience\, our assessment of our experience and the choices we make. Context\, in very real and tangible ways\, determines how we relate to our experience.\nIn most cases\, we don’t give context a second thought. It is the unseen foundation or groundwork of experience that lies just below our normal perception of events.\nBuddhist practice involves a conscious and determined re-framing of the context we use to experience and relate to events. The elements of this re-framing – the ideas and principles – are significantly different than the psychological and emotional viewpoints that dominate conventional thinking. Some elements are radically different. In Buddhist practice we refer to this re—framing process as the “Cultivation of Right View.”\nDuring this evening we’ll look at several areas of difference in fundamental context or View between conventional and Buddhist viewpoints; and how those differences translate into significant differences in how we relate to and understand experience – particularly suffering and satisfaction.\nPlease try to attend this evening if you plan on attending the one-day retreat Dennis will be leading on Saturday\, September 28th. This evening will lay a helpful foundation for your experience of the one-day retreat. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - “Framing Experience”
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of “Framing Experience” In Performance\, Satisfaction and Happiness\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nEvery day we are presented with circumstances that can be opportunities\, challenges or problems depending on how our mind frames the experience that is taking place. The way our mind frames an experience has enormous influence in determining how we relate to the experience\, and how we feel about our capacity to deal with it skillfully and how we perform.\nThis event – how the mind frames what is it about to engage – is critical in guiding how\, and whether\, we can mobilize our inner resources to take on what life brings to us with determination\, patience and satisfaction; or whether we struggle\, suffer and are disappointed. This is the difference between feeling empowered and capable vs vulnerable and at risk.\nThis principle applies whether the circumstances\, or life situation\, involves our interior life\, our relationship with others\, or economic\, cultural or political events taking place in our community\, our country or the work.\nDennis’ talk Thursday night\, and the related discussion\, with focus on this critical\, and frequently overlooked\, element of practice. We will examine the what\, why and how of framing events from a practice perspective using real life illustrations. How can we use our practice to improve the fundamental way we relate to our experience\, improve our performance and feeling better about ourselves? \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - “Just let it go!”
DESCRIPTION:“Just let it go!”\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde\n  \nWhere have you heard that before? These words have become as ubiquitous a phrase as “Have a nice day!” How seriously should we take it\, and is this directive even possible OR desirable? \nThis rather prosaic statement is stating in colloquial terms the core Buddhist practice of “non-attachment” — which is often viewed as one of the most confusing and seemingly impossible Buddhist injunctions… especially as a lay practitioner. How can we become non-attached to our children? Personal relationships? The state of the world? The confusion may come from our misunderstanding about what this teaching really means. We will discuss the deeper meaning of this statement\, and methods for its practical application — both on and off the cushion. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard\, John Phelps - Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha
DESCRIPTION:Pilgrimage\, Devotion\, and Uposatha\nSit & Dharma Talk with with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard and SIM Community Member John “Boogie” Phelps.\nHow does our practice include the warmth of heart\, expressed freely in devotion? Sometimes it may seem as if Buddhism’s intention to relieve suffering and be awake to the way things are\, in Western practice centers\, sidesteps the personal intimacy of devotion that we see in Asian temple life\, and in other faith traditions. To whom and what is devotion given? What can we learn from others\, and from attending to our own longings and gratefulness? Rich and John have been exploring this topic and will invite our participation in that exploration. \nAfter the presentation\, Rich and Boogie will host an evening of meditation and chanting as long as people would like to stay (up to midnight). In many Theravada countries\, special practice days are observed in line with phases of the moon\, called Uposatha. On this full moon day\, you are also invited to practice the eight precepts. Chanting books will be provided. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk – Matt Russell – MBSR and Secular Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:MBSR and Secular Mindfulness\nThis talk will provide an introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in anticipation of the 8-week MBSR course which will be offered at SIM beginning August 21\, 2019. This presentation should be of interest both for individuals considering participating in the MBSR course\, as well as those interested in the place of secular mindfulness in contemporary culture and its connections with Buddhism. \nDesigned by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979\, MBSR is an integrative and scientifically validated approach that combines mindfulness practices with group processing and psycho-education around stress. MBSR helps participants mobilize their inner resources to alleviate suffering associated with chronic pain and illness\, as well as conditions such as anxiety\, depression\, headaches\, high blood pressure\, sleep disturbances\, gastrointestinal problems and the stresses of everyday life. MBSR was featured in Bill Moyers’ television special\, “Healing and the Mind.” \n\nMBSR Course Available: Aug 2019 \n\nAt the bottom of this page\, you may enter the number of people planning to attend and select the button “Confirm RSVP”.

SUMMARY:*Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Nothing\, Fearful of Nothing\, Being Free\nSit & Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren \nSome of the most fundamental instructions we heard about practice – “Seek nothing\, Be fearful of nothing\, and You will be free” – seem to conflict with other fundamental instructions such as not striving for any particular results of state of mind. How do we explain this situation?\nThis evening we’ll explore the answer to this apparent contradiction in fundamental instructions. Understanding why such fundamental instructions are not contradictory and not in conflict is key to a sound practice.
