Human beings appear to be the only species that are conscious of our mortality. Yet most people purposefully ignore this fact of our existence\, preferring to put efforts\, thoughts and practice on “more pleasant things”. We yearn to “wake up”\, to let go of our endless attachments and experience contentment and ease in our lives. Paradoxically\, facing the death of our loved ones and ourselves\, is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and waking up to impermanence.  It is also a teaching that can greatly reduce and perhaps even eliminate the biggest delusion of all… that everyone else will die\, except me. We’ll examine different viewpoints within Buddhism\, as well as other spiritual systems. While the difference between these two types of love may initially seem clear\, the actual experience and expressions of Love — when it is freed from craving\, clinging and identification — are diverse\, rich\, and inspiring. \n\n\n\nBefore his passing\, the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh gifted us with a beautiful and insightful little book entitled “How To Love.” In its pages\, he offers a direct and heartfelt exploration of what it truly means to love—ourselves\, one another\, all beings\, the natural world\, and the Dharma itself. We practice diligently for months and life events intervene\, taking us away from regular formal practice. Circumstances change: Begin again. We get caught up in the busy-ness of our day and lose awareness. Then we remember: Begin again. It has been said that beginning again IS the practice. Whether in formal meditation\, on retreat\, or in daily life\, the ability to start over without judging ourselves or getting discouraged is key to developing the continuous awareness that leads to insight and transformation. In this daylong retreat\, Rich will offer a modified version of SIM’s beginning class retreat\, with lightly guided sitting and walking periods. There will be a body scan and opportunities for questions and responses. Bring a lunch and plan to stay all day in noble silence.
