It is the doorway to deeply experiencing the support and beauty of inter-dependence\, embodiment\, intuitive wisdom\, and the sacredness of being alive on this planet. This day will explore non-self from the perspectives of the Historical Buddha’s psychology\, teachings and methods\, and their relationship to Western psychology. It will include practices we can integrate into both our daily meditations and lives. The goal of the day is to have a practical\, helpful experience of non-self that can act as a foundation for further exploration and development. The subject matter of this one-day will be appropriate for all stages of practice. In person only. No Zoom. Plan on staying on-site for the who day. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nDeath As Our TeacherJust as life is happening all around us\, so is death. Human beings appear to be the only species that are conscious of our mortality. Yet most people purposefully ignore this fact of our existence\, preferring to put effort\, thoughts and practice on “more pleasant things”. We yearn to “wake up”\, to let go of our endless attachments and experience contentment and ease in our lives. Paradoxically\, facing the death of our loved ones and ourselves\, is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and waking up to impermanence. It is also a teaching that can greatly reduce and perhaps even eliminate the biggest delusion of all… that everyone else will die\, except me. By avoiding the reality of our own deaths\, we deny ourselves the life-affirming lessons that acceptance of death provides… that life CAN BE lived joyfully and with gratitude.Bring a lunch and plan on staying the entire day. \n\n\n\n\nThis daylong may not be suitable for those with anxiety\, trauma or those who have recently experienced the death of a loved one. \n\n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n09/12/2024 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n10/26/2024 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n10/26/2024 – For registration after the retreat\, send a message to the registrar to arrange payment.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. The fee is $25.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Working with Memory\, Remembering\, Repetitive Thinking and Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Daylong In-person Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nWorking with Memory\, Remembering\, Repetitive Thinking and SufferingAlmost all of us have had this experience: After an encounter with someone\, we reflect on the situation and think they are upset with or mad at us. Repetitive thought sets in re-enforcing and strengthening our concern. We become anxious and this affects our behavior. We feel uncomfortable when we see the person\, or maybe avoid them. And then…we talk with the person and find out they were never upset or mad in the first place. This is a wonderful illustration of the Historical Buddha’s teaching that we make not just the world\, but our suffering and happiness\, with our thoughts. This one-day workshop will explore the pivotal and major role that memory\, remembering and related repetitive thinking play in our identity and suffering. We will investigate and learn how to work skillfully with these qualities of mind from the perspectives of Buddhist psychology and modern memory research. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talks\, and small and large group discussions. The day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Wisdom is the skill of discerning what is needed in any given moment or phase of practice and how to adjust (or not!). On this daylong retreat\, we will explore different practices of sitting and walking meditation on different points of the spectrum from acceptance to cultivation. There will be plenty of time for practice questions and discussion.Bring a lunch and plan to stay all day. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat/Workshop - Dennis Warren - When Life Changes
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat/Workshop with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nWhen Life Changes – A One Day Retreat / WorkshopThis one-day retreat / workshop explores the one constant in all our lives – change. \n\n\n\nSome of these changes are sudden. Some gradual. Some big. Some\, at least initially\, small. Changes in relationships\, finances\, jobs\, living circumstances. Changes in capacity – mental\, emotional\, physical. Changes in health and quality of life. Changes in ourselves\, in those we know\, in the world as we have known it. \n\n\n\nOur actual experience of change frequently catches us off guard even when the change itself is anticipated. We feel unprepared\, disoriented\, disorganized. Buddhist practices offer the possibility of being prepared for change\, even when we have no idea what it will be. They offer the possibility of experiencing change as possibility\, rather than primarily as obstacle or problem. \n\n\n\nThis day will explore Buddhist perspectives\, tools and practices that help us work with change large and small. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talk\, and small and large group discussions. \n\n\n\nThe day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. You may attend either session or both. \n\n\n\nWhile Thursday evening’s session introduced the first three truths\, Saturday’s daylong retreat will be a deeper dive into the fourth truth\, the path to the end of suffering. As a framework for this exploration\, we will use the three trainings of the path: the training in sila (ethical conduct\, harmonious living)\, the training in samadhi (concentration\, collectedness of mind)\, and the training in pañña (wisdom\, insight\, understanding). Through guided meditation\, short dharmettes\, and discussion\, we will see how these trainings free us from unskillful thoughts\, speech\, and actions\, from obsessive mind states\, and ultimately from dukkha (unsatisfactoriness/vulnerability/suffering) itself. The day will also feature readings from American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi’s latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023). SUMMARY:7-Night Residential Retreat with Greg Scharf
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat with Greg Scharf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: Finding a True Refuge\n\n\n\nIn a world of change and unpredictability\, in times that often feel chaotic and confusing\, where do we look for ease and security? Often\, in our search for a dependable refuge\, we mistakenly turn to that which is essentially unreliable and unable to provide the stability we seek. \n\n\n\nInsight (or Vipassana) meditation is the simple\, direct observation of the mind/body process with relaxed\, open and careful attention. As we connect with our experience from a place of spacious stillness and steadiness\, we learn to meet the changing conditions we encounter with greater ease and balance of mind. As our understanding deepens\, equanimity in the face of change grows\, and we discover a refuge that is to a great extent independent of life’s changing conditions. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike and will include meditation instruction\, Dharma talks\, practice meetings with the teacher\, and optional mindful movement. A Meditation retreat is a rare opportunity to take time away from our usual activities for the express purpose of turning inward in order to deepen our understanding of what it actually means to be human. Time on retreat connects us with what we truly value in life and gives us the time & space to deepen our understanding of who & what we really are. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration (Closed)\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 27 registrants. Beginning Saturday\, September 9\, this webpage will accept online registration payments. Before making any payment\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so. If needed\, contact the retreat registrar with your request to pay a 50% deposit. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n\n\nThanks for Attending the Retreat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudio Recordings\n\n\n\nFor a limited time\, talks and meditations recorded during the retreat are available to everyone that attended. To access the audio files\, click here. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of potentially challenging times\, partial scholarships might be available if needed. To request a partial scholarship\, pay a $225 deposit fee after registration opens and before September 30th. Then watch for a follow-up email from the retreat registrar. SIM has a limited number of partial scholarships available based on need. If the $225 deposit payment is currently not possible\, contact the retreat registrar to apply for a scholarship with other options. \n\n\n\nScholarship Donations\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to contribute into the scholarship fund to help someone else be able to afford this special dharma opportunity\, enter the amount you’d like to donate in the DONATE NOW box. Donating into the fund won’t register you for the retreat. \n\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”25463″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\nCancellations\n\n\n\n\nThrough September 30th\, full refund if requested by this date if someone on the waiting list takes the reservation.\n\n\n\nOn or after October 15th\, deposit will be retained by SIM. Balance may be refundable if the spot is filled by a wait-listed person. Otherwise\, the balance will not be refunded. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on a request demonstrating financial hardship.\n\n\n\n\nSchedule – Summary of Dates\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Registration opens; online payments accepted.\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request full refund (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request a scholarship (see scholarship details listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Last day to request refund of balance paid (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Registration payment in full due.\n\n\n\nTBD – Registration closes\, date to be announced.\n\n\n\nNovember 12 – The retreat begins (check-in starts at 3:30 PM).\n\n\n\nNovember 19 – The retreat ends (check-out at 11:00 AM).\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nOur priority is to protect the wellbeing of everyone who attends the SIM Annual Retreat. The SIM Board will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and required and recommended safety measures from federal\, State and local health agencies\, and the Mercy Center\, with consideration of our Sangha demographics. \n\n\n\nAt a minimum\, we will require proof of vaccinations and boosters (if eligible) for COVID-19 at least two weeks before the retreat\, along with proof of COVID rapid testing within 24 hours prior to attending and a second rapid test two days into the retreat (SIM will provide tests if needed). \n\n\n\nAdditional protocols will very likely include masking when indoors with others\, and social distancing as space allows. \n\n\n\nSIM will update the protocols to reflect the situation in the summer. \n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here.

It can be a very confusing topic. Samadhi is often defined as attaining a state of mind called jhana which means “absorption.” This definition of jhana refers to a mind completely absorbed in concentration. Other interpretations of samadhi ignore jhana completely\, and focus on “insight” or vipassana as all that is needed to “wake up.” Others counter that the development of jhana is crucial for the development of insight. Who is correct? \n\n\n\nIn this daylong\, we’ll discuss the range of teachings in the Pali tradition on the relationship between samadhi\, jhana and insight. We’ll look at controversies that have developed about the interpretations of samadhi and how ultimately\, these various definitions can actually be quite useful as we individually learn what practice works for each of us. \n\n\n\nThe day will be in silence.  Please bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n09/11/2023 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n10/28/2023 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n10/30/2023 – Online registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Is your meditation “working?”
DESCRIPTION:Is your meditation “working?”\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde (click here for biographical details)\n\n\n\nIs your meditation “working?”For a new practitioner as well as a person who has been meditating for some time\, it’s important to periodically evaluate our meditation practice. Perhaps you have fallen into a practice that has become as “habitual” as many other facets of your life. Or perhaps you have stopped your meditation practice altogether. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate the state of your practice through questions such as: Is this the right practice for me? Is the same practice suitable for everyone? Should I adjust my practice periodically? Has my practice lost its “juice” and how do I get it back? Sometimes a minor adjustment makes all the difference and other times an entirely different approach is needed. We will spend the day investigating our practice as well as taking part in a discussion about what each of us individually need to do to allow insight to arise. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to stay for the entire day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Other participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. We encourage everyone to attend in-person since that group experience can be so meaningful.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Greg Scharf - Recognizing Natural Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat with Visiting Senior Teacher Greg Scharf\n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. In 2019\, he completed Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
