SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:A One Day Retreat– with Ayya Santacitta and SIM’s Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThe Buddha’s advise on what is insanity and how to cultivate a sound mind\nWe human beings\, in this human realm\, rarely realize that we operating in a state of of delusion. Not only are we operating in a deluded state\, we expect this current mind state to provide us a sense of happiness and well-being. Because we really have no idea what we are doing\, the goal of happiness is illusive and frustrating. This is also the Buddhist view of mental disease. Delusion is a mental illness that causes all sorts of suffering; mental health can be restored by correcting the flaws in how the mind operates. We will investigate our “mental disease” in both classical terms as well as our contemporary daily life and how we can cultivate “sanity” both for ourselves and the larger world itself. \nPlease bring a meal to share with others which includes a lunch offering to Ayya Santacitta. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:2019 SIM Residential Retreat

This retreat is designed to deepen practice skills and foster insights into the stages of awakening and their implications for daily life. \nIt is rare for a community sangha to sponsor a regular residential retreat. When we practice together in a residential setting\, the power of our individual efforts joins together into a powerful force of deepen your own practice and to deepen our connections as a community. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nWhile this retreat is appropriate for both more and less experienced meditators\, we encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\nDo  you have a regular practice?\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\nHave you sat at a residential retreat before?\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact SIM’s event manager at reg-ret-reg@sactoinsight.org. \nOur retreat teachers this year will be Kamala Masters and Vance Pryor. \nKamala Masters began practicing meditation in the mid-seventies attending retreats in the Theravada tradition. She integrates this teaching with what she has learned from her other respected teachers.\nSince the early nineties\, Kamala has been teaching in the United States and abroad\, and is a Guiding Teacher and member of the Board of Directors at the Insight Meditation Society. In 1995 she co-founded Vipassana Metta Foundation with Steve Armstrong\, developing the Maui Dhamma Sanctuary for self-reliant students to practice. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:The Role Of “Framing Experience” In Performance\, Satisfaction and Happiness\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nEvery day we are presented with circumstances that can be opportunities\, challenges or problems depending on how our mind frames the experience that is taking place. The way our mind frames an experience has enormous influence in determining how we feel about our capacity to deal with a set of facts skillfully and how we perform.\nThis event – how the mind frames what is it about to engage – is critical in guiding how\, and whether\, we can mobilize our inner resources to take on what life brings to us with determination\, patience and satisfaction; or whether we struggle\, suffer and are disappointed. This is the difference between feeling empowered and capable vs vulnerable and at risk.\nThis principle applies whether the circumstances\, or life situation\, involves our interior life\, our relationship with others\, or economic\, cultural or political events taking place in our community\, our country or the work.\nThis one day will look at ways we can use the framing process as a practical\, hand-on tool. We will examine the what\, why and how of framing events from a practice perspective using real life illustrations. We will explore how we can use our practice to improve the fundamental way we relate to our experience\, improve our performance and feel better about ourselves? This will include Dennis sharing some of his recent experiences in dealing with medical challenges\, pain and other significant life situations.\nPlease try to attend Dennis’ talk on Thursday\, September 26 if you plan on attending this one-day retreat. That talk will lay a helpful foundation for your experience of the one-day retreat. \nAll are welcome. Come for all day or for a portion of the day. Please bring your lunch. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher\, Professional Level (CMT-P)\, by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Exploring Realistic Standards
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Realistic Standards for Community Practice\nComparing Monastic & Community Level Practice\nA One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe historical Buddha created different models of practice. One for monastics – nuns and monks – and another for community level practitioners with families whose lives are filled with obligations and responsibilities.\nThe practice approach we’re developing here in the West is an attempt to blend these two models. We are studying and practicing from teachings that were\, for the most part\, intended for monastics. These individuals were engaged in intense\, deep and sophisticated practices in protected environments shielded from most of the pressures\, stresses and responsibilities each of us routinely face every day. The monastic model\, as well\, did not involve responsibility for addressing the real-life social\, economic\, family and political conditions that contribute so substantially to the stress of community level practitioners.\nThis one-day retreat will examine the different models of practice offered by the historical Buddha. It will explore questions about\, and the implications of\, our attempt to blend them into a new western model. Our goal for the day will be a relaxed discussion that will help each of us establish realistic standards for our individual practices informed by historical context.\nDennis will also discuss a new 2020 SIM course entitled “Living and Practicing on the Other Side of Suffering” that is directly related to issues that will be raised during this one-day. \n\nRetreat flyer (.PDF)\n\nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Tangled in Thought
DESCRIPTION:Tangled in Thought  –  How to beat your mind at its own game\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde \nSome new practical ideas will be offered at this daylong and there will be a writing/observation exercise. Please bring paper and pen. \nIt’s the New Year\, the first retreat of 2020\, and perhaps we made the resolution that this is the year where we are really going to develop a meaningful meditation practice. \nFor many of us\, the challenge for developing an ongoing meditation practice is the inability to let go of thought. Memories\, plans\, past and future… all seem to take us away from that perceived “blissful state” we long for. The good news is that we can actually work with the thinking process and incorporate it into our meditation practice. We will discuss our practice as well as practical strategies for working with ‘thinking” on January 25. Please bring your lunch. \n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Awareness Practice and Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Awareness Practice and Inquiry\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n“Awareness knows” says Burmese monk and meditation teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya. Sounds simple – is it? With all the approaches to mindfulness floating around\, it may be a challenge to know how to practice a simple yet effective form of awareness that leads to insight and eventually freedom. Let’s spend a day of practice and inquiry into the nature\, feeling\, and function of awareness. With reminders from Sayadaw’s two most recent books\, “Collecting Gold Dust” and “Relax and Be Aware” as support\, we will practice sitting\, standing\, and walking meditation\, with some guided meditations. There will also be periods for questions and answers. The day will otherwise be held in noble silence. Bring a lunch and plan to spend all day on site to support continuity of awareness. Copies of Sayadaw U Tejaniya’s book “Dhamma Everywhere” will be offered to the first 20 people who register. \n\nEvent Flyer (.PDF)\n\nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. He is currently enrolled in Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. Diane Wilde\nThis retreat is cancelled.\nIt’s a Revolution of the Mind!\nA revolution is taking place in our own minds just as it is taking place in society. The amount of anxiety\, concern\, and fear is beyond anything we have seen before. For many of us\, these past few months in quarantine have opened up our minds to mental experiences which are new to us. Fear of the unknown\, fear of sickness\, fear of societal upheaval. Yet contemporary scientists/neurologists as well as the Buddha\, have said that the mind is capable of contending with these unprecedented times. We’ll practice together and investigate relevant Buddhist teachings as well as neurological studies and techniques for uprooting anxiety and stress. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. \nThe Teacher offers the teachings freely in the tradition of the Buddha\, and her livelihood is completely sustained by the generosity of the communities she serves. Dana (donation) for these priceless teachings will be gratefully accepted by the teacher\, giving participants the opportunity to freely engage in the practice of generosity\, the first step toward freedom. You may donate for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/23/2020 – Registration opens.\n06/26/2020 – Registration via this website is closed.\n06/27/2020 – This retreat is cancelled.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:(Remote) 2020 SIM Annual Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM)\n15th Annual Retreat\n“Keeping our Footing on Unsteady Ground”\nThis is a five day\, online Zoom event with Senior Teacher John Travis\n(Friday\, September 11th at approximately 6 pm through Wednesday\, September 16th by 11 am)\nResidential retreat is widely viewed in the Theravada tradition as an important\, if not essential\, component in the path towards awakening. Residential meditation practice provides an environment that helps us turn inward towards a way of being where we live and act from a place of stillness\, satisfaction\, and kindness. This retreat is designed to deepen practice skills and foster insights into the stages of awakening and their implications for daily life. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nIt is rare for a community sangha to sponsor a regular residential retreat and this year’s retreat will be unusual because we’ll have it online via Zoom. Practicing online together for multiple days\, our individual efforts join together into a powerful force to deepen our practice\, integrate it into our daily lives in our home environment\, and strengthen our connections as a community. This year there will be two options for attending this retreat. See Participation and Registration sections below. \nWhile this retreat is appropriate for both experienced and less experienced meditators\, we encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\nDo  you have a regular practice?\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\nHave you sat at a multi-day retreat before?\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact the retreat registrar for advise. \nOur retreat teacher this year will be John Travis. \nJohn Travis is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working. \nParticipation\nThis retreat is designed to support those who are able to make this a full-time at home self-retreat\, as well as those who may need to work\, care for family members or do other daily life activities during parts of the rest of their day/evening.\nEveryone is strongly encouraged to attend the 3-4 sessions each day with the Teacher. To view the current retreat schedule\, click here. Full participants will also have one small group check-in with the Teacher. \nFor those with uncertain work or travel schedules\, there are a limited number of spaces available to audit the retreat. Auditing does not include the small group check-in with the Teacher. If you require this accommodation\, select the Ticket option “Auditing“. \nCost\nThe registration fee will be $100 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the teacher\, John Travis. \n \nRegistration\nNote: If this retreat is full (you’ll see a message SOLD OUT)\, there’s a good chance you may still be able to attend since people’s plans change and there will likely be some cancellations. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Working with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\nWorking with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit\nConceit (“māna” in Pali) is one of the last defilements\, and the most subtle process to fall away as we begin“waking up”. It is much more than a feeling of superiority\, although that is certainly one aspect. Conceit in Buddhism can mean feeling superior\, inferior\, or the same as others. In this daylong retreat\, we will look more deeply at its subtlety through the use meditation\, “thought experiments” as well as informative daily experiences. We may begin to see how deeply integrated conceit is in all of our judgements of ourselves and others. The amount of suffering in our lives is in direct proportion to our inner conceit.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Resting in Awareness - At Home
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nResting in Awareness – At Home\nAwareness is always accessible\, and it does not require special effort. As contemporary Burmese teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya says\, “Everything you need for understanding to arise is surrounding you in this moment. It is all on your doorstep: family\, friends\, work colleagues\, and any other relationships you may have can all be powerful catalysts in your work of revealing wisdom.” What is difficult is to remember to be aware. With the pandemic limiting our opportunities to practice at retreat centers\, it is more important than ever to remember to bring awareness into all activities.\nIn this simple day of practice\, we will practice sitting\, walking\, and standing meditation wherever we are. Throughout the day\, Rich will offer several options for promoting awareness in any posture or activity. There will also be opportunities for questions and sharing experiences.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004.
