Some gradual. Some big. Some\, at least initially\, small. Changes in relationships\, finances\, jobs\, living circumstances. Changes in capacity – mental\, emotional\, physical. Changes in health and quality of life. Changes in ourselves\, in those we know\, in the world as we have known it. \n\n\n\nOur actual experience of change frequently catches us off guard even when the change itself is anticipated. We feel unprepared\, disoriented\, disorganized. Buddhist practices offer the possibility of being prepared for change\, even when we have no idea what it will be. They offer the possibility of experiencing change as possibility\, rather than primarily as obstacle or problem. \n\n\n\nThis day will explore Buddhist perspectives\, tools and practices that help us work with change large and small. Some practices of meditative awareness rely on acceptance and openness\, while others require cultivation and intention. Wisdom is the skill of discerning what is needed in any given moment or phase of practice and how to adjust (or not!). On this daylong retreat\, we will explore different practices of sitting and walking meditation on different points of the spectrum from acceptance to cultivation. Repetitive thought sets in re-enforcing and strengthening our concern. We become anxious and this affects our behavior. We feel uncomfortable when we see the person\, or maybe avoid them.And then…we talk with the person and find out they were never upset or mad in the first place. This is a wonderful illustration of the Historical Buddha’s teaching that we make not just the world\, but our suffering and happiness\, with our thoughts.This one-day workshop will explore the pivotal and major role that memory\, remembering and related repetitive thinking play in our identity and suffering. We will investigate and learn how to work skillfully with these qualities of mind from the perspectives of Buddhist psychology and modern memory research. Paradoxically\, facing the death of our loved ones and ourselves\, is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and waking up to impermanence. Being aware of our state of mind\, we are less likely to react unconsciously when things don’t go our way. Anchored in the Buddha’s teachings\, the retreat offers practices to awaken awareness\, calm the mind\, and nurture the qualities of lovingkindness\, compassion\, and equanimity. Suitable for both beginners and seasoned practitioners\, the program includes systematic meditation guidance (including metta/lovingkindness)\, Dharma talks\, and opportunities to meet with teachers to discuss your practice. Through stillness and presence\, participants will cultivate insight\, wisdom\, patience\, self-compassion and resilience for daily life. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates no more than 25 registrants. Registration on this webpage opened on January 29.The registration fee is $1000\, with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and a portion of SIM’s administration costs. Once you fill out the registration form\, you will receive an invoice to be paid upon receipt. If the retreat fills before you complete your registration\, you will have the opportunity to add your name to the wait list. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow. However\, if needed\, you may pay a 50% deposit and the remaining balance must be paid by February 28. If the remaining balance is not received by February 28\, your deposit will be refunded automatically\, and your spot at the retreat will be offered to the next person on the Waiting List.To register\, find the “Register Now – Yes I Want to Attend” section of this page and fill out the registration form. \n\n\n\nPartial Scholarships\n\n\n\nSIM encourages registrants to pay the full registration fee if finances allow. Human beings appear to be the only species that are conscious of our mortality. Yet most people purposefully ignore this fact of our existence\, preferring to put efforts\, thoughts and practice on “more pleasant things”. We yearn to “wake up”\, to let go of our endless attachments and experience contentment and ease in our lives. Paradoxically\, facing the death of our loved ones and ourselves\, is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and waking up to impermanence.  It is also a teaching that can greatly reduce and perhaps even eliminate the biggest delusion of all… that everyone else will die\, except me. We encourage everyone to sign up for both days but you may register for a single day if needed. DESCRIPTION:Dennis Warren\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat/Workshop with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nArtificial Intelligence & Buddhist Practice: Harnessing AI to Support Study\, Meditation and Daily LifeThis day of practice explores how emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can meaningfully support the study\, meditation and integration of Buddhist teachings into daily life.Participants will move beyond common technology-related concerns to engage with a grounded\, practical framework for working with the opportunities and challenges of using AI into a contemplative practice.The day is structured around real-world AI examples drawn from the teacher’s experience around three themes: What you can do with AI; How to do it; and What not to do.Participants will leave with specific guidelines and hands-on tools they can use immediately.Topics will include: \n\n\n\n\nWhat AI is\, and isn’t\, from a technological perspective.\n\n\n\nWhat AI is\, and isn’t\, from a Buddhist perspective.\n\n\n\nWhat a helpful Buddhist relationship with AI could look like.\n\n\n\nHow AI can support and deepen our study\, meditation\, and daily use of Buddhist teachings.\n\n\n\n\nDuring this one day\, we’ll have at least one period of mindful movement\, so please bring your yoga mat. The session will be led by Sandra (Sam) Halford\, a member of our community who is both a therapist and a trauma-sensitive certified yoga instructor. \n\n\n\nNo prior AI experience is necessary. The day is appropriate for all levels of practice and experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. All participants will attend in-person as the retreat will not be available via Zoom.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration button shown below. Since your registration choice indicates that you’ll be attending in-person\, registering early helps us determine how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n\n\n\nAfter you’ve registered you may later offer a donation in gratitude of the teacher.
