SUMMARY:(CANCELED) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:* * * This retreat is canceled. * * *\nOne Day Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRetreat theme: The Body in Question – An Investigation\nThe Body in Question – your body – will be the focus of this one-day retreat. The body at rest\, in motion and in relationship to others and the events around it. Our time together will involve investigations and experiments in sitting meditation\, common daily movements and active forms of movement – yoga\, Qi Gong\, golf\, dance and may more – as meditation.\nOur body\, and how our body moves\, form core elements of our identity\, our skills and our relationships with other. Being more conscious and purposeful in understanding how to be in the body\, stay in the body and fully experience the body is foundational to contemplative practice and to living fully.\nA key question we’ll examine: How can we help our body and its movements become a more vivid and enriching parts of our contemplative practice and our life whatever its current condition and limitations?\nIt would be helpful to review Dennis’ talk on August 12th entitled “Is Movement Meditation?” (click here) as preparation for this one day.\nThe subject matter of this one day is appropriate for all stages of practice. The principles we’ll explore will be relevant and adaptable to the condition of your particular body and its limitations.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/ .\nDennis has been participating in residential meditation retreats\, and has maintained a daily meditation practice\, in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. 2018 was his 20th year of teaching Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential\, retreat\, educational\, medical\, corporate and community settings. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. If you prefer to make a donation for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account\, click here to DONATE ONLINE. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n09/03/2021 – Registration opens.\n9/22/2021 – Sorry. This retreat is canceled.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - The 3 Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Retreat Theme –\nThe Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\nA Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance. This helps us determine how many people will attend and how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\nTo pay now\, you’ll find at the bottom of this page registration ticket choices to attend via Zoom or attend onsite. If you attend onsite\, you do have the option to pay the registration fee in-person on the day of the retreat or pay online after the retreat starts.\nIf you buy a ticket for onsite attendance you may still attend the retreat via Zoom.\nThe link to attend the retreat via Zoom appears in three places:\n\nThe Zoom link is at the bottom of this page – select the button “Join Retreat Online” to connect to the meeting.\nThe Zoom link is included in the automated email sent with your ticket purchase (email subject is “You have tickets!“).\nThe Zoom link is https://joinconferencing.zoom.us/join\, with Meeting ID: 892 8253 1249 and Passcode: 830142\n\n\nTo give a donation after attending this retreat\, click here.\n\nRetreat Theme: The Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\n\nThe three trainings of the eightfold path are the training in moral integrity (sila)\, the training in meditation (bhavana)\, and the training in wisdom (pañña). They are taught in many places in the Pali Canon\, nowhere more powerfully than in the Samaññaphala Sutta (Digha Nikaya 2). This sutta\, the story of an encounter between the historical Buddha and King Ajatasattu\, contains a survey of the other philosophical traditions of the Buddha’s time\, a summary of the essence of the Buddha’s teachings illustrated with beautiful similes\, and (spoiler alert!) a sad refusal by the King to accept this teaching as the basis for transforming his life. Inspired by two chapters on this sutta (characterized as “almost a Greek tragedy”) in Krishnan Venkatesh’s book “Do You Know Who You Are?” and a book-length essay by Mu Soeng “The Question of King Ajatasattu” (“rightly called one of the most important texts in the Pali Canon”)\, we will explore in depth how we might answer the King’s question reframed for ourselves: what is the fruit of practice\, and what are we willing to do to attain it? This day of practice and dialogue will help deepen our understanding and bring it into our practice and our lives. It will continue the teaching offered on October 14\, although both events stand alone.\nAll are welcome. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. In 2019\, he completed Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n09/13/2021 – Registration opens.\n10/30/2021 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n11/01/2021 – Registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PDT.\n\n \nRegistration Ticket Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Living With\, and Without\, A Separate Self
DESCRIPTION:Year-End One Day Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n Pre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance. This helps us determine how many people will attend and how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n To pay now\, you’ll find at the bottom of this page registration ticket choices to attend via Zoom or attend onsite. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective.\nWe’ll examine the teachings\, psychology and practices that support essential elements of practice that may seem confusing\, contradictory and distant – self\, no-self\, identity\, traumatic identity\, impermanence\, emptiness\, “non-dual” awareness\, transcendence\, karma\, awakening. We’ll explore how these foundational elements relate to\, and fit together into one seamless whole.\nYou’ll have the option of attending the day in person (absent a negative development with COVID) or online by Zoom. Dennis is encouraging as many people as possible to attend in person\, if you feel safe. Look forward to helpful day of practice together.\n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. Stay on the Path!\nWhen we venture out for a hike in nature\, we check first to make sure there is a well-trodden\, reliable path we can follow. A path that will keep us safe and will guide us home at the end of the day. information signs posted along the way are helpful. They may tell us us how far we have gone\, or suggest we stop for a scenic view ahead\, or a warning to stay on the path due to danger ahead. The Buddha too laid out a reliable path that provides guidance for living our lives with ease and safety. It is the Noble Eightfold Path. If we have strayed from the path\, or never really followed the path with conviction\, we may find ourselves confused and perhaps unsure about the value of our lives. The New Year is a good time for a refresher! The Noble Eightfold Path omits nothing\, and nothing is left to chance. The various paths address three different areas of our lives; our deeply held views and the consequences of those views; the truth about how we live our daily lives; and the steps for achieving true freedom through our meditation practice. On this daylong we will review the wisdom found in each pathway. and will also investigate our individual challenges… and which pathway(s) need more focus and effort. \nAll are welcome. \n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Building\, then Transcending\, A Constructive\, Healthy Sense of Self

This over-simplified model leaves out the foundational elements of learning how to build a constructive\, healthy sense of self and how to live in a way that transcends any sense of self. \nThis approach to Buddhist practice provides a larger\, inclusive\, unified view of identity and self that fills life with possibilities\, satisfaction and a sense of belonging. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. \n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. SUMMARY:2022 SIM Residential Retreat with Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for SIM’s Residential Retreat at the beautiful Mercy Center in Auburn\, CA from Sunday\, August 28\, 5:00 PM through Sunday\, September 4\, 2022\, 11:00 AM. When the mind is relaxed and at ease\, this natural awareness can be recognized and integrated into our lives. When we combine a receptive\, kindhearted attitude with relaxed yet diligent effort\, we create the conditions for insight\, wisdom\, and compassion to arise naturally.Through this process\, we see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. As our understanding deepens\, we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. This silent retreat will include instruction in both Insight and Loving-kindness meditation\, meetings with the teachers\, and an optional daily period of mindful movement. It is suitable for both beginning and experienced students of meditation. We encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\n\n\n\nDo you have a regular practice?\n\n\n\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\n\n\n\nHave you sat at a residential retreat before?\n\n\n\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact us\, click here. \n\n\n\nOur retreat teachers this year will be Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. SUMMARY:2022 SIM Residential Retreat with Senior Teacher Greg Scharf and Teacher Neesha Patel

As our understanding deepens\, we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. This silent retreat will include instruction in both Insight and Loving-kindness meditation\, meetings with the teachers\, and an optional daily period of mindful movement. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Is your meditation “working?”
DESCRIPTION:Is your meditation “working?”\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Diane Wilde (click here for biographical details)\n\n\n\nIs your meditation “working?”For a new practitioner as well as a person who has been meditating for some time\, it’s important to periodically evaluate our meditation practice. Perhaps you have fallen into a practice that has become as “habitual” as many other facets of your life. Or perhaps you have stopped your meditation practice altogether. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate the state of your practice through questions such as: Is this the right practice for me? Is the same practice suitable for everyone? Should I adjust my practice periodically? Has my practice lost its “juice” and how do I get it back? Sometimes a minor adjustment makes all the difference and other times an entirely different approach is needed. We will spend the day investigating our practice as well as taking part in a discussion about what each of us individually need to do to allow insight to arise. \n\n\n\nPlease plan to stay for the entire day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - What is Samma Samadhi/Skillful Concentration?
DESCRIPTION:What is Samma Samadhi/Skillful Concentration?\n\n\n\nDaylong Retreat facilitated by Rev. Diane Wilde\, SIM Community Teacher\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nParticipants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. Since your registration choice indicates if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person\, registering early helps us determine how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\n\n\n\nAfter you’ve registered you may later offer a donation in gratitude of the teacher. To offer teacher dana\, visit https://sactoinsight.org/retreat-dana-online/.\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: What is Samma Samadhi/Skillful Concentration?\n\n\n\nRight or Skillful Concentration (samma samadhi) is the last of the Noble Eightfold Path. It can be a very confusing topic. Samadhi is often defined as attaining a state of mind called jhana which means “absorption.” This definition of jhana refers to a mind completely absorbed in concentration. Other interpretations of samadhi ignore jhana completely\, and focus on “insight” or vipassana as all that is needed to “wake up.” Others counter that the development of jhana is crucial for the development of insight. Who is correct? \n\n\n\nIn this daylong\, we’ll discuss the range of teachings in the Pali tradition on the relationship between samadhi\, jhana and insight. We’ll look at controversies that have developed about the interpretations of samadhi and how ultimately\, these various definitions can actually be quite useful as we individually learn what practice works for each of us. \n\n\n\nThe day will be in silence.  Please bring a lunch. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n09/11/2023 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n10/28/2023 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n10/30/2023 – Online registration closes the Monday after the retreat at 11:00 am PST.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Options\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. SUMMARY:7-Night Residential Retreat with Greg Scharf
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation Retreat with Greg Scharf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRetreat Theme: Finding a True Refuge\n\n\n\nIn a world of change and unpredictability\, in times that often feel chaotic and confusing\, where do we look for ease and security? Often\, in our search for a dependable refuge\, we mistakenly turn to that which is essentially unreliable and unable to provide the stability we seek. \n\n\n\nInsight (or Vipassana) meditation is the simple\, direct observation of the mind/body process with relaxed\, open and careful attention. As we connect with our experience from a place of spacious stillness and steadiness\, we learn to meet the changing conditions we encounter with greater ease and balance of mind. As our understanding deepens\, equanimity in the face of change grows\, and we discover a refuge that is to a great extent independent of life’s changing conditions. \n\n\n\nThis retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike and will include meditation instruction\, Dharma talks\, practice meetings with the teacher\, and optional mindful movement. A Meditation retreat is a rare opportunity to take time away from our usual activities for the express purpose of turning inward in order to deepen our understanding of what it actually means to be human. Time on retreat connects us with what we truly value in life and gives us the time & space to deepen our understanding of who & what we really are. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration (Closed)\n\n\n\nThis retreat accommodates 27 registrants. Beginning Saturday\, September 9\, this webpage will accept online registration payments. Before making any payment\, click here to review the terms of use for this website. \n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. We encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so. If needed\, contact the retreat registrar with your request to pay a 50% deposit. \n\n\n\n\n\nOffer a Donation\n\n\n\n\nThanks for Attending the Retreat\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAudio Recordings\n\n\n\nFor a limited time\, talks and meditations recorded during the retreat are available to everyone that attended. To access the audio files\, click here. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of potentially challenging times\, partial scholarships might be available if needed. To request a partial scholarship\, pay a $225 deposit fee after registration opens and before September 30th. Then watch for a follow-up email from the retreat registrar. SIM has a limited number of partial scholarships available based on need. If the $225 deposit payment is currently not possible\, contact the retreat registrar to apply for a scholarship with other options. \n\n\n\nScholarship Donations\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to contribute into the scholarship fund to help someone else be able to afford this special dharma opportunity\, enter the amount you’d like to donate in the DONATE NOW box. Donating into the fund won’t register you for the retreat. \n\n\n\n\n[give_form id=”25463″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\n\n\nCancellations\n\n\n\n\nThrough September 30th\, full refund if requested by this date if someone on the waiting list takes the reservation.\n\n\n\nOn or after October 15th\, deposit will be retained by SIM. Balance may be refundable if the spot is filled by a wait-listed person. Otherwise\, the balance will not be refunded. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on a request demonstrating financial hardship.\n\n\n\n\nSchedule – Summary of Dates\n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Registration opens; online payments accepted.\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request full refund (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Last day to request a scholarship (see scholarship details listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Last day to request refund of balance paid (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nOctober 15 – Registration payment in full due.\n\n\n\nTBD – Registration closes\, date to be announced.\n\n\n\nNovember 12 – The retreat begins (check-in starts at 3:30 PM).\n\n\n\nNovember 19 – The retreat ends (check-out at 11:00 AM).\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nOur priority is to protect the wellbeing of everyone who attends the SIM Annual Retreat. The SIM Board will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and required and recommended safety measures from federal\, State and local health agencies\, and the Mercy Center\, with consideration of our Sangha demographics. \n\n\n\nAt a minimum\, we will require proof of vaccinations and boosters (if eligible) for COVID-19 at least two weeks before the retreat\, along with proof of COVID rapid testing within 24 hours prior to attending and a second rapid test two days into the retreat (SIM will provide tests if needed). \n\n\n\nAdditional protocols will very likely include masking when indoors with others\, and social distancing as space allows. \n\n\n\nSIM will update the protocols to reflect the situation in the summer. \n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here.

You may attend either session or both. \n\n\n\nWhile Thursday evening’s session introduced the first three truths\, Saturday’s daylong retreat will be a deeper dive into the fourth truth\, the path to the end of suffering. As a framework for this exploration\, we will use the three trainings of the path: the training in sila (ethical conduct\, harmonious living)\, the training in samadhi (concentration\, collectedness of mind)\, and the training in pañña (wisdom\, insight\, understanding). Through guided meditation\, short dharmettes\, and discussion\, we will see how these trainings free us from unskillful thoughts\, speech\, and actions\, from obsessive mind states\, and ultimately from dukkha (unsatisfactoriness/vulnerability/suffering) itself. The day will also feature readings from American monk and translator Bhikkhu Bodhi’s latest book\, “Noble Truths\, Noble Path” (Wisdom Publications\, 2023). Bring a lunch and plan to stay all day. \n\n\n\nSummary of Important Dates\n\n\n\n\n01/02/2024 – Registration opens.\n\n\n\n02/24/2024 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\n\n\n02/25/2024 – For registration after the retreat\, send a message to the registrar to arrange payment.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\n\nSelect one of the following registration “ATTEND” buttons to indicate if you’ll be attending via Zoom or in-person. SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat/Workshop - Dennis Warren - When Life Changes
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat/Workshop with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nWhen Life Changes – A One Day Retreat / WorkshopThis one-day retreat / workshop explores the one constant in all our lives – change. \n\n\n\nSome of these changes are sudden. Some gradual. Some big. Some\, at least initially\, small. Changes in relationships\, finances\, jobs\, living circumstances. Changes in capacity – mental\, emotional\, physical. Changes in health and quality of life. Changes in ourselves\, in those we know\, in the world as we have known it. \n\n\n\nOur actual experience of change frequently catches us off guard even when the change itself is anticipated. We feel unprepared\, disoriented\, disorganized. Buddhist practices offer the possibility of being prepared for change\, even when we have no idea what it will be. They offer the possibility of experiencing change as possibility\, rather than primarily as obstacle or problem. \n\n\n\nThis day will explore Buddhist perspectives\, tools and practices that help us work with change large and small. It will involve meditations\, reflections\, dharma talk\, and small and large group discussions. \n\n\n\nThe day is appropriate for all levels of practice experience. Please bring a pen/pencil and paper\, and your own lunch. Plan on staying on-site at the Sacramento Dharma Center all day during the retreat. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center. All participants will attend in-person as the retreat will not be available via Zoom.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration ATTEND buttons shown below. SUMMARY:(Onsite) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Acceptance and Cultivation: the Yin and Yang of Practice
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nAcceptance and Cultivation: the Yin and Yang of PracticeThe progress of meditation practice has its ups and downs\, peaks and valleys\, and plateaus when seemingly “nothing is happening.” Each of these phases requires different skills. Some practices of meditative awareness rely on acceptance and openness\, while others require cultivation and intention. Wisdom is the skill of discerning what is needed in any given moment or phase of practice and how to adjust (or not!). On this daylong retreat\, we will explore different practices of sitting and walking meditation on different points of the spectrum from acceptance to cultivation. There will be plenty of time for practice questions and discussion.Bring a lunch and plan to stay all day. \n\n\n\nAbout This Onsite Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.
