SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Working with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\nWorking with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit\nConceit (“māna” in Pali) is one of the last defilements\, and the most subtle process to fall away as we begin“waking up”. It is much more than a feeling of superiority\, although that is certainly one aspect. Conceit in Buddhism can mean feeling superior\, inferior\, or the same as others. In this daylong retreat\, we will look more deeply at its subtlety through the use meditation\, “thought experiments” as well as informative daily experiences. We may begin to see how deeply integrated conceit is in all of our judgements of ourselves and others. The amount of suffering in our lives is in direct proportion to our inner conceit.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - Resting in Awareness - At Home
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nResting in Awareness – At Home\nAwareness is always accessible\, and it does not require special effort. As contemporary Burmese teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya says\, “Everything you need for understanding to arise is surrounding you in this moment. It is all on your doorstep: family\, friends\, work colleagues\, and any other relationships you may have can all be powerful catalysts in your work of revealing wisdom.” What is difficult is to remember to be aware. With the pandemic limiting our opportunities to practice at retreat centers\, it is more important than ever to remember to bring awareness into all activities.\nIn this simple day of practice\, we will practice sitting\, walking\, and standing meditation wherever we are. Throughout the day\, Rich will offer several options for promoting awareness in any posture or activity. There will also be opportunities for questions and sharing experiences.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. In 2019\, he completed Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. DESCRIPTION:An Online\, Daylong Retreat with visiting Senior Teacher Heather Sundberg\nSuchness: Understanding Conditions\, Responding with Compassion\n\nFrom the perspective of Suchness we understand causes and conditions which lead to suffering and to freedom\, and from that we can connect with what Ajahn Amaro calls ‘the texture of experience’\, opening our hearts with a caring attitude to things as they are.\n\nEnjoy a day of quiet sitting and walking meditation\, which allow our body & mind to settle down and our hearts to open to an inner wisdom. In addition to insight meditation practice\, Heather will offer teachings & guided meditations on the theme\, as well as optional Qi Gong practice & discussion about how to live these teachings in our daily lives.\n\nIn this daylong we will explore this Subtle Characteristic of Suchness from the following perspectives:\n\n Using the Buddha’s teaching to Bahiya as well as the teaching of the Two Arrows\, and teachings on Conditionality.\n Exploring practices from the Thai forest tradition\, including Ajahn Sumedho’s famous teaching ‘It’s like this’.\n Deepening the Heart Practice of Compassion.\n Deepening inner Resiliency through Somatic Practices.\n\nNote there will be a lunch break from Noon to 1:00 pm.\n\n\nHEATHER SUNDBERG has taught insight meditation since 1999\, has completed the Spirit Rock/IMS Teacher Training\, and is currently on the Spirit Rock Teacher’s Council. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Suffering Well
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe Experience and Possibilities of “Suffering Well”\nWe study\, read books\, listen to talks and discuss what it means to practice well and to live well. Learning how to suffer well is a third foundational contemplative and meditative skill. We don’t look at that so often. It may be a foreign idea or counter-intuitive for many of us.\nWhat does it mean to “suffer well”? What is the experience and feeling in the body\, in the mind and in the heart? How does suffering well express itself in our thoughts\, actions and speech? How does it support practicing and living well.\nWe are in a period of enormous transition as a world\, as a culture\, as families\, as individuals\, as spiritual beings. This means lots of suffering – uncertainty\, confusion\, ambiguity\, doubt\, anxiousness\, maybe worse – and significant possibilities. How can understanding and developing the skill of suffering well serve us during this period of change. How can it open up new possibilities for us as practitioners\, in relationships\, and in our understanding what it means to be alive and human on this planet at this moment in history.\nThese are the themes\, and practices which support them\, we’ll explore during this one-day retreat. \n(Pre-registration is required.) \nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is a graduate of the professional trainings in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. You can learn more about Dennis’ background and activities at https://www.denniswarren.net/ .\nDennis has been participating in residential meditation retreats\, and has maintained a daily meditation practice\, in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. 2018 was his 20th year of teaching Insight Meditation and mindfulness practices in residential\, retreat\, educational\, medical\, corporate and community settings. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren (Re-Entry)
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRe-Entry – Maybe a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity\nCalling the process we are all beginning “Re-entry” is misleading. It implies that we are stepping back into what existed before. That isn’t true… psychologically\, emotionally or physically. The pandemic has had us all in a restricted bubble. We have changed\, whether we recognize it or not. The same is true for everyone else. The world is a different place. We are all a little different.\nComing out of this bubble in an awake\, alive and mindful way potentially represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to see\, understand and relate to ourselves\, to others and the world around us in a different\, fresh\, more expansive and healthier way.\nLouis Pasteur was the French chemist and microbiologist whose discoveries relating to vaccination and pasteurization influence our lives to this day. He was fond of saying that “chance favors the prepared mind\,” by which he meant trial\, error\, adaptation and growth. This was also the position of the Historical Buddha – “I know of no other single thing so conducive to satisfaction and happiness than a well-trained mind.”\nDuring this one-day retreat\, we’ll look at the dynamics influencing our re-entry. We’ll reflect on how we can prepare ourselves – intentionally and purposefully – to be more open\, inclusive\, accepting and kind with ourselves and with the host of challenges that await us in 2021 and 2022.\n(Pre-registration is required.) \n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Finding the Right Question
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\n“Finding the Right Question”\nOur search for liberation\, awakening\, liberation\, release from suffering… whatever you wish to call it\, means asking ourselves questions that get to the heart of our unease. Not an easy task when our identities\, reactivity\, judgement and life experiences obscure insight. Finding the right question and being willing to spend time with it in daily life and on the cushion is crucial for getting closer to the goal of our practice… awakening. Not an easy task due to denial and fear of what we might find out about ourselves and our views of others. \nWe will reflect on a variety of questions during this daylong. We will use guided meditation and investigation of our lives through queries and personal written reflections. The simple act of writing has the power to help us encode information and insights. \nBring a small notebook or a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil. \nAll are welcome. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(CANCELED) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:* * * This retreat is canceled. * * *\nOne Day Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRetreat theme: The Body in Question – An Investigation\nThe Body in Question – your body – will be the focus of this one-day retreat. Our time together will involve investigations and experiments in sitting meditation\, common daily movements and active forms of movement – yoga\, Qi Gong\, golf\, dance and may more – as meditation.\nOur body\, and how our body moves\, form core elements of our identity\, our skills and our relationships with other. Being more conscious and purposeful in understanding how to be in the body\, stay in the body and fully experience the body is foundational to contemplative practice and to living fully.\nA key question we’ll examine: How can we help our body and its movements become a more vivid and enriching parts of our contemplative practice and our life whatever its current condition and limitations?\nIt would be helpful to review Dennis’ talk on August 12th entitled “Is Movement Meditation?” (click here) as preparation for this one day.\nThe subject matter of this one day is appropriate for all stages of practice. The principles we’ll explore will be relevant and adaptable to the condition of your particular body and its limitations.\nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - The 3 Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Retreat Theme –\nThe Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\nA Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance. This helps us determine how many people will attend and how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\nTo pay now\, you’ll find at the bottom of this page registration ticket choices to attend via Zoom or attend onsite. If you attend onsite\, you do have the option to pay the registration fee in-person on the day of the retreat or pay online after the retreat starts.\nIf you buy a ticket for onsite attendance you may still attend the retreat via Zoom.\nThe link to attend the retreat via Zoom appears in three places:\n\nThe Zoom link is at the bottom of this page – select the button “Join Retreat Online” to connect to the meeting.\nThe Zoom link is included in the automated email sent with your ticket purchase (email subject is “You have tickets!“).\nThe Zoom link is https://joinconferencing.zoom.us/join\, with Meeting ID: 892 8253 1249 and Passcode: 830142\n\n\nTo give a donation after attending this retreat\, click here.\n\nRetreat Theme: The Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\n\nThe three trainings of the eightfold path are the training in moral integrity (sila)\, the training in meditation (bhavana)\, and the training in wisdom (pañña). They are taught in many places in the Pali Canon\, nowhere more powerfully than in the Samaññaphala Sutta (Digha Nikaya 2). This sutta\, the story of an encounter between the historical Buddha and King Ajatasattu\, contains a survey of the other philosophical traditions of the Buddha’s time\, a summary of the essence of the Buddha’s teachings illustrated with beautiful similes\, and (spoiler alert!) a sad refusal by the King to accept this teaching as the basis for transforming his life. Inspired by two chapters on this sutta (characterized as “almost a Greek tragedy”) in Krishnan Venkatesh’s book “Do You Know Who You Are?” and a book-length essay by Mu Soeng “The Question of King Ajatasattu” (“rightly called one of the most important texts in the Pali Canon”)\, we will explore in depth how we might answer the King’s question reframed for ourselves: what is the fruit of practice\, and what are we willing to do to attain it? This day of practice and dialogue will help deepen our understanding and bring it into our practice and our lives. It will continue the teaching offered on October 14\, although both events stand alone.\nAll are welcome. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Living With\, and Without\, A Separate Self
DESCRIPTION:Year-End One Day Retreat with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\n Pre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective.\nWe’ll examine the teachings\, psychology and practices that support essential elements of practice that may seem confusing\, contradictory and distant – self\, no-self\, identity\, traumatic identity\, impermanence\, emptiness\, “non-dual” awareness\, transcendence\, karma\, awakening. We’ll explore how these foundational elements relate to\, and fit together into one seamless whole.\nYou’ll have the option of attending the day in person (absent a negative development with COVID) or online by Zoom. Dennis is encouraging as many people as possible to attend in person\, if you feel safe. Look forward to helpful day of practice together.\n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. Stay on the Path!\nWhen we venture out for a hike in nature\, we check first to make sure there is a well-trodden\, reliable path we can follow. A path that will keep us safe and will guide us home at the end of the day. information signs posted along the way are helpful. They may tell us us how far we have gone\, or suggest we stop for a scenic view ahead\, or a warning to stay on the path due to danger ahead. The Buddha too laid out a reliable path that provides guidance for living our lives with ease and safety. It is the Noble Eightfold Path. If we have strayed from the path\, or never really followed the path with conviction\, we may find ourselves confused and perhaps unsure about the value of our lives. The New Year is a good time for a refresher! The Noble Eightfold Path omits nothing\, and nothing is left to chance. The various paths address three different areas of our lives; our deeply held views and the consequences of those views; the truth about how we live our daily lives; and the steps for achieving true freedom through our meditation practice. On this daylong we will review the wisdom found in each pathway. and will also investigate our individual challenges… and which pathway(s) need more focus and effort. \nAll are welcome. \n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective. We’ll examine the teachings\, psychology and practices that support this approach to practice. \nAt the moment\, it is unclear if this will be a hybrid event – both Zoom and in person. If possible\, Dennis wants to have in-person attendance and will encourage as many people as possible to attend in person. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. \n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. As our understanding deepens\, we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. This silent retreat will include instruction in both Insight and Loving-kindness meditation\, meetings with the teachers\, and an optional daily period of mindful movement. If registering with partial payment\, watch for follow-up emails a couple of days later which include directions/links to pay the remaining balance via “Invoice”. \n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\nThe registration fee will be $900 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the retreat teachers. The registration fee covers the costs of accommodations\, meals\, and administration. You can opt to pay the fee in full or make a deposit to hold your spot and pay the balance by June 15th. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nWe encourage you to pay the full registration fee if your finances allow you to do so; however\, in recognition of the challenging year many have had\, partial scholarships are available if needed. To request a partial scholarship\, pay a $225 deposit fee after registration opens and before May 20th. Then watch for a follow-up email from the retreat registrar. SIM has a limited number of partial scholarships available based on need. If the $225 deposit payment is currently not possible\, contact the retreat registrar to apply for a scholarship with other options. \n\n\n\nScholarship Donations\n\n\n\nIf you’d like to contribute into the scholarship fund to help someone else be able to afford this special dharma opportunity\, enter the amount you’d like to donate in the box below. Donating into the fund won’t register you for the retreat.[give_form id=”7161″ show_title=”false” show_content=”none” display_style=”reveal”] \n\n\n\nCancellations\n\n\n\n\nThrough May 20th\, full refund if requested by this date.\n\n\n\nMay 21st through June 15th\, deposit will be retained by SIM; balance paid is refundable.\n\n\n\nOn or after June 16th\, deposit will be retained by SIM. Balance may be refundable if the spot is filled by a wait listed person. Otherwise\, the balance will not be refunded. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on request demonstrating financial hardship.\n\n\n\n\nSchedule – Summary of Dates\n\n\n\n\nApril 20\, 2022 – Registration opens; online payments accepted.\n\n\n\nMay 20\, 2022 – Last day to request full refund (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nMay 20\, 2022 – Last day to request a scholarship (see scholarship details listed above).\n\n\n\nJune 15\, 2022 – Last day to request refund of balance paid (see cancellation policy listed above).\n\n\n\nJune 15\, 2022 – Registration payment in full due.\n\n\n\nTBD – Registration closes\, date to be announced.\n\n\n\nAugust 28\, 2022\, 5:00 PM – The retreat begins (check-in starts at 3:30 PM).\n\n\n\nSeptember 4\, 2022\, 11:00 AM – The retreat ends (check-out at 11:00 AM).\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Protocols\n\n\n\nOur priority is to protect the wellbeing of everyone who attends the SIM Annual Retreat. The SIM Board will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and required and recommended safety measures from federal\, State and local health agencies\, and the Mercy Center\, with consideration of our Sangha demographics. \n\n\n\nAt a minimum\, we will require proof of vaccinations and boosters (if eligible) for COVID-19 at least two weeks before the retreat\, along with proof of COVID rapid testing within 24 hours prior to attending and a second rapid test two days into the retreat (SIM will provide tests if needed). \n\n\n\nAdditional protocols will very likely include masking when indoors with others\, and social distancing as space allows. \n\n\n\nSIM will update the protocols to reflect the situation in the summer. \n\n\n\nQuestions for the Registrar?\n\n\n\nIf you need to contact the retreat registrar with any questions\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Audio Dharma\n\n\n\nIf you attending this retreat\, click here to access some recordings of the dharma talks. \n\n\n\nGet Tickets
