SUMMARY:(Cancelled) Half day Retreat - Diane Wilde- Revolution of Mind
DESCRIPTION:An Online\, Half-day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThis retreat is cancelled.\nIt’s a Revolution of the Mind!\nA revolution is taking place in our own minds just as it is taking place in society. The amount of anxiety\, concern\, and fear is beyond anything we have seen before. For many of us\, these past few months in quarantine have opened up our minds to mental experiences which are new to us. Fear of the unknown\, fear of sickness\, fear of societal upheaval. Yet contemporary scientists/neurologists as well as the Buddha\, have said that the mind is capable of contending with these unprecedented times. We’ll practice together and investigate relevant Buddhist teachings as well as neurological studies and techniques for uprooting anxiety and stress. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010. Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nThe Teacher offers the teachings freely in the tradition of the Buddha\, and her livelihood is completely sustained by the generosity of the communities she serves. Dana (donation) for these priceless teachings will be gratefully accepted by the teacher\, giving participants the opportunity to freely engage in the practice of generosity\, the first step toward freedom. You may donate for this event online using a credit card or PayPal account. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/23/2020 – Registration opens.\n06/26/2020 – Registration via this website is closed.\n06/27/2020 – This retreat is cancelled.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. If you are able and interested in further supporting SIM financially\, you have the option of a registration fee of either $25 or $35 dollars. To pay the registration fee online\, use the “Tickets” section at the bottom of this page. Specify the number of people you are registering to this retreat and click the button “Get Tickets”. DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with Ayya Santacitta Bhikkhuni and Rev. Paying attention and incorporating these teachings can change the trajectory of our lives from self-absorption towards more happiness and freedom. How do we do that? She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:(Remote) 2020 SIM Annual Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento Insight Meditation (SIM)\n15th Annual Retreat\n“Keeping our Footing on Unsteady Ground”\nThis is a five day\, online Zoom event with Senior Teacher John Travis\n(Friday\, September 11th at approximately 6 pm through Wednesday\, September 16th by 11 am)\nResidential retreat is widely viewed in the Theravada tradition as an important\, if not essential\, component in the path towards awakening. Residential meditation practice provides an environment that helps us turn inward towards a way of being where we live and act from a place of stillness\, satisfaction\, and kindness. This retreat is designed to deepen practice skills and foster insights into the stages of awakening and their implications for daily life. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nIt is rare for a community sangha to sponsor a regular residential retreat and this year’s retreat will be unusual because we’ll have it online via Zoom. Practicing online together for multiple days\, our individual efforts join together into a powerful force to deepen our practice\, integrate it into our daily lives in our home environment\, and strengthen our connections as a community. This year there will be two options for attending this retreat. See Participation and Registration sections below. \nWhile this retreat is appropriate for both experienced and less experienced meditators\, we encourage you to consider the following questions before registering: \n\nDo  you have a regular practice?\nDo you have a home sangha or group that you sit with?\nHave you sat at a multi-day retreat before?\n\nIf you have questions about whether this retreat is appropriate for you\, please contact the retreat registrar for advise. \nOur retreat teacher this year will be John Travis. \nJohn Travis is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working. \nParticipation\nThis retreat is designed to support those who are able to make this a full-time at home self-retreat\, as well as those who may need to work\, care for family members or do other daily life activities during parts of the rest of their day/evening.\nEveryone is strongly encouraged to attend the 3-4 sessions each day with the Teacher. To view the current retreat schedule\, click here. Full participants will also have one small group check-in with the Teacher. \nFor those with uncertain work or travel schedules\, there are a limited number of spaces available to audit the retreat. Auditing does not include the small group check-in with the Teacher. If you require this accommodation\, select the Ticket option “Auditing“. \nCost\nThe registration fee will be $100 with an opportunity to later make a donation to support the teacher\, John Travis. \n \nRegistration\nNote: If this retreat is full (you’ll see a message SOLD OUT)\, there’s a good chance you may still be able to attend since people’s plans change and there will likely be some cancellations. Proceed with the registration process to add your name to the wait list and as soon as a spot is open\, we’ll notify you.  If you don’t get into the retreat\, we’ll refund your deposit. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Working with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\nWorking with “Mana”\, the Pali Word for Conceit\nConceit (“māna” in Pali) is one of the last defilements\, and the most subtle process to fall away as we begin“waking up”. It is much more than a feeling of superiority\, although that is certainly one aspect. Conceit in Buddhism can mean feeling superior\, inferior\, or the same as others. In this daylong retreat\, we will look more deeply at its subtlety through the use meditation\, “thought experiments” as well as informative daily experiences. We may begin to see how deeply integrated conceit is in all of our judgements of ourselves and others. The amount of suffering in our lives is in direct proportion to our inner conceit.\nAll are welcome. (Pre-registration is required.) \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (aka Boundless Freedom Project) in 2010 and has been a prison chaplain for 18 years. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at the Sacramento Dharma Center. DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nResting in Awareness – At Home\nAwareness is always accessible\, and it does not require special effort. As contemporary Burmese teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya says\, “Everything you need for understanding to arise is surrounding you in this moment. It is all on your doorstep: family\, friends\, work colleagues\, and any other relationships you may have can all be powerful catalysts in your work of revealing wisdom.” What is difficult is to remember to be aware. With the pandemic limiting our opportunities to practice at retreat centers\, it is more important than ever to remember to bring awareness into all activities.\nIn this simple day of practice\, we will practice sitting\, walking\, and standing meditation wherever we are. Throughout the day\, Rich will offer several options for promoting awareness in any posture or activity. There will also be opportunities for questions and sharing experiences.\nAll are welcome. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren - Suffering Well
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThe Experience and Possibilities of “Suffering Well”\nWe study\, read books\, listen to talks and discuss what it means to practice well and to live well. Learning how to suffer well is a third foundational contemplative and meditative skill. We don’t look at that so often. It may be a foreign idea or counter-intuitive for many of us.\nWhat does it mean to “suffer well”? What is the experience and feeling in the body\, in the mind and in the heart? How does suffering well express itself in our thoughts\, actions and speech? How does it support practicing and living well.\nWe are in a period of enormous transition as a world\, as a culture\, as families\, as individuals\, as spiritual beings. This means lots of suffering – uncertainty\, confusion\, ambiguity\, doubt\, anxiousness\, maybe worse – and significant possibilities. How can understanding and developing the skill of suffering well serve us during this period of change. How can it open up new possibilities for us as practitioners\, in relationships\, and in our understanding what it means to be alive and human on this planet at this moment in history.\nThese are the themes\, and practices which support them\, we’ll explore during this one-day retreat. \n(Pre-registration is required.) \nDENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren (Re-Entry)
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nRe-Entry – Maybe a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity\nCalling the process we are all beginning “Re-entry” is misleading. It implies that we are stepping back into what existed before. That isn’t true… psychologically\, emotionally or physically. The pandemic has had us all in a restricted bubble. We have changed\, whether we recognize it or not. The same is true for everyone else. The world is a different place. We are all a little different.\nComing out of this bubble in an awake\, alive and mindful way potentially represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to see\, understand and relate to ourselves\, to others and the world around us in a different\, fresh\, more expansive and healthier way.\nLouis Pasteur was the French chemist and microbiologist whose discoveries relating to vaccination and pasteurization influence our lives to this day. He was fond of saying that “chance favors the prepared mind\,” by which he meant trial\, error\, adaptation and growth. This was also the position of the Historical Buddha – “I know of no other single thing so conducive to satisfaction and happiness than a well-trained mind.”\nDuring this one-day retreat\, we’ll look at the dynamics influencing our re-entry. We’ll reflect on how we can prepare ourselves – intentionally and purposefully – to be more open\, inclusive\, accepting and kind with ourselves and with the host of challenges that await us in 2021 and 2022.\n(Pre-registration is required.) \n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. SUMMARY:(Remote) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Finding the Right Question
DESCRIPTION:An online\, One Day Retreat with SIM Community Teacher\, Rev. Diane Wilde\n“Finding the Right Question”\nOur search for liberation\, awakening\, liberation\, release from suffering… whatever you wish to call it\, means asking ourselves questions that get to the heart of our unease. Not an easy task when our identities\, reactivity\, judgement and life experiences obscure insight. Finding the right question and being willing to spend time with it in daily life and on the cushion is crucial for getting closer to the goal of our practice… awakening. Not an easy task due to denial and fear of what we might find out about ourselves and our views of others. \nWe will reflect on a variety of questions during this daylong. We will use guided meditation and investigation of our lives through queries and personal written reflections. The simple act of writing has the power to help us encode information and insights. \nBring a small notebook or a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil. \nAll are welcome. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:(CANCELED) Daylong Retreat - Dennis Warren

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - The 3 Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Retreat Theme –\nThe Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\nA Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\nHybrid events can be attended via Zoom or in-person at the Sacramento Dharma Center.\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance. This helps us determine how many people will attend and how many people the meditation room should accommodate.\nTo pay now\, you’ll find at the bottom of this page registration ticket choices to attend via Zoom or attend onsite. If you attend onsite\, you do have the option to pay the registration fee in-person on the day of the retreat or pay online after the retreat starts.\nIf you buy a ticket for onsite attendance you may still attend the retreat via Zoom.\nThe link to attend the retreat via Zoom appears in three places:\n\nThe Zoom link is at the bottom of this page – select the button “Join Retreat Online” to connect to the meeting.\nThe Zoom link is included in the automated email sent with your ticket purchase (email subject is “You have tickets!“).\nThe Zoom link is https://joinconferencing.zoom.us/join\, with Meeting ID: 892 8253 1249 and Passcode: 830142\n\n\nTo give a donation after attending this retreat\, click here.\n\nRetreat Theme: The Three Trainings: A Question\, a Dialogue\, and a Choice\n\nThe three trainings of the eightfold path are the training in moral integrity (sila)\, the training in meditation (bhavana)\, and the training in wisdom (pañña). They are taught in many places in the Pali Canon\, nowhere more powerfully than in the Samaññaphala Sutta (Digha Nikaya 2). This sutta\, the story of an encounter between the historical Buddha and King Ajatasattu\, contains a survey of the other philosophical traditions of the Buddha’s time\, a summary of the essence of the Buddha’s teachings illustrated with beautiful similes\, and (spoiler alert!) a sad refusal by the King to accept this teaching as the basis for transforming his life. Inspired by two chapters on this sutta (characterized as “almost a Greek tragedy”) in Krishnan Venkatesh’s book “Do You Know Who You Are?” and a book-length essay by Mu Soeng “The Question of King Ajatasattu” (“rightly called one of the most important texts in the Pali Canon”)\, we will explore in depth how we might answer the King’s question reframed for ourselves: what is the fruit of practice\, and what are we willing to do to attain it? This day of practice and dialogue will help deepen our understanding and bring it into our practice and our lives. It will continue the teaching offered on October 14\, although both events stand alone.\nAll are welcome. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. This one day will be a relaxed\, practical\, relevant look at our lives and practices from this perspective.\nWe’ll examine the teachings\, psychology and practices that support essential elements of practice that may seem confusing\, contradictory and distant – self\, no-self\, identity\, traumatic identity\, impermanence\, emptiness\, “non-dual” awareness\, transcendence\, karma\, awakening. We’ll explore how these foundational elements relate to\, and fit together into one seamless whole.\nYou’ll have the option of attending the day in person (absent a negative development with COVID) or online by Zoom. Dennis is encouraging as many people as possible to attend in person\, if you feel safe. Look forward to helpful day of practice together.\n DENNIS WARREN is SIM’s Founding Teacher and has been teaching mindfulness\, meditation and contemplative practices since 1998. He recently completed his 11th year as a Volunteer Clinical Professor in Mindfulness in the Division of Pain Medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is certified as a Mindfulness Teacher\, Professional Level (CMT-P)\, by the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. He also is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Medication Center’s Dharma leaders training program. In 2007 and 2014\, Dennis led month long pilgrimages and moving retreats in Thailand\, India and Nepal. A third is being planned for late 2021.\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. Stay on the Path!\nWhen we venture out for a hike in nature\, we check first to make sure there is a well-trodden\, reliable path we can follow. A path that will keep us safe and will guide us home at the end of the day. information signs posted along the way are helpful. They may tell us us how far we have gone\, or suggest we stop for a scenic view ahead\, or a warning to stay on the path due to danger ahead. The Buddha too laid out a reliable path that provides guidance for living our lives with ease and safety. It is the Noble Eightfold Path. If we have strayed from the path\, or never really followed the path with conviction\, we may find ourselves confused and perhaps unsure about the value of our lives. The New Year is a good time for a refresher! The Noble Eightfold Path omits nothing\, and nothing is left to chance. The various paths address three different areas of our lives; our deeply held views and the consequences of those views; the truth about how we live our daily lives; and the steps for achieving true freedom through our meditation practice. On this daylong we will review the wisdom found in each pathway. and will also investigate our individual challenges… and which pathway(s) need more focus and effort. \nAll are welcome. \n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. Boundless friendliness (aka “lovingkindness”)\, compassion\, sympathetic joy\, and equanimity – known together as the Brahmaviharas – can be strengthened by formal practices taught by the Historical Buddha and later Buddhist commentators. For this day of practice\, we will touch briefly on the role of these heart practices in supporting concentration and insight\, then practice together using guided meditations\, silent sitting meditation\, and walking meditation. We will also reflect on their role in daily life\, including how to choose the practice appropriate to a given situation. \n\n RICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. This awareness allows us to open to and connect with the truth of each moment. \n\n\n\nAs we gain confidence in the mind’s ability to recognize this natural awareness we begin to release the burden of trying to control\, manipulate\, or fix experience so that it meets our ideas of the way it should be\, and relax into the truth of the way it actually is. \n\n\n\nWe start to see directly for ourselves what leads to well-being and freedom and what leads to suffering\, both in our own life and in the world around us. Through this process we begin to live our lives from a place of greater balance\, integrity\, confidence\, and connection. \n\n\n\nThe teacher might also lead an optional session of mindful movement – based on QiGong. \n\n\n\nGREG SCHARF\, an Insight Meditation Society guiding teacher\, has practiced with Western and Asian teachers in the Theravada tradition since 1992. He has been teaching residential retreats since 2007\, including the annual Three-Month Retreat at IMS. Greg’s love of nature and the outdoors deeply informs both his practice and teaching. \n\n\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
