SUMMARY:Bilingual Day-long Retreat with Andrea Castillo and Rich Howard
DESCRIPTION:The Five Spiritual Faculties/Las Cinco Facultades Espirituales \nIn this daylong\, we will explore the Five Spiritual Faculties through brief talks\, exercises\, and discussion. These qualities – faith (confidence)\, energy (effort)\, mindfulness\, concentration\, and wisdom – support our intention to be freed from suffering. They are pragmatic skills that can be developed and implemented in every day life as well as formal meditation. \nThe talks will be in English; discussion groups will be in Spanish (hosted by Andrea) and English (hosted by Rich). There will also be periods of silent meditation and mindful movement. Bring a potluck lunch item from your culture to share and plan to stay on the Sacramento Dharma Center (SDC) property to make the most of this day. There will be an opportunity to offer dana to the teacher. \nWe aspire to welcome all to this day of community and practice\, including the human varieties of gender identity\, sexual orientation\, cultural and ethnic background\, family situation\, and citizenship or immigration status. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:“Blowin’ in the Wind”: The Eight Worldly Winds are “the way of the world”. Only equanimity brings balance.\n Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Rev. Diane Wilde \n \nEquanimity is a protection from the “eight worldly winds”: praise and blame\, success and failure\, pleasure and pain\, fame and disrepute. Becoming attached to or excessively elated with success\, praise\, fame or pleasure can be a set-up for suffering when the winds of life change direction\, which is inevitable. \nThe practice of equanimity is one of the most sublime emotions of Buddhist practice. It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love. While some may think of equanimity as dry neutrality or cool aloofness\, mature equanimity produces a radiance and warmth of being. \nYet when we are actually entangled in one of the eight worldly winds\, equanimity often seems a practice that is beyond our ability. At this daylong retreat\, we will discuss the teachings on — and practices that develop equanimity — as well as learning from each other as we share our own experiences\, both skillful and unskillful\, with the eight worldly winds. \nThe day will include gentle mindful movement\, periods of sitting and walking\, a Dharma discussion and sharing. \nPlease bring your lunch.  \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010.  Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:The Art & Science of Letting It Be\nA Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde \nGrasping is not something done by the self\, but rather the self is something created by grasping. \n“What” are we letting be? What does it mean when we just let things be? Do we accept without concern the state of the world\, cruelty\, climate change\, misogyny\, racism\, etc? Perhaps we are more precise when we say “letting it be” means not adding onto the already cumbersome\, suffering self-identity that we carry around. \nToday’s daylong will address the issues that present themselves when we practice “letting it be”\, along with periods of meditation and mindful movement. \nPlease bring a vegetarian dish to share. Along with sharing with each other\, we will offer Ayya Santacitta her meal of the day. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:2018 SIM Residential Retreat
DESCRIPTION:SIM Residential Retreat with John Travis – Friday\, September 7 through Friday\, 12:00 Noon\, September 14\, 2018 \nJohn Travis\, another of SIM’s Senior Teachers who has taught many of our retreats in the past\, has graciously volunteered to teach for us again this year.  SIM is very grateful to John for his willingness to step in and lead this retreat in place of Steve Armstrong. \nFrom Effort to Ease\nThis seven-night retreat in a forest retreat grounds just outside Foresthill\, California in the Sierra Nevada foothills is suitable for both new and experienced meditators. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nJohn will emphasize the simple discipline of walking and sitting.\nResting with the good heart and unruffled mind.\nSeeing that when there is great ease there is also effortless freedom. \nBuddha emphasized over and over that it takes effort to follow the path of Dharma.\nYet the ultimate result is about the nature of ease.\nWe use effort to see into the nature of a fearful and restless mind/heart.\nThen the fundamentals of insight:\n– relaxing in the deepest recesses of our psyche\n– diminishing the power of anxiousness and dis-ease.\nUltimately finding its own good heart and relaxed mind. \nJOHN TRAVIS is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working.    More…  \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nCost\nWe’ve worked very hard to keep cost down. Registration fees are substantially lower than previous years. You can select from two different registration fee levels:     Regular: $700.00       Donor Level:  $775.00\nBoth levels cover the costs of accommodations\, meals and administration. Donor level registration reduces overall retreat costs and supports scholarship assistance for participants facing special financial demands. \nRegistration\n\nPriority Registration including $400.00 deposit for those attending Steve’s January one day retreat opens January 25 and closes February 15.\nOpen Registration including $400.00 deposit for those who did not attend Steve’s January one day retreat opens February 16. You may\, however\, register and pay the $400.00 deposit as soon as January 27. Such registrations will be accepted beginning February 16 based on date of registration order.\n\nRegistration fees do not cover any financial support for the retreat teacher. An opportunity will be provided at the end of the retreat for voluntary donations for the teacher. Upon registration\, you will receive a confirming email and a participant package of documents approximately 1 month prior to the retreat. \nTo register to the retreat\, or to include your name on the wait list\, or to pay the retreat deposit\, or to pay any remaining balance of registration fees\, simply click the orange “Register” button. \n\n \nCancellations\n\nUp to June 5\, full refund.\nAfter June 5 and up to July 15\, $400 deposit will be retained by SIM.\nAfter July 15\, no refunds will be given. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on application demonstrating financial hardship.\n\nDana\nIf you’re attending the retreat and would like to offer a retreat donation by credit card\, click here. \nContact the Registrar\nFor more information or for questions\, contact the retreat registrar using the form below: \n[contact-form to=”registrar@sactoinsight.org\, website@sactoinsight.org” subject=”To REGISTRAR: Residential Retreat with J. He left no heirs — no recommended teachers\, but rather advised those gathered around him to depend on the Dhamma itself. \nBecause of this last teaching\, practitioners read\, study\, attend retreats\, come to regular weekly sittings and attempt to understand the Dharma in order to cultivate that inner\, wise compassionate teacher. We hope that our “inner-teacher” is the one who always takes the right action\, in thought word and deed. And yet\, for most of us\, we continually question ourselves\, our practice and our motives. Today we will have a conversation about becoming our own teacher\, and methods for assessing how we are doing and how to begin trusting ourselves and our practice… no matter where we are on the path. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n08/29/2018 – Registration opens.\n10/26/2018 – Registration via this website closed at 8:00 pm. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard
DESCRIPTION:Gratitude\, Forgiveness\, and Gratitude\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n“Gratitude is thankfulness taken to the next level” says Betsy Henry\, aka Zen Mama. In this day combining silent practice with group discussion\, we will begin and end by cultivating gratitude in the context of our awareness practice. In between\, we will use guided meditations developed by Dennis Warren to move through forgiveness for ourselves and others. This practice allows us to be fully human and to let go of old holding patterns. We may even find a way to be grateful for past hurts. \nPlease bring your lunch and dress in layers for outside walking. \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. His area of interest is bringing meditative awareness into everyday life. He participated in SIM’s 2007 India Pilgrimage and is a graduate of SIM’s second Practice Development and Leadership (PDL) program. He served on the Board from 2010 until 2015\, the last two years as president. He was one of the SIM representatives to the Inter-Sangha Coordinating Committee\, predecessor to the Sacramento Dharma Center Board\, which now runs our shared space for Buddhist sanghas in Sacramento. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Africa in the 1970s and is fluent in Spanish. His teachers are Dennis Warren\, Tony Bernhard\, and Steve Armstrong. Rich completed online courses with Steve on the Abhidhamma (the Buddhist psychology) and the Manual of Insight. He took Gil Fronsdal’s online course on the Majjhima Nikaya (Middle-length Discourses of the Buddha). His interest in the environment led him to the One Small Planet training with Kerry Nelson and the Ecosattva training with One Earth Sangha. In 2018\, he completed a 10-month Dhamma Awareness Training with Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters called Touching the Earth. He is currently enrolled in Meg Gawler’s 8-month course Preparing the Ground for Samadhi. \n\nFlyer (.pdf) Daylong Retreat Nov 2018\n\nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Anew\nA One Day Retreat– with Sim’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\nThis will be a relaxed day of practice involving alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation\, movement and discussion. We’ll explore what it means to “look in the right place” and “look the right way” when trying to work with challenges like doubt\, confusion\, restlessness\, worry and anxiety. We’ll do this through trying different approaches to experiencing things directly\, rather than intellectually. We’ll engage in some thoughtful reflection on the how the choices and decisions we make in dealing with these core life challenges shape not just our own lives\, and but impact the lives of those around us. \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Not clinging to self-identity
DESCRIPTION:Not clinging to self-identity\nA One Day Retreat– with SIM’s Community Teacher Diane Wilde\nNot clinging to Self-identity is the first “marker” on the path to liberation — and could be divided into both exterior and interior ‘processes’. Our exterior self-identity fixates on how we need to be seen by acquaintances and strangers with our predefined narrative. We want our “specialness” to be recognized. Our interior self-identity is a confusing contrivance which is constantly changing\, re-evaluating and re-constructing itself. In fact\, our mutating interior self-identity causes even more suffering than the outward modality in which we face the world. In contemporary terms\, working with self-identity might be defined as\, learning how to not take ourselves so seriously. At our daylong we will learn from traditional Buddhist teachings\, as well as contemporary teachers\, how to start releasing this bag of tricks that ultimately makes no sense at all. We may even begin to see the truth that clinging to self-identity is ultimately the source of our suffering… and begin to let go. \nOur day will be mostly in silence except for periods of discussion/Dhamma talk. \nPlease bring a lunch and if possible\, your own plates\, cups and utensils. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - The Five Daily Recollections
DESCRIPTION:The Five Daily Recollections\nA One Day Retreat– with SIM’s Community Teacher Rev. Diane Wilde\nThe Buddha advised his followers to reflect on five topics daily: aging\, sickness\, death\, separation form those we love\, and our own karma. The surprising result from this practice is paradoxical… spending more time with these concepts\, rather than continually creating diversions to avoid “thinking about something unpleasant”\, causes us to live with more ease and equanimity. Neurologically\, with avoidance we pay the price. Resistance causes greater and greater anxiety and tension… often culminating in painful physical and mental manifestations. We will investigate any resistance we might have to one — or all of these five recollections — and how to use these reflections as a benefit for our daily mindfulness and meditation practice. \nIf the weather is nice\, we may spend some time outside. Bring a blanket to sit on\, or a folding chair. Please bring your lunch. \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Walt Opie - Cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening\nA One Day Retreat with visiting Teacher Walt Opie\nAccording to Ven. Analayo\, the seven awakening factors provide the conditions conducive to awakening. These factors require a sequential building up as well as a balancing in our meditation practice. And when we do this\, as Ven. Analayo says\, “Just as a river inclines and flows towards the ocean\, so the awakening factors incline towards Nibbana.” \nWe will spend this day of practice exploring these seven important factors in depth and looking at how they build upon each other sequentially. The first factor is mindfulness (sati)\, so we will examine how one firmly establishes mindfulness\, which the Buddha stated is always useful\, in every situation. \nWalt recently completed a retreat with Ven. Analayo and will offer lessons learned both on retreat and in further study of the teachings on the seven factors. There will be sitting and walking meditation periods with guided instructions\, along with dharma talks and time for questions and discussion. \nAll are welcome. Come for all day or for a portion of the day. Please bring your lunch. \nWALT OPIE was first introduced to insight meditation in 1993 at Spirit Rock and began attending regular residential retreats in 2005. He is a graduate of both the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders’ (CDL4) training program and the Sati Center Buddhist Chaplaincy program. He has led sitting groups for people in recovery since 2011. Walt also serves as a volunteer chaplain with Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) at Solano state prison in Vacaville\, CA. SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat - Rich Howard - a Sutta Study Day
DESCRIPTION:The Life and Teachings of the Buddha – a Sutta Study Day\nDaylong Retreat with SIM Community Teacher Rich Howard\n\nEvent Flyer (.pdf format)\n\nThe study of the original texts is considered an important complement to our meditation\, reflection\, and daily life practices\, and it has been a while since we offered a sutta study day at SIM. Each participant in this daylong class will receive a booklet called “The Life and Teachings of the Buddha: An Introductory Sutta Study Guide\,” written by former SIM Community Mentor Dr. Jeff Hardin\, provided with Jeff’s permission and through his generosity. Jeff has sent us 30 copies of the third edition\, so it is especially important to register in advance to ensure that we have enough copies for everyone*. We will use the booklet to move through an introduction to the Pali canon and its historical context\, the life of the Buddha\, the first two discourses of the Buddha (which include the Four Noble Truths and the Five Aggregates)\, and some of the other fundamental teachings of our tradition such as the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and Dependent Origination. Our purpose is best expressed by these words from Jeff’s Introduction: Ultimately\, it is my wish that the study of these teachings be not solely an academic exercise\, but rather that they be investigated\, reflected upon\, meditated with and put into practice within one’s life with the intention of assisting all living beings to awaken to a life free from suffering. \nThere will be some sitting and walking practice\, but this will primarily be a study day. Bring a lunch and plan to stay on site all day. \n* [The second edition of the booklet is available as a pdf through the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies at this link: https://media.audiodharma.org/documents/Sutta-Study-Guide.pdf (please consider offering dana to the Sati Center if you download it).] \nRICH HOWARD has been an active practitioner and volunteer at SIM since 2004. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events.
