SUMMARY:Day-long with SIM Founding Teacher\, Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 24\, 8:30-4:30 pm. Daylong Retreat with Dennis Warren\, SIM Founding Instructor. \nTHE ROLE OF THE “BRAHMA VIHARAS” IN AN INTEGRATED PATH OF PRACTICE \nThe Brahma Viharas – loving kindness\, compassion\, sympathetic joy & equanimity – are what we would call the “heart” qualities in Buddhist practice. We frequently understand these as powerful states of mind that have healing qualities and can act as antidotes to negative mind states. What is not so often clearly understood is their foundational role in an integrated path of practice. \nThis one day retreat will explore the nature of these four significant heart practices and how they are essential to a mature and integrated spiritual practice. \nPlease bring a lunch and plan on staying on-site all day. A microwave and refrigerator are available.

SUMMARY:Day-long with Visiting Teacher\, Heather Sundberg
DESCRIPTION:Topic:  Equanimity: Freedom from Hope & Fear \n** This is daylong one of two\, which can be attended separately or together. The second daylong is scheduled for November 19th\, hosted by SBMG. \n“How do I respond wisely to the changing conditions of my life and the world? \n“How do I find Equanimity in the middle of hoping things will be OK & fearing they won’t be OK?” \nEquanimity is the Balance of the Non-Reactive mind & heart\, grounded in Wisdom\, which supports a deep Caring and leads to an Appropriate Response. The quality of Equanimity allows us to be less reactive\, more compassionate and wise in the face of the underlying conditioned patterns of Hope & Fear. In this daylong we will identify and investigate these underlying patterns\, how they manifest in our minds/lives\, and examine what it means to have a heart open in the midst of all things. Teachings and practices will focus on developing the qualities of embodied groundedness\, spaciousness\, mindfulness\, equanimity\, and lovingkindness. \nEnjoy a day of quiet sitting and walking meditation\, which allow our minds to settle down\, and our hearts to open to an inner wisdom. In addition to insight meditation practice\, Heather will guide Equanimity Practices through sitting meditation\, somatic practices to help settle and discharge reactivity\, teachings\, simple movement practice and plenty of discussion about how to live with increasing wisdom based on the teachings. \nHeather Sundberg has taught insight meditation since 1999 and has completed the Spirit Rock/IMS Teacher Training. Beginning her own meditation practice in her late teens\, for the last 25 years\, Heather has studied with senior teachers in the Insight Meditation (Vipassana) and Tibetan (Vajrayana) traditions and has sat 1-3 months of retreat a year for almost 20 years. Between 2010- 2015 she spent a cumulative one-year in study\, practice\, and pilgrimage in Asia. Since 2011\, she has been a Teacher at Mountain Stream Meditation Center and sister communities in the Sierra Foothills\, and also teaches nationally\, especially at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. For more information about Heather visit heathersundberg.com or www.mtstream.org.   \nDana (donation) The Teacher offers the teachings freely in the tradition of the Buddha\, and her livelihood is completely sustained by the generosity of the communities she serves. Dana (donation) for these priceless teachings will be gratefully accepted by the teacher\, giving participants the opportunity to freely engage in the practice of generosity\, the first step toward freedom.

SUMMARY:Day-long with SIM Community Mentor\, Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:Gratitude: the easiest practice of all! \nGratitude is the sweetest of all the practices for living the dharma in daily life and the most easily cultivated\, requiring the least effort for what is gained in return. It is a very powerful form of mindfulness practice\, particularly for those who habitually look for what is wrong in a situation or person.  We will investigate the causes and conditions that cause gratitude and gratitude’s healing qualities. \nWe will start the day with gentle mindful movement\, with periods of sitting and walking leaving time for discussion.

SUMMARY:New Year’s Eve Day Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:Finding Balance In The New America \nThe landscape of American society and politics is in the process of significant change. Many of us find this period of transition confusing\, troubling\, destabilizing. The future seems so uncertain. What do we do? \nThis one day retreat\, with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\, will end 2016\, and begin 2017\, with an exploration of how we cannot just survive\, but engage and thrive in this new environment. It will take all of our dharmic skills\, as well as our creativity\, engagement and the support of our community. During this one day retreat\, we’ll rest\, practice together in silence\, share our common distress\, set a number of themes in a dharma talk\, and work with questions and answers. An important part of the day will involve examining our common dilemma and looking at how we can mobilize our resources to take care of ourselves\, our families\, our community and our country in 2017. Bring a lunch and plan on staying on-site all day\, including the lunch period. \nYour RSVP will help our volunteers plan and setup the event space appropriately. \n Scroll down to RSVP to the event.

SUMMARY:Day-long Retreat with Visiting Teacher\, Amma Thanasanti
DESCRIPTION:Event registration requested\nFrom Separation to Seamless Reality \nBuddhist teachings emphasize the link between dukkha\, an inner dissatisfaction that keeps us from enjoying life and the delusive view of the self that we are separate from others. During this meditation day\, we will explore the conceptual proliferation that generates the sense of self and turn towards the fullness\, peace and potential that is our ever-present nature. Ending conceptual proliferation reveals a seamless reality at the heart of everything and fundamentally changes our way of being and living. The day will be informed by mindful investigation of our direct experience\, and framed within teachings on emptiness\, pervasive awareness and love. \nLunch will be a potluck. Please bring a non-meat dish as well as your own plate\, napkin\, and eating utensils. Offerings will be made to Amma. (Amma welcomes plenty of vegetables\, eggs\, cottage cheese and foods low in carbohydrates\, low inflammation\, and gluten free. She tries to avoid rice or other grains\, potatoes and other nightshades\, and gluten.) \nThe daylong will be dana only. We are sharing travel and lodging expenses with SBMG\, so cost should be minimal. Your RSVP will help our volunteers plan and setup the event space appropriately. \n(Amma) Thanasanti Bhikkhuni was born in California. She was first introduced to Buddhism and insight meditation in 1979 in a class taught by Jack Engler. From that time she consciously committed to awakening and envisioned living her life as a nun. After completing a BA in Biology from UC Santa Cruz\, she worked as an analytical chemist. In 1987 she went on a pilgrimage to India\, Nepal and Thailand to meet Dipa Ma\, HIs Holiness Dalai Lama\, Ajahn Chah\, and Ajahn Buddhadasa. She joined the comunity of nuns living at both Amaravati and Chithurst Buddhist Monasteries in England. She received ordination in 1991. As part of her monastic life she has spent extensive time in retreat in the remote bush of Australia. She founded Awakening Truth whose mission is to combine Forest traditions teachings with modern teachings on integration to allow greater capacity to meet what is arising in ourselves\, our relationships and the world. Eventually\, she aims to create a Bhikkhuni training based on these principles. In August 2010\, after 19 years of being a nun\, she formally joined the Bhikkhuni Sangha at Aranya Bodhi Forest Hermitage\, Sonoma CA\, in the first Theravada Bhikkhuni ordination to be conducted in North America. Ayya Tathaaloka is her preceptor. She blends rigor with gentle loving encouragement to find your own way – finding a balance between fierce holding of the Dhamma and compassion\, tenderness\, humor and empowerment. Currently she is based at the Shakti Vihara hermitage in Santa Rosa\, California as a solitary alms mendicant nun where her time is interspersed between writing\, teaching\, time meditating in the nearby Annadale State Park and caring for her elderly Mom\, Marley Fein. \n Scroll down to RSVP/Register to the event.

DESCRIPTION:“The most difficult person in your life is your best teacher…”  The Dalai Lama\nDay-long Retreat with SIM Community Mentor\, Diane Wilde. For a biography of Diane Wilde\, click here. \nAlong with periods of walking and meditation\, we will spend time investigating the “difficult person” in our lives through guided meditation and discussion.  When practicing metta (boundless friendliness)\, this person is traditionally defined as the “enemy.” Our goal with metta practice is to feel a sense of benevolence even to him or her!  Quite a goal and what a relief when it actually happens!\nPlease bring your lunch.

DESCRIPTION:Day-long Retreat on Earth Day with SIM Community Mentor\, Rich Howard. \nThe Buddha touched the Earth as witness to his awakening. He encouraged meditating under trees. SUMMARY:*Day-long Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher\, Dennis Warren
DESCRIPTION:Day-long Retreat with SIM Founding Teacher\, Dennis Warren. For a biography of Dennis Warren\, click here. \nAttention & Mindful – An Exploration\nMindfulness is sometimes described as non-judgmental “bare” attention. As helpful as this general description may be\, it tends to cloud the fact that there is a significant difference between attention and mindfulness. They play separate and distinct roles in practice. And\, most importantly\, it gives no hint of the reality that attention and mindfulness are both purposeful in Buddhist practice. In a period of time when both of these terms are been uncoupled from their historical Buddhist meanings\, what do they mean for each of us as 21st century\, urban practitioners? \nThis will be a day of practice\, reflection\, experimentation and investigation: \n\n          What is the functional difference between attention and mindfulness?\n          What are we supposed to be paying attention to and being mindful of?\n          What does it mean that attention and mindfulness are purposeful in Buddhist practice?\n\nWhat is the relationship between the answers to these questions and the underlying psychology of the historical Buddha? \nWe’ll practice together inside the dharma hall\, and outside under the trees. The retreat format makes it appropriate for both experienced practitioners\, and those new to practice. \n\nAdditional Dana\n \n[give_form id=”4149″ show_title=”false” show_content=”above” display_style=”reveal”]

SUMMARY:*Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:“Blowin’ in the Wind”: The Eight Worldly Winds are “the way of the world”. Only equanimity brings balance.\n Daylong Retreat with SIM Community Mentor Rev. Diane Wilde \n \nEquanimity is a protection from the “eight worldly winds”: praise and blame\, success and failure\, pleasure and pain\, fame and disrepute. Becoming attached to or excessively elated with success\, praise\, fame or pleasure can be a set-up for suffering when the winds of life change direction\, which is inevitable. \nThe practice of equanimity is one of the most sublime emotions of Buddhist practice. It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love. While some may think of equanimity as dry neutrality or cool aloofness\, mature equanimity produces a radiance and warmth of being. \nYet when we are actually entangled in one of the eight worldly winds\, equanimity often seems a practice that is beyond our ability. At this daylong retreat\, we will discuss the teachings on — and practices that develop equanimity — as well as learning from each other as we share our own experiences\, both skillful and unskillful\, with the eight worldly winds. \nThe day will include gentle mindful movement\, periods of sitting and walking\, a Dharma discussion and sharing. \nPlease bring your lunch.  \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. In 2001 she was a founding member of Sacramento Insight Meditation. She founded Buddhist Pathways Prison Project (BP3) in 2010.  Since 2003\, she has been a BP3 prison chaplain and aids in coordination of 75 volunteers who offer Buddhist services at numerous California prisons and jails. She is a graduate of Sati Center’s Buddhist Chaplaincy program and graduated from Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leadership Training Program. She is a board member of Sati Center for Buddhist Studies\, Sacramento Dharma Center\, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project and California Dept. of Corrections Volunteer Advisory Board. In 2015 she was lay-ordained as a Buddhist minister by her teacher Gil Fronsdal. \nSacramento Insight Meditation events are sustained by the generosity of instructors in offering teachings freely and on the generosity of students and members of the meditative community in the form of financial support\, service and participation in events. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde
DESCRIPTION:The Art & Science of Letting It Be\nA Daylong Retreat with Ayya Santacitta and Rev. Diane Wilde \nGrasping is not something done by the self\, but rather the self is something created by grasping. \n“What” are we letting be? What does it mean when we just let things be? Do we accept without concern the state of the world\, cruelty\, climate change\, misogyny\, racism\, etc? Perhaps we are more precise when we say “letting it be” means not adding onto the already cumbersome\, suffering self-identity that we carry around. \nToday’s daylong will address the issues that present themselves when we practice “letting it be”\, along with periods of meditation and mindful movement. \nPlease bring a vegetarian dish to share. Along with sharing with each other\, we will offer Ayya Santacitta her meal of the day. \nAYYA SANTACITTA was born in Austria and has a multifaceted background in hotel management\, ethnology and avant-garde dance theater. Her first teacher was Ajahn Buddhadasa\, who sparked her interest in Buddhist monastic life. She has practiced meditation for 30 years and trained as a nun in both the East and West since 1993\, primarily in the lineage of Ajahn Chah. Since 2002 she has also received teachings in the lineage of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Ayya Santacitta is co-founder of Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery\, where she has resided since 2009 and took Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2011. She is particularly interested in creating sanctuary close to nature\, practicing in community\, and bringing wisdom traditions to the environmental movement. \n \nDIANE WILDE has studied meditation in various traditions since 1990. With our practice of dana\, we support our Sangha. \nSummary of Important Dates\n\n05/27/2018 – Registration opens.\n08/24/2018 – Registration via this website will close at 8:00 pm.\n08/25/2018 – Attend and enjoy the wonderful retreat.\n\nRegistration Details\nRegistration is $15.00 per person due before the start of the event. SUMMARY:2018 SIM Residential Retreat
DESCRIPTION:SIM Residential Retreat with John Travis – Friday\, September 7 through Friday\, 12:00 Noon\, September 14\, 2018 \nJohn Travis\, another of SIM’s Senior Teachers who has taught many of our retreats in the past\, has graciously volunteered to teach for us again this year.  SIM is very grateful to John for his willingness to step in and lead this retreat in place of Steve Armstrong. \nFrom Effort to Ease\nThis seven-night retreat in a forest retreat grounds just outside Foresthill\, California in the Sierra Nevada foothills is suitable for both new and experienced meditators. People of all walks of life are warmly welcome. \nJohn will emphasize the simple discipline of walking and sitting.\nResting with the good heart and unruffled mind.\nSeeing that when there is great ease there is also effortless freedom. \nBuddha emphasized over and over that it takes effort to follow the path of Dharma.\nYet the ultimate result is about the nature of ease.\nWe use effort to see into the nature of a fearful and restless mind/heart.\nThen the fundamentals of insight:\n– relaxing in the deepest recesses of our psyche\n– diminishing the power of anxiousness and dis-ease.\nUltimately finding its own good heart and relaxed mind. \nJOHN TRAVIS is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation Center and a member of the Senior Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He studied in Asia for many years with many of the Buddhist masters who have influenced a generation of American meditation teachers—Thubten Yeshe\, Kalu Rinpoche\, Anagarika Munidra\, S.N. Goenka\, and Traungpula. He has also trained with and received teaching authorization from Jack Kornfield.\nJohn was a critical force in the early growth of the Sacramento meditation community through his regular presence\, guidance\, and teachings during the 1990s. His sound and thoughtful advice has been instrumental to the development of Sacramento Insight Meditation. He now teaches regularly in various meditation centers in the United States and overseas. His teachings are characterized by his kindness\, compassion\, the depth of his meditation experience\, and his ability to see deeply into the minds and hearts of those with whom he is working.    More…  \n\nRetreat Flyer (.pdf)\n\nCost\nWe’ve worked very hard to keep cost down. Registration fees are substantially lower than previous years. You can select from two different registration fee levels:     Regular: $700.00       Donor Level:  $775.00\nBoth levels cover the costs of accommodations\, meals and administration. Donor level registration reduces overall retreat costs and supports scholarship assistance for participants facing special financial demands. \nRegistration\n\nPriority Registration including $400.00 deposit for those attending Steve’s January one day retreat opens January 25 and closes February 15.\nOpen Registration including $400.00 deposit for those who did not attend Steve’s January one day retreat opens February 16. You may\, however\, register and pay the $400.00 deposit as soon as January 27. Such registrations will be accepted beginning February 16 based on date of registration order.\n\nRegistration fees do not cover any financial support for the retreat teacher. An opportunity will be provided at the end of the retreat for voluntary donations for the teacher. Upon registration\, you will receive a confirming email and a participant package of documents approximately 1 month prior to the retreat. \nTo register to the retreat\, or to include your name on the wait list\, or to pay the retreat deposit\, or to pay any remaining balance of registration fees\, simply click the orange “Register” button. \n\n \nCancellations\n\nUp to June 5\, full refund.\nAfter June 5 and up to July 15\, $400 deposit will be retained by SIM.\nAfter July 15\, no refunds will be given. A waiver of this policy will be considered in limited circumstances based on application demonstrating financial hardship.\n\nDana\nIf you’re attending the retreat and would like to offer a retreat donation by credit card\, click here. \nContact the Registrar\nFor more information or for questions\, contact the retreat registrar using the form below: \n[contact-form to=”registrar@sactoinsight.org\, website@sactoinsight.org” subject=”To REGISTRAR: Residential Retreat with J.
