SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk -Adam Stonebraker - The Wisdom of Release: Trusting the Flow of Impermanence
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with visiting presenter Adam Stonebraker\n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nThe Wisdom of Release: Trusting the Flow of Impermanence“Just as a lump of foam is empty\, void\, and without substance…” — Phena Sutta (SN 22.95)In this powerful teaching\, the Buddha invites us to see the impermanent\, insubstantial nature of all experience—not as a reason for despair\, but as a gateway to freedom. When we meet the changing flow of life with wisdom and care\, the burden of clinging begins to dissolve. This talk will explore the Phena Sutta’s radical view of the five aggregates as empty like foam\, bubbles\, mirages\, and illusions—and how this vision can guide us toward release\, peace\, and the unshakable heart. \n\n\n\nADAM STONEBRAKER\, a dedicated practitioner of Yoga and Meditation since 1999\, serves as the Guiding Teacher for Mountain Stream Meditation\, in Nevada City\, CA. Adam’s teachings are deeply rooted in his extensive training in Yoga and a long-standing devotion to Buddhadharma\, which inspire him to guide others towards realizing their unique potential in mind and body. His primary goal is to help individuals trust their innate wisdom and embrace the profound sense of interconnection that defines our existence. In 2019\, Adam completed a Master’s degree in the pioneering Mindfulness Studies Program at Lesley University in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, further enriching his understanding and teaching of mindfulness practices. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nAdam Stonebraker will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Aug 14 Adam from the dropdown list. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE – Thu Talk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 846 4947 9345 and Passcode: 111759)For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Walt Opie - The Buddha's Antidotes for Challenging Times: Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Walt Opie\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Walt Opie\, click here. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the six-week talk series The Buddha’s Antidotes for Challenging Times. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nThe Buddha’s Antidotes for Challenging Times: GratitudeIn the suttas\, the Buddha encouraged us to be grateful and thankful. Intentionally cultivating gratitude even during challenging times helps serve as an antidote to the negative bias of the mind. Otherwise\, we often focus too much of our energy on what is wrong or lacking in our lives\, rather than appreciating the many simple blessings all around us. Being grateful also counters tendencies towards greed\, envy\, jealousy and pride. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nWalt Opie will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Sep 4 Walt from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Why Is Offering Forgiveness So Difficult?
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\nWhy Is Offering Forgiveness So Difficult? What happens when we refuse to forgive? We’ve all felt it—holding on to insults or painful actions done to us\, or replaying the memory of harm caused to others. Old wounds harden into resentment\, anger drains our energy\, and self-blame keeps us stuck in the past. Buddhism offers another way: forgiveness as a path to freedom. By letting go of grudges\, daring to ask for forgiveness\, and softening toward ourselves\, we release the poisons that cloud the heart. In doing so\, we also loosen the grip of the restless ego. \n\n\n\nTonight’s talk will offer some inspirational stories of forgiveness and will invite you to explore forgiveness in your own lives. Genuine forgiveness is not a weakness or forgetting\, but is a courageous practice that restores peace\, clarity\, and compassion. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Sep 11 Diane from the dropdown list.

DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\nThis talk is part of the six-week talk series The Buddha’s Antidotes for Challenging Times. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-pesron at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nGenerosity As an Antidote and a DoorwayThe Historical Buddha considered Generosity the first and foundational parami (or essential quality of mind & heart that leads to awakening.) It’s use as an antidote\, as well as a path of practice\, can support a rich experience of daily life and the simultaneous development of gradual awakening. \n\n\n\nThis evening will place Generosity in the context of the Historical Buddha’s psychology and teachings. We’ll look closely at Generosity as an antidote to a number of problematic states of mind and habits of reactivity. \n\n\n\nThis will be the first of two related talks on Generosity. The second will be part of the two day SIM in person retreat on October 24 and 24. That second talk will explore a model of Generosity as a doorway and path moving from a sense of separation to connectedness and inter-relationship. This will include the Buddha’s advice that we should be generous in the way we think\, and by thinking\, create the world we live in \n\n\n\nThe subject matter of this evening will be appropriate for all stages of practice. You can attend in person or by ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person and encourages you to be there in person as well. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDennis Warren will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Sep 18 Dennis from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Daylong Retreat - Diane Wilde - Death As Our Teacher
DESCRIPTION:Daylong Retreat with SIM Teacher Reverend Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\nRetreat Theme\n\n\n\nDeath As Our TeacherJust as life is happening all around us\, so is death. Human beings appear to be the only species that are conscious of our mortality. Yet most people purposefully ignore this fact of our existence\, preferring to put efforts\, thoughts and practice on “more pleasant things”. We yearn to “wake up”\, to let go of our endless attachments and experience contentment and ease in our lives. Paradoxically\, facing the death of our loved ones and ourselves\, is one of the classic Buddhist teachings for accepting the truth of existence and waking up to impermanence.  It is also a teaching that can greatly reduce and perhaps even eliminate the biggest delusion of all… that everyone else will die\, except me. By avoiding the reality of our own deaths\, we deny ourselves the life-affirming lessons that acceptance of death provides… that life CAN BE lived joyfully and with gratitude. Please plan on staying all day and bring a lunch. \n\n\n\n\nThis daylong may not be suitable for those with anxiety\, trauma or those who have recently experienced the death of a loved one. \n\n\n\n\nAbout This Hybrid Retreat\n\n\n\n\nThe teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center. Participants may attend this Hybrid event via Zoom or in-person at the SDC.\n\n\n\nPre-registration is required and we recommend you pay the registration fee in advance using the registration button shown below. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Mudita: “Finding joy in the happiness and well-being of others.” Why can it often be so difficult?
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nMudita: “Finding joy in the happiness and well-being of others.” Why can it often be so difficult?Thursday October 23 is the first in a series of talks prepared for the SIM mini-retreat which takes place on October 24 and 25. The mini-retreat is entitled\, “Applying the Buddha’s Antidotes in Daily Life.”   \n\n\n\nThe first talk is on Mudita\, also known as Sympathetic Joy. Mudita can be defined as enjoying the good fortune or happiness experienced by others as well as ourselves. In today’s fast-paced\, phone-obsessed\, competitive society\, we bypass much of the joy in our lives as well as in the lives of others. Additionally due to societal polarization\, as well as the emphasis on winning—no matter what it takes—we often find ourselves engaging in mind states that are the direct opposite of mudita.  Due to jealousy\, anger\, and toxic competitiveness\, we find ourselves taking delight in the misfortune of others.  This “dark glee” is called schadenfreud and continually engaging in this mind state has severe repercussions including the exacerbation of depression and anxiety. Tonight we will learn practical methods for decreasing schadenfreud and for elevating mudita in our lives\, thus increasing our own contentment\, ease and a sense of true connection with others. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Oct 23 Diane from the dropdown list. \n\n\n\n\nDONATE – Thu Talk\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Attend Remotely\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin online meeting: https://zoom.us/join or join by phone at 1-669-900-6833( Meeting ID: 893 8282 0540 and Passcode: 121034)For tips and instructions to join the meeting\, click here to check this news blog.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Dennis Warren - Demystifying the Two Dimensions of Reality
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Dennis Warren\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nDemystifying the Two Dimensions of RealityThe Historical Buddha’s teachings invite us to explore two profound dimensions of reality. Traditionally known as the Relative and Absolute (or Conventional and Ultimate) “truths”.  They are often misunderstood as abstract philosophical concepts.Instead\, these two dimensions offer us complementary and inter-dependent ways of understanding our lived experience here on planet earth\, in this universe. They also open two distinct pathways for practice that can enrich and deepen our journey.Join us this evening as we explore together: what each dimension really means; the unique role each plays in our practice; how each relates to the other; and why weaving both experiences into our daily lives is essential for moving towards greater satisfaction\, peace\, and awakening.Whether you’re just beginning your practice or have been on the path for years\, you’ll find something helpful in this exploration. We welcome you to join us either in person or via ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person. He encourages you to be there in person too to meet with old as well as new friends\, and enjoy an evening of community and exploring the Buddha’s teachings. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDennis Warren will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Oct 30 Dennis from the dropdown list.

SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Rich Howard - Greatest Blessings
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Rich Howard\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Rich Howard\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nGreatest BlessingsIn this season of gratitude\, Rich will bring reflections on the “greatest blessings” from the Maha-Mangala Sutta (Sutta Nipata 2.4). When asked to tell the greatest blessing\, the Buddha gave a short discourse in verse containing 38 blessings. This beloved sutta reminds us that\, even in the midst of loss and grief\, our ordinary lives contain so many sources of gratitude and happiness. In balancing our awareness of suffering with the uplifting conditions in life\, we come closer to seeing things as they are. This awareness provides a balance to our daily life practice and a motivation for skillful action in the world.Rich last offered a reflection on this sutta three years ago\, as we celebrated 20 years of SIM. This evening will be structured differently\, as we will explore the Buddha’s examples in small group discussions to find sources of happiness relevant to our lives today. November 13\, 2025 \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nRich Howard will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Nov 13 Rich from the dropdown list.

\n\n\n\n\nWhat Are We Supposed to “See Clearly”One of the fundamental teachings we hear regularly is to “see things clearly as they are.” But Seeing Clearly is not an inherent quality of mind. It is a skill that matures through intentional development. Join us this evening to explore these questions:* What does it mean to “see clearly”?* What are we supposed to see clearly?* Why is seeing clearly so important?* What are the obstacles to seeing clearly? And what do we do about them?* How do we develop this skill? \n\n\n\nThe presentation and discussion will include a practical examination\, and handout\, of the critical elements of the Historical Buddha’s Psychology of Causation which explains the nature of suffering. We’ll apply Seeing Clearly to the stressful dynamics of being with family during the holidays.Whether you’re just beginning your practice\, or have been on the path for years\, you’ll find something helpful in this exploration. We welcome you to join us either in person or via ZOOM. Dennis will be presenting in person. SUMMARY:(Hybrid) Sit & Dharma Talk - Diane Wilde - Are You Listening?
DESCRIPTION:Insight Meditation and Dharma Talk with SIM Teacher Diane Wilde\n\n\n\nFor biographical details of the teacher Diane Wilde\, click here. \n\n\n\n\n* The teacher will present in-person at the Dharma Center.Hybrid events can be attended via Zoom or onsite at the Sacramento Dharma Center. \n\n\n\n\nAre You Listening?Really listening to another is an incredible skill… it’s almost magical.  When we listen to another\, we are not only giving them the gift of our whole-hearted attention\, we are also taming the ego-driven addiction of impatiently waiting for OUR turn to speak.  When the Buddha spoke about Right Speech\, he was including both sides of the communication equation; skillful means of intentional speech as well as intentional listening to others.  Intentionally listening also means listening to ourselves\, to our own innate wisdom which we often ignore. Skillful Listening is a mindful practice that changes attitudes and beliefs as well as enhances empathy and community.  It is a great gift to bring into this New Year… for ourselves\, our friends\, and to those with whom we disagree. \n\n\n\nOffer a Teacher Donation\n\n\n\nDiane Wilde will receive at least 75% of your donation. \n\n\n\nUse the following donate button and select Talk – Dec 11 Diane from the dropdown list.
