It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. \nThis evening will be what we make of it. \nThere will not be a Dharma talk. DESCRIPTION:A Special Event: State of the Sangha & Thank You \nNovember 2 will be a special evening to review the considerable accomplishments we’ve made as an organization on our one-year anniversary in the Sacramento Dharma Center. Members of the SIM Board will share their perspectives on the State of the Sangha and plans for 2018 and beyond. \nWe’ll celebrate all that we’ve achieved in moving to a new physical home\, building relationships with the other sanghas who are now our neighbors\, and rising to meet the financial challenges that accompanied our move. We are pleased to be able to present a positive year-end report and to share our plans for 2018. We’ll look forward to hearing community members share their observations about the last year as well as new ideas for improvement and change. \nAn important part of the evening will be an expression of gratitude for the indispensable help from all our volunteers during this year of transition and for all our members for being part of this community and providing essential financial support. \nWe also want to announce some significant changes in the operation of our Board. This includes several new officers as well as a new President who is scheduled to serve a full two-year term beginning in March of 2018. \nWe’ll sit\, have cake and tea\, then have presentations\, discussion and questions and answers. DESCRIPTION:Finding Balance In The New America \nThe landscape of American society and politics is in the process of significant change. Many of us find this period of transition confusing\, troubling\, destabilizing. The future seems so uncertain. What do we do? \nThis one day retreat\, with SIM’s Founding Teacher Dennis Warren\, will end 2016\, and begin 2017\, with an exploration of how we cannot just survive\, but engage and thrive in this new environment. It will take all of our dharmic skills\, as well as our creativity\, engagement and the support of our community. During this one day retreat\, we’ll rest\, practice together in silence\, share our common distress\, set a number of themes in a dharma talk\, and work with questions and answers. An important part of the day will involve examining our common dilemma and looking at how we can mobilize our resources to take care of ourselves\, our families\, our community and our country in 2017. Some claim – incorrectly – that the historical Buddha did not teach reincarnation. Others claim that you don’t need to know about these teachings or take them seriously to engage in conscious Buddhist practice. Others are just confused and want to avoid the whole topic. The second daylong is scheduled for November 19th\, hosted by SBMG. \n“How do I respond wisely to the changing conditions of my life and the world? \n“How do I find Equanimity in the middle of hoping things will be OK & fearing they won’t be OK?” \nEquanimity is the Balance of the Non-Reactive mind & heart\, grounded in Wisdom\, which supports a deep Caring and leads to an Appropriate Response. The quality of Equanimity allows us to be less reactive\, more compassionate and wise in the face of the underlying conditioned patterns of Hope & Fear. In this daylong we will identify and investigate these underlying patterns\, how they manifest in our minds/lives\, and examine what it means to have a heart open in the midst of all things. Teachings and practices will focus on developing the qualities of embodied groundedness\, spaciousness\, mindfulness\, equanimity\, and lovingkindness. \nEnjoy a day of quiet sitting and walking meditation\, which allow our minds to settle down\, and our hearts to open to an inner wisdom. In addition to insight meditation practice\, Heather will guide Equanimity Practices through sitting meditation\, somatic practices to help settle and discharge reactivity\, teachings\, simple movement practice and plenty of discussion about how to live with increasing wisdom based on the teachings. \nHeather Sundberg has taught insight meditation since 1999 and has completed the Spirit Rock/IMS Teacher Training.
